Alternative Halloween 2020

11/1/2020

The MBD team has been extremely fortunate to have some amazing partners who have trusted us with their valued community events. Knowing that we are invested in our community and we still wanted to bring fun to local families, My Big Day worked with Thompson Education Foundation and The Centerra Marketplace to put on some amazing Halloween experiences!
Picture
Our socially safe Trick-or-Treat event hosted at The Ranch Events Complex in Loveland was a huge success! Over 30 vendor booths, over 40 volunteers, and over 3,000 guests came through on Saturday, October 31st. This event was FREE to the public.
Picture
The Halloween Hullabaloo hosted by McWhinney at the Centerra Marketplace provided 7 drive-in movies for FREE for families to enjoy! What a fantastic way to celebrate the holiday, dress up, and enjoy some old fashioned fun!
Our good friend, Jen West Photography, captured some photos of the fun over the Halloween weekend.
Thank you for supporting our small business while we support others. We love what we do!

10 COVID-Safe Ways to Make Your Child’s Birthday Special

8/4/2020

Picture
Keep it small. Obviously, large gatherings are off the table right now. But birthdays can be just as special with immediate family members. Research shows kids find these birthdays just as meaningful and memorable as a big, expensive party.

Create anticipation. Build up to the big day - present your child with seven envelopes, each containing a small privilege (15 minutes of extra screen time, 30 min. later bedtime, etc.) He can open one each day in the week leading up to his birthday.

Celebrate the night before, too. This is a great way to help your child reflect on and feel proud of another year of life, minus the distraction of presents. Take this time to give them some special attention instead of material things.

Surprise decorating. Decorate with balloons, streamers, and signs while your little one is sleeping. It will be a fun surprise and a great photo op in the morning!

Entertainment via Zoom. Parents can book a virtual professional magic show or a video chat with Elsa. Check out Send In the Clowns .

Picture
Go for a birthday cruise. Deck out your family car with decorations and special messages written on the windows and drive around town! Your child is sure to get lots of honks and happy birthdays from passerby.

Go on an outdoor scavenger hunt. Divide into teams with one adult and one or more kids each, and set out with a list of items and some phones or digital cameras. Have each team snap photos of a purple flower, someone with a stroller, a house number with the birthday child’s age.

Give them a “Yes Day.” Let the birthday child choose all the day’s meals and activities (within reason of course).

Let them create their own cake. The birthday child chooses the cake flavor, fillings or frosting, and decorations. It will be all the more special because it was their creation.

Big-kid smash cake. If you don’t mind some clean-up, put a twist on the traditional toddler smash cake and let the entire family eat cake sans utensils. Laughs guaranteed!

The Loveland Drive-In: Helping our Colorado Economy

7/14/2020

Picture

We wanted to express our sincere gratitude to each and every person who was part of our 6 week pop-up fundraiser, "The Loveland Drive In".

We have received countless compliments from the public and amazing PR around this event. This was a BIG DEAL for Northern Colorado, and we were proud to have served our community.

Some rough estimates worth sharing:

In 6 weeks, we were able to....
  • Help small businesses bring in about $55,500
  • Pay out-of-work Coloradoans about $25,600
  • Put over $10,000 back into the national economy
  • Give about 6,000 guests a SAFE way to get outdoors
  • Provide local tourism opportunity and media publicity about something TO DO in Northern Colorado
  • Showcase 64 local businesses and non-profits through advertising and sponsorship opportunities we created
  • Showcase and amazing and deserving non-profit does that so much good for Loveland families and students

Thank you for supporting the Thompson Education Foundation and the small businesses who put this fundraiser on.

And thank you for being part of our strong community!

Non-Profit Customer Testimonial - The Family Center/La Familia

7/13/2020

Picture
The past two years, My Big Day has had the opportunity to work alongside the board and administrative team at The Family Center/La Familia. From our perspective, it has been an exciting, challenging, and fruitful partnership. The Family Center-La Familia hired our team of event planners to help them with their annual Fiesta fundraiser and party last fall. They were our first non-profit client, and the foundation on which we have built our new fundraising and non-profit support arm of our event business. Through our work with The Family Center-La Famila, we have also been able to grow the marketing side of My Big Day. We offer social media and overall marketing support for the non-profit, and have been able to use this experience to expand our business with other non-profits and organizations.

We are extremely grateful that Deirdre Sullivan, the Executive Director of The Family Center-La Familia, took some time to offer feedback on our partnership, the work we’ve done together, and our goals for the future!

What was it like for The Family Center-La Familia before you hired My Big Day to help plan fundraising events and provide marketing services for the organization?

We were relying on volunteers and an overstretched Executive Director to do event planning, marketing, and donor development.  After attempts to hire full time staff, proving costly and also lacking specific skills for these duties, bringing on content experts of MBD was the best decision we could have made! Events and marketing were unorganized, lacked consistency, took a back seat to all of the other priorities of the organization and ultimately wound up costing the organization (loss of donors, missed opportunities, etc.)

What problem(s) were you trying to solve with our services?
We desperately needed content experts for event planning, marketing and donor messaging support. In addition, because this work is sporadic based on times of year, month, etc. the ability to have a contracted firm do this, rather than a full time staff member, was a win-win!

What was the obstacle that almost prevented you from purchasing our services?
Funding for the nonprofit sector is ALWAYS the issue but MBD made its portfolio of services attainable for our budget and the return on this investment has paid off beyond what we imagined.

What features sold you on buying this service/entering this partnership with My Big Day?
Content expertise of team; efficiency of services; affordability; skills that NP sector don’t have; ability to have specific, task oriented services and not be paying for a marketing staff member to sit in unnecessary staff meetings, etc. MBD’s experience elevated the quality of our events and marketing significantly.

What made you happiest about working with our company?
Success with fundraising; independence in hitting the ground running with little to NO guidance, taking a huge burden off ED and board’s plate, increasing the professionalism of the organization through marketing and communications.

What have you been able to achieve since using our services?
Increased donor support and engagement, consistent messaging, increased social media presence, increased board engagement, incredibly successful and professional fundraising events

What has exceeded your expectations since working with us?
All of the above but mostly, the independence and leadership you’ve shown.  I have never worked with a contractor who is so confident, able, and had the expertise to literally take the work off my plate and run with it...and succeed.

What is the main reason you would recommend our services to another business or non-profit group?
You (My Big Day) have expertise we lack in the sector and is hard to find in current Non-profit talent. You somehow straddle the perfect line in understanding the limitations, issues, etc. of nonprofits, how to communicate our message effectively, and you bring a professional skill set extremely needed in the nonprofit sector. You work efficiently, make the absolute best of our limited resources and need zero handholding of overstretched EDs/boards.

COVID-19 RISK ASSESSMENT FOR FAMILY ACTIVITIES

6/24/2020

With COVID-19 numbers increasing in parts of the country, many of us with kids (My Big Day and “Loveland Drive-In” employees included) are wondering what we can do to keep our families entertained outside of the house and how safe those activities really are. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has updated information about the risk level of various activities. We are pleased that drive-in shows continue to be listed as one of the safest activities for families this summer.

See our COVID-19 risk assessment for family activities list below!
Picture
High-Risk Activities
(from “Covid 19 Risk Calculator,”  ABC News, updated June 19, 2020)

  • Yoga/workout classes/gym
Why:“Lots of sweaty strangers in an enclosed environment, what could go wrong? You’ll also be tempted to wipe sweat off your face, potentially touching your eyes and mouth area, making the risk even higher.”

  • Vacation
Why: Even if you “wear a mask and gloves in the airport and on the airplane, you take the first flight of the morning to avoid crowds and take advantage of overnight cleaning on the airplane, the airport isn’t crowded, and passengers on the plane are seated with empty seats between them,” the risk is high according to the article’s doctors. “You could do everything right, but at the end of the day you’re at the mercy of your fellow passengers’ health and hygiene.” There is also a risk that, if cases suddenly increase in your area of travel, you will not be able to return home for weeks or months.

  • Visiting grandparents
Why: It doesn’t matter if case numbers are low in your area, if you avoid staying in hotels, or if you have your entire family tested before the visit, “Grandparents are always going to be a higher risk population. And remember, you can test negative one day and contract the virus the next.”

  • Graduation/Independence Day/birthday party with 20 friends and family members
Why: The highest-risk activity on this list, it doesn’t matter if your invitees have been mostly staying home or come wearing masks – no one can wear a mask while eating or drinking, and adding alcohol into the mix makes people less likely to be vigilant. And, unless you have 40 bowls on hand and the time to individually dish out chips and salsa to each of your guests, there will be shared food handling involved.
Picture
Medium-Risk Activities

  • Dinner party with 3 or fewer friends
Why: Even if everyone washes their hands and has been following social distancing advice, your attendees won’t be able to wear masks while eating. You can make this activity slightly safer by eating outside, 6 feet apart, and using disposable (biodegradable, please!) dishes and cutlery.

  • Kids’ Summer Camp
Why: Campers should be kept in groups of 10 or less with no intermixing and as much outdoor time as possible. However, during hot summer months it is usually impossible to keep children outside at all times.

Picture
Low-Risk Activities

  • Camping
Why: If you maintain social distancing, eat only food you brought from home, wear masks whenever you are around other people and use hand sanitizer regularly, camping is a low risk activity.

  • Drive-in Movies/Concerts
Why: As long as cars are parked 6 feet apart, employees wear masks when interacting with customers, and you maintain your distance from others when outside of your car, drive-in shows are one of the safest out-of-the-house activities this summer. At the Loveland Drive-In, we go the extra mile with even more precautions:
  • By staggering our cars in a checkerboard pattern, we keep vehicles 10 feet apart rather than the required 6
  • Our employees monitor bathroom lines to be sure people are maintaining their distance from each other and that there are no more than 3 people in line at a time
  • We also regularly disinfect our restrooms with an aerosol spray for airborne germs and a bleach spray for solid surfaces like faucets and toilet handles

The Loveland Drive-In abides by the CDC’s advice on their latest “Deciding to Go Out”  information page (updated June 15, 2020):

  • Choose places where there is limited sharing of items and where any items that are shared are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected between uses.  You can also choose to visit places that share, post, or announce that they have increased cleaning and disinfection to protect others from COVID-19.

  • Can you keep 6 feet of space between you and others? Will you be outdoors or indoors? Indoor spaces are more risky than outdoor spaces where it might be harder to keep people apart and there’s less ventilation. Choose outdoor activities and places where it’s easy to stay 6 feet apart, like parks and open-air facilities.

  • Use visual reminders—like signs, chair arrangements, markings on the floor, or arrows—to help remind you to keep your distance from others. (At the Loveland Drive-In, we have “X”s spray-painted on parking spaces in a checkerboard pattern to remind attendees not to park too close to others.)

  • Will I need to take public transportation to get to the activity? Public transit can put you in close contact with others. By nature, at a drive-in, you BYOV (bring your own vehicle)!

  • Before you go somewhere, call and ask what extra prevention strategies they are using, like requiring staff to wear cloth face coverings. Visit our FAQ  and Code of Conduct pages for the Loveland Drive-In to see some of the precautions we are taking to make sure your family stays safe!

There’s still time to join us for some low-risk family fun this summer!   Tickets available HERE!

Events During The Time of COVID-19

4/24/2020

Picture
Covid-19 has touched and affected everyone. It has upended our daily lives and routines. It has separated us from people we love. It has forced our places of employment to completely change their systems and procedures – some even closing for good. It has minimized some of our favorite hobbies and pastimes, and the places in which we used to seek entertainment will be forever changed.

This past month, our team has worked with a variety of clients – from large corporations, to nonprofits, to our wedding couples, and our loyal party people. We have worked hard developing Plan B’s, C’s, and in some cases Plan D’s for their previously scheduled events. From the beginning of this outbreak, My Big Day has made it their mission to support our clients – big and small – in the best ways we know possible.

It has been frustrating to see pictures of last year’s Easter Keg Hunt come across our Facebook memories, knowing that there is a possibility that we won’t get to gather for this ultra-fun event this year. We’ve raced to completely change course with two of our large non-profit’s yearly fundraisers, moving everything online. And, we’ve conversed with our summer wedding couples, trying to help them make the heart breaking decision on whether or not to cancel or postpone their planned weddings. It has not been easy or fun.

The event industry in which we work, remains one of the hardest hit by the Coronavirus outbreak. Around mid-March, everything came to a screeching halt, and a lot of uncertainty still remains – about postponed events, and the future of corporate meetings and gatherings. Events are one of the few proven vehicles for spreading the virus. Therefore, we as event planners, have had to weigh the experiences gained from the event, with the health of our clients and coworkers.

We’ve seen the articles suggesting suspending all live in person events until the summer of 2021. And while this is a disappointing prediction, we know that the health and safety of our family, friends, coworkers, and clients are of utmost importance. Many event resources have published a graphic similar to this, reflecting this scenario:
Picture
So what does this mean for you if you are planning an event, wedding, or have been looking forward to getting back to “normal”?

Well, for starters, some meetings and events won’t take place. Some will happen over this summer and into the fall. We will be analyzing each event that we are planning. We will ask these questions: what are the conditions needed for our events to happen? What type of event is it? and What will the final event look like?

In order to answer these questions, we will have to look at where we are as a country, and what stage we are in as we fight this virus. Have we flattened the curve enough? Can our event be adapted to include strict social distancing guidelines once shelter in place orders have been lifted? What kind of sanitation and disinfection can we incorporate into our planning to help minimize infection?
Picture
Picture
Some of our answers will include completely changing the logistics of an event. Corporate and Non-Profit fundraisers might have a larger online presence. Our Easter Keg Hunt – probably just called Keg Hunt, might include more outside stops and challenges. Our brides and grooms may be making changes to their guest lists, and they may be considering holding small ceremonies with plans for a larger celebratory party later down the road.

In all our events, we will be taking event insurance negotiations; social distancing – including room layouts, food service (no more buffets), event activities, and travel; sanitation and disinfection into our planning process. We may even start incorporating innovative options such as thermal scanning for the virus, and having processes in place should someone attending start showing symptoms during our event.

Bottom line is – the new normal for events after this virus peaks will remain a challenge. There are so many moving parts and standards that will have to be put into place before any of our events can happen. For starters, the size of our events will have to be minimized to know more than 50 attendees. Our venues will have to have policies, guidelines, and processes in place for social distancing and sanitizing rules.

We know that all of this is scary – for us and for our clients. We also know that some of our clients will be leery of even planning events for the foreseeable future. We won’t be going into any event blind. You can be sure that our team will do due diligence. We will become the experts so that your mind and heart can be at ease.

Someday, hopefully in the near future, we will all get to celebrate the end to this intense anxiousness. When that day comes, you can be sure that the My Big Day team will have a celebration to remember planned.

Colorado Continues to Take Action in Response to COVID-19

3/19/2020

On 3/18/2020, Governor Polis announced new executive actions to protect the health and safety of Coloradoans:
  1. The Governor signed an executive order suspending in-person learning in public and private schools across the state from March 23 to April 17.
  2. The Governor also announced that he would be extending the suspension of downhill ski area operations through April 6.
  3. In accordance with CDC guidelines, the Colorado Department of Public Health also issued a public health order prohibiting gatherings of 10 or more people.
My Big Day is strictly following this executive order and all others. We are supporting our clients who are all greatly affected by these changes to events.
