Everything You Need for a Beginners Bar

2/13/2023

At MBD Marketing & Events we are no stranger to all things events --- this includes helping out with serving, cleaning and the bar - behind the scenes! The majority of our team maintains TIPS certifications so that we can give our clients peace of mind that safety is our highest priority.

We partner with On the Rocks mobile bar, and often get called upon by venue partners when bartending help is needed.

Recently, a new venue opened in Northern Colorado --- with a beautiful new bar! (more to come there)
We were asked to help them with their shopping list - everything they need to stock a bar from the get go!
Of course, we were happy to create a detailed list. You can download it for free below!

Team Building Activities to Foster Healthy Work Relationships

9/26/2022

What is a corporate recipe for success when it comes to building healthy and successful professional (workplace) relationships? A sprinkling of a positive company culture that promotes interaction and connection between coworkers.

How do employers promote these connections? Easily through team-building activities and exercises. Team building exercises or activities are games, meetings, experiences and events that are designed to motivate group members to get to know and respect each other - often times on a different level that what they are used to in the office.

While often silly or far from “work-related”, team-building exercises are activities that are thoughtfully designed to encourage teamwork. They produce a variety of benefits, including - thoughtful communication between participants (coworkers), motivation to try new approaches to problem solving, creative thinking, and building trust.
Picture
The 5 main types of corporate team-building

Ultimately, the activities you choose to focus on depend on your goals. Some experiences are strictly designed to foster relationship building, while others focus more on developing specific skills.

There are 5 main types of team-building:
  1. Icebreakers
  2. Communication
  3. Problem-solving
  4. Creative Thinking
  5. Employee Bonding

Icebreakers
Quick games and icebreaker activities are a great way to kick-off a professional gathering. They are often used to motivate employees to participate. Some easy meeting icebreakers are:
  • The Human Knot: In this activity a group stands in a circle and grabs the hands of someone across from them. Once everyone is connected they must work together to untangle without letting go of their hands.
  • Two truths and a lie: Each group member van share two facts and one lie about themselves. The rest of the group must guess the lie.

Communication

Activities that focus on healthy and thoughtful communication patterns are a great way to develop strong communication skills in a low-risk environment.
  • Team Scavenger Hunt: Teams can be on the hunt for a predetermined list of objects or locations to find.

My Big Day Marketing & Events
has developed a variety of scavenger hunts for corporate clients – some focusing on the communication part, some focusing on fun.
  • Escape Rooms:
Escape rooms are the ultimate exercise in healthy communication! Teams must work together to solve clues and complete challenges before their time in the room runs out. Groups that focus on good listening and transparent communication usually find success!
  • Take a Cooking Class together: Divide into pairs or teams for some culinary fun! A successful and tasty dish will require open communication!
Picture

Problem Solving

Activities that focus on creative problem solving often lead to better results in the workplace. Escape Rooms could again be used to hone these skills, but here are a few other activities that will help your group find creative solutions to challenges:
  • Board Games:  Games that require bartering or trading are great for boosting problem solving and communication skills. Think Settlers of Catan and the like.
  • Water Balloon Toss: In this activity, employees are divided into pairs. These pairs must toss a water balloon back and forth, taking a step further back between each toss. Sometimes this can be done with two pairs of employees who catch and throw the balloon using a beach towel.

Creative Thinking
Encouraging creativity in play often translates to success in the board room!
  • Pictionary: Another party/board game, this one really gets the creativity flowing. Divide into teams. Ask the teams to draw a series of random objects, people, events, or phrases for their teammates to guess. The team with the most correct guesses wins.

Employee Bonding
Happy people produce good work! You can encourage relationship building outside of the office with these suggestions:
  • Group volunteering experiences: Find a cause that aligns with  your organization and gather your group together to help out.
  • Karaoke night: A great and fun out-of-office experience. Who knows - you might have a singing superstar on staff

Sustainability in Events

4/23/2022

As we turn our attention to all things Earth-friendly and sound environmental practices on this Earth Day, it is important to also consider the environment when planning events.

The events industry has a marked impact on the environment. From long-distance travel, to the mountains of paper products and brochures that large scale events create - considering sustainability as part of the planning process should be added to any good event planners’ checklist.

Sustainable events are more than a buzz word - they are the new norm in our industry. While it might seem daunting to audit our current organizing process, vendors, and venues, there are actually many benefits to making events more environmentally friendly.

Picture
What is Event Sustainability?

The definition of “event sustainability” is taking action towards preserving our natural environment; promoting a healthy, inclusive society; and supporting a thriving economy.

There are four principles for event sustainability that support the sustainable development goals that were adopted and put forth in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. These principles were developed in order to help combat the impact events have on the environment.

Principle 1: Event organizers and suppliers share responsibility for implementing and communicating sustainable practices to their stakeholders.

Event organizers set the stage - literally. They hold the power to make sustainability a priority in the planning process.

Principle 2: Basic environmental practices.

These practices can include resource conservation, waste management, carbon emissions reduction and management, supply chain management, responsible purchasing, and biodiversity preservation

In an industry that often creates tons of landfill waste during a weekend conference, it is important to consider best practices for future attendees.

Principle 3: Basic social considerations.

Universal human rights, impact on the community, fair labor practices, respect for host culture, safety, security, and health and well-being are all important considerations to think about when choosing an event location and should be part of the planning process.

88% of consumers want brands to help them be more environmentally friendly. Translation? These items are important to your event attendees, and therefore, they should be highly considered when making any event decision.

Principle 4: Sustainable events support thriving economic practices.

Thriving economic practices include collaboration and partnerships, local stakeholder participation that also includes small and medium enterprises, economic equality, transparency, and responsible governance.

Picture
How to Build a Sustainable Event

The environmental impact of an in-person event is huge. Not only does one have to consider the amount of physical waste each attendee creates, the carbon footprint of travel to and from said event is staggering.

What can an event planner or hosting company do to take responsibility and combat these negative effects?

There are many options to consider. One is to ditch a full in-person event in favor of virtual or hybrid events. Virtual events have a drastically lower environmental impact than in-person events. Virtual or hybrid events eliminate the problematic aspects of air and land travel that large scale in-person events require.

If a virtual or hybrid event is not possible, event planners and companies should look for sustainable venue options. A sustainable venue might be located in an area with reliable public transportation and nearby restaurants, lodging, and attractions. They might also utilize alternative energy resources like solar panels and lower efficiency systems of light and power.

Catering choices are also important when planning an earth-friendly and sustainable event. Purchasing food and beverage supplies locally wherever possible helps to avoid long-distance supply chain travel.

Food waste can be minimized by taking advantage of local growing seasons, and by avoiding disposable food and beverage service wares. Compostable materials for plates, cups, and cutlery should be considered when reusable supplies are not available.

One more option to consider is to go paperless. Event technology has come a long way - huge advancements were made out of necessity during the pandemic. There is no longer an absolute need for anything printed - all event information can be shared digitally and updated in real-time. Not only does this practice help to save the environment, it can save money in the event budget as well. Printing paper materials is not green nor budget-friendly.

Sustainability is a Responsibility

Event sustainability doesn’t happen overnight. It takes careful consideration and planning. Event producers must be intentional, and create and define specific event sustainability goals.

As mentioned before, this is not a fad, but a new norm in event planning. It is also something that you can use to your advantage. We live in a society that is increasingly drawn to environmentally friendly practices. Consumers and event attendees will be more likely to align themselves with companies that share their same values and ideals. Promoting your earth-friendly practices to your clients, shareholders, and attendees will only help drive your events’ success!

The Future of Events in 2021

3/18/2021

Picture
MBD Marketing & Events receives questions nearly daily about what events will look look yet this year.
We know everyone is looking for hope and we would love to give it. While we are event experts, we are not health experts or fortune tellers.

Here is what we can tell you:

We cannot predict how the current global pandemic will play out. The best we can do if follow current government guidelines and plan ahead with no less than 3 plans in place for events. (Plan A, B and C)
All of our events in the past year have included hybrid elements to allow for participation remotely for the sake of safety.

Come summer 2021, we hope that there will be more opportunity to gather traditionally. We do not anticipate that events will be back to 'normal' this summer.

We plan on delivering events with the assumption that there is a 'new normal'. This means: outdoors as much as possible, including square footage calculators as part of our planning metrics, social distancing requirements, PPE supplies, COVID waivers, fewer elements that involve touch, and hybrid elements.

We remain hopeful, but cautious.

Now is the time where our creativity and ingenuity shines. We LOVE supporting businesses, non-profits and YOU and your life events. Can we have events? YES! How? Leave the careful planning to us!

MBD Marketing & Events Partners with Realities for Children

1/26/2021

Picture
Picture
For nearly 15 years, My Big Day has been serving Northern Colorado in unique and creative ways... events, business development, media buying, marketing, website design, fundraising....

For over 25 years, Realities for Children has been supporting abused and neglected children in Northern Colorado through a wide range of services and with large event fundraisers.

In 2020, Realities reached out to My Big Day to see if we would be willing to take on their annual NightLights campaign. During such a difficult year, fundraising was not the easiest job in 2020 - but MBD Marketing & Events rose to the challenge. Not only did we reimagine the event, we far exceeded their fundraising goal!
Picture
Here we are in 2021, and MBD has committed to a long-term partnership with Realities to manage all events and event marketing campaigns. This year will certainly present us with many challenges, but we are eager to help make a difference in so many children's lives.

Carrie Stadtmueller is the event lead who will be managing all of the initiatives with Realities for Children.
"I'm excited and honored to be be the lead on this full time contract, and even more so, because of the organization we are working with!
Realities For Children is a giant among NoCo Non-Profits. I am looking forward to working on their Premier Events that raise money and shine a light on the struggles of child abuse and the possibility of child abuse prevention in our community. We are doing good work, for a good cause, and I am extremely proud to be a part of it all.
I am also thrilled to be jumping into this new adventure alongside Christine, and the MBD team. The creativity and expertise that we are collectively bringing to this contract are exciting!"

Be on the lookout for some incredible ways to support children in our community!

Alternative Halloween 2020

11/1/2020

The MBD team has been extremely fortunate to have some amazing partners who have trusted us with their valued community events. Knowing that we are invested in our community and we still wanted to bring fun to local families, My Big Day worked with Thompson Education Foundation and The Centerra Marketplace to put on some amazing Halloween experiences!
Picture
Our socially safe Trick-or-Treat event hosted at The Ranch Events Complex in Loveland was a huge success! Over 30 vendor booths, over 40 volunteers, and over 3,000 guests came through on Saturday, October 31st. This event was FREE to the public.
Picture
The Halloween Hullabaloo hosted by McWhinney at the Centerra Marketplace provided 7 drive-in movies for FREE for families to enjoy! What a fantastic way to celebrate the holiday, dress up, and enjoy some old fashioned fun!
Our good friend, Jen West Photography, captured some photos of the fun over the Halloween weekend.
Thank you for supporting our small business while we support others. We love what we do!
