2020 Realities for Children NightLights

12/6/2020

My Big Day was proud to be asked to help pull together a new way to pull off a historic event in Old Town Fort Collins, the Realities for Children NightLights Tree Lighting.
A 23 year old tradition embraced by the community, we knew that COVID was going to make re-inventing this loved event quite a challenge.
Picture
With the help of many community partners, we were able to pull of a spectacular Live Stream of the NightLights tree lighting, with thousands of live viewers and impressive donations to this deserving charity serving Northern Colorado.

If you aren't familiar with Realities for Children, you should be.
Realities For Children provides for the unmet needs of northern Colorado children who have been abused, neglected or are at-risk. We do this by providing emergency funding, youth activities, critical distributions and collaboration resources for our Partner Youth Agencies.

Realities For Children was incorporated in 1995 and has been funding the unmet needs of Larimer County children who have been abused, neglected or are at-risk since 1996. Fun Things To Do While Social Distancing

7/23/2020

Picture
By Carrie Stadtmueller, My Big Day Lead Event Planner & Marketing Manager

Does the idea of accepting one more virtual happy hour invite with your co-workers and socially distanced friends fill you with a sense of loathing and dread? You might be suffering from the Zoom Blues!
It’s been hard to watch the hopeful Summer of 2020 turn into the Summer that Wasn’t.
People all over the world, country, and internet have been looking for ways to stay engaged and entertained -  all while socially distancing and looking towards the slow process of reopening.

We’ve pulled together an extensive list of activities for your summer at home - some just as fun and special as your traditional summer plans - check it out:

Water Day

Even though your public pool might not be open, that doesn’t mean you have to forego any water fun! Why not bust out your swimsuits and set up a sprinkler or slip-n-slide in the backyard? Cool off with some time in a refreshing kiddie pool - with a cocktail of course!
If you have a small group of friends who you feel safe socializing distantly with, invite them over for a backyard game of Water Balloon Volleyball. You can spread out across the court - although we recommend that you find a facemask that matches your bathing suit ensemble.

Picture
Make Ice Cream and Popsicles

The internet is full of tasty popsicle recipes to try out - the possibilities are endless! Try fruit filled, chocolate, or may we even suggest, cocktail popsicles?
Making homemade ice cream can be an activity that gets the entire family involved. Think of it as a science lesson or teachable moment. Don’t have an ice cream maker machine? No worries- we have found some recipes that only require a plastic ziploc bag for delicious perfection.
https://www.delish.com/cooking/recipe-ideas/recipes/a54721/ice-cream-in-a-bag-recipe/

Start a Virtual Book Club

Use the encouragement of your friends to get excited about reading again! Take turns suggesting books, pick a regular date and time, and chat up your favorite characters and chapters! Bonus - have the person who suggests the book also come up with a special cocktail, beer, or wine for the evening, too!

Plan an Online Cooking Competition with Friends

Gather your friends and organize an at-home online cook-off! Get creative - craft your contest after the popular show, Chopped - pick four random ingredients from your kitchens and pantries and start cooking over Zoom. Judge each other on presentation and creativity.
Another idea is an online cooking themed night. Perhaps pick a color and everyone has to create a dish that’s final product is in that color family. Or one special ingredient and then draw for which course you get to cook (we’re thinking shrimp…..shrimp souffle, cocktail shrimp, broiled shrimp, baked shrimp, shrimp gumbo, pan fried shrimp…..you get the picture).

Picture
Online Workouts

If you’re like us, you may have noticed that quarantine hasn’t been your waistline’s best friend. How about gathering an online bestie for some Zoom/FaceTime at home workouts? There are thousands of fitness gurus who are offering exercise routines and advice on Instagram and Pinterest. Find your favorite and start sweating! Encourage your quarantine workout partner, and check in each week to keep each other accountable!

Picture
Have a QuaranTHEME of the Day

We all loved Spirit Week and Pajama Days at school - why not capitalize on those memories and pick a QuaranTHEME of the day to help bring excitement to the same old same old? Spread the word, get everyone involved - friends, family, coworkers, neighbors! You can create themed days or weeks, themed hashtags for sharing your creativity on social media, and themed superlatives for participants!

Need some inspiration? “All Dressed UP with No Where to Go”, Favorite Sports Team, Wacky Hair, Favorite Superhero…...part of the fun is coming up with themes. Gather your friends and get creative!

These are just a few fun ideas to pass your days away. While this time of social distancing is often boring, and thinking about how long it might last can be depressing, we hope you take the time to enjoy the little things. Adjusting to this time at home and social separations involves adjusting expectations. You can still feel like you have had a fun, productive and entertaining day with the right expectations. And at the end of the day, you can rest easy knowing that you have done your part to keep yourself, your family, and your community safe.

TIPS FOR MORE FUN AT THE DRIVE-IN MOVIES!

6/6/2020

Picture
Summer is here and now, so is the Loveland Drive In Movie Theater!

This pop-up, family-friendly entertainment venue was born out of our (My Big Day’s) response to the Coronavirus. We wanted to build a safe entertainment option for families to take advantage of during our safer-at-home orders, while at the same time, support a deserving non-profit and local businesses that were impacted by all of the coronavirus closures.  The pop-up Drive In fundraiser achieves both of these goals!

We are so excited about this summer opportunity, and we know you are too. We’ve come up with a few ideas to make your family’s trip to our Drive In safe, successful, and fun!

First off – planning ahead will ensure that your family has fun. Because we are operating during a time of social distancing, pre-planning and organization MUST include thoughts of safety. Our safety guidelines are spelled out on our website here within our Code of Conduct: https://www.lovelanddrivein.com/code-of-conduct.html  Please make sure you read through this before your show.
Picture
Tips for more fun at the Drive-In Movies!

Here are a few more tips that we have compiled to help ensure that you and your family are comfortable and have as much fun as possible.

1.      Arrive early to grab the “perfect” spot.
Our team will be helping to direct traffic to their assigned spots. Arriving early will ensure that you won’t be stuck in a long line of cars, and you’ll be placed closer to the big screen. The Loveland Drive In will allow entry 45 minutes before the movie call time.
MBD Pro-Tip: Most Drive-Ins are requiring that you purchase your tickets online in advance. This is our policy, and it helps us restrict capacity to provide for safe social distance between cars.

2.      Consider bringing your own portable radio and extra batteries.
We are encouraging attendees to turn their cars off during the movie – for environmental and safety reasons. While you can broadcast your sound through your car’s radio, you can avoid the possibility of running down your car’s battery by using a portable radio that runs on batteries.
This will be an ever better alternative if you should choose to set up chairs in your pick-up bed or in front of your vehicle.

3.      Bring body essentials.
Don’t forget to pack the bug spray, sunscreen, and plenty of water. Our experience is different because we can show movies during the day. However, due to the nature of this activity – you will be out, exposed in the sun. Don’t forget to lather up with the sunscreen so you don’t leave with a nasty burn!

4.      Satisfy your hunger!
We encourage you to bring money and have your phone ready so that you can order some tasty treats from our food and beverage vendors on site. Some proceeds from food sales will also be benefiting our non-profit, Thompson Education Foundation.

You may also bring food with you. Please make sure that you follow our food/beverage guidelines if you choose to bring your own treats.

MBD Pro Tip: Check out our vendor partners listed for each showing. They will have links that you can use to order food online. Review their menus before you arrive so you can plan ahead.

5.      Wear appropriate and comfy clothes.
There will be limited shade, and you will be sitting in a parking lot for the duration of the movie. Make sure you are wearing comfortable, seasonally appropriate clothing.
Also – don’t forget, even summer evenings can get chilly in Colordao! If  you are attending the late show, you might want to pack a jacket or some blankets.

6.      Comfortable seating options.
We know some of you will watch the movies from the comfort of your car, but we also encourage you to pack camping chairs, mats, pillows, and blankets.

7.      Have a bathroom plan.
There will be bathroom facilities available on site. However, we also know that some may not be comfortable using public restrooms at this time. Planning ahead, and trying to go before you arrive can lessen your chances of having to use the public restroom during the event.
We want to assure all participants that the public facilities will be routinely cleaned throughout the day. Packing extra hand sanitizer and wipes aren’t a bad idea either.

8.      Relax and have fun!
We are so excited to bring this fun event to all Northern Colorado families! This event is designed to encourage fun and bonding for families. Relax, enjoy, and have fun at the movies!

What you should know:

Most people don't realize the severity of our childcare challenges in Colorado. You may be surprised to learn that:

  • Colorado Is a 'Child Care Desert' meaning that there is an undersupply of care for young children. *source: AmericanProgress.org
  • 2019 statistics show that 51% of all families In Colorado live in a child care desert. Larimer County is one of the counties MOST AFFECTED. *source: ChildCareDeserts.org
  • Low availability and high costs of child care keep families from the middle class in Northern Colorado *source: Coloradoan article
  • Colorado is one of the states with the HIGHEST COST of child care. *source: CNBC
  • Colorado preschool teachers in district-run schools made $30,500 on average -- nearly $22,000 less than public elementary school teachers (and significantly under the national average)  *source: The Colorado Sun
  • Nearly 9 out of 10 single mothers of color with a young child have income that is inadequate to cover basic needs *source: The Women's Foundation of Colorado

The Family Center /La Familia is making an incredible impact regarding these challenges: *source: 2018 statistics

  • Annually, our sliding fee program helps children distributing nearly $100,000 in scholarships.
  • Our childhood program serves nearly 70 children per day during the school year and over 50 per day over the summer.
  • We are expanding – adding a new preschool classroom expected to open in the Fall of 2019.
  • We are the only non-profit childcare provider in our region that offers full wrap around services from infant to adult that benefit the whole family.
  • We have helped 230 families with utility assistance totaling $70,000.
  • Our advocacy closet assists over 150 families each year with diapers and basic hygiene products.
  • We are the only non-profit In Northern Colorado the specifically serves the Latinx community.
  • Our community garden provides families with fresh vegetables. We also use this produce in our kitchen to create meals for the children in our early childhood program.
  • Our family development program has over 40 families that our advocates see on a regular monthly basis and many more for periodic resource and referral or crisis intervention.

With your support, we can grow our non-profit program, allowing parents to work/attend school, afford childcare, receive resources and assistance, and pay fair wages to our valuable staff. All we do for our Northern Colorado families is done through the focus of our core values:
Trust - Compassion - Diversity - Equity - Inclusion - Love

My Big Day was so thrilled to be asked to put on the big annual fundraiser for this non-profit!

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation Drinking Game!

11/27/2017

Back by popular demand!
Picture

When the holidays draw near, do you feel the need to reach for a beer?
The relatives are in town, and you are putting in your time with the family...

Well, spike that egg nog, Sparky, grab your favorite moose mug, and play My Big Day's "Christmas Vacation Drinking Game!"

What you will need for this game: an beer, eggnog, wine, or your drink of choice, a santa hat & a single shot of your choice (perhaps a lime jello shot topped with cat food).
My Big Day Drinking Rules:

Take One Drink Every Time...
  • Ellen calls Clark "Sparky"
  • Someone is wearing an ugly holiday sweater
  • There is singing or bells shaking
  • The swimming pool is referenced
  • Clark is wearing a sports team article of clothing

Additional Rules:
  • The entire group takes a drink whenever an advent calendar door is opened.
  • You must yell “Shitter’s Full!” any time you leave to use the restroom, otherwise you must finish your beer when you return.
  • The first person to say “Get me somebody! And get me somebody while I'm waiting!” when Frank Shirley appears on screen for the first time chooses a person to finish their drink.
  • The first person to stand up & fully complete the “knock on the door, peek in…” correctly WITH hand gestures during that scene gives two drinks.
  • At any point in the movie, you can point to someone & yell "RUSS!" If they do not respond with "Right here, dad" they must take a drink (max once per person, this could get out of control).
  • Anytime someone misquotes a line in the movie, they have to wear the Santa hat until it gets passed to the next person.
  • When the movie is over, the last person wearing the Santa hat has to shotgun a beer & finish by saying “Ahh, It’s good, It’s good. It’s good.”
Download the game & print if off to play at home!

A Christmas Story Drinking Game

12/23/2015

We've noticed that our followers really appreciate game ideas... especially drinking game ideas.
Since our "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation Drinking Game" post is so popular, we decided to add on "A Christmas Story Drinking Game" for those of you looking to add some variety to your regular holiday program viewing!

Picture

A Christmas Story Drinking Game

Rules:  Party safe, try to place with drinks that don't have super high alcohol content!  (You will be drinking a lot this game!)  To pad your stomach prior to playing, kudos to the host for providing some "Meatloaf, smeatloaf, double-beatloaf."
Drink every time:
  • The words "Red Ryder" are mentioned
  • "Christmas" is said
  • "You'll shoot your eye out" is said
  • Ralphie fantasizes
  • Santa is on screen
  • A Christmas carol is played
  • Ralpie's brother cries
  • Someone quotes the movie
  • Ralphie's mother appears to be intoxicated.
  • Anyone curses/swears with gibberish!

Finish your drink:
  • When the lamp arrives
  • When a Triple Dog Dare occurs
  • Ralphie shoots his eye out

Group Rules:
  • Everyone must yell "Oh Fuuuuudge" every time someone exits the bathroom while playing.
  • Bonus: If anyone can hold a bar of soap in their mouth for 1 minute, they can assign drinks to anyone else throughout the game!
  • Together the group must sing, "Deck the harrs with boughs of horry, fa ra ra ra ra, ra ra ra ra" at the right point in the movie.
Enjoy!
