The No DUI Larimer Marketing Campaign: Bringing Awareness to A Crucial Issue

1/11/2023

MBD Marketing & Events has proudly supported the No DUI Larimer initiative through marketing services for 3 years. The statistics don't lie. We have an issue in Northern Colorado and we are determined to help shed light on it and to support Partners in their efforts to encourage Larimer residents to "Make the Call."
Picture
The No DUI Larimer coalition and campaign was born out of the need to address the problem of impaired driving in our community. The goal is to prevent driving under the influence of alcohol or other substances by increasing community responsibility for safe and responsible driving.

Our campaign is encouraging the public to “Make the Call” to end impaired driving in our community. Make the Call to get a safe ride home. Make the Call about whether you should get behind the wheel, and Make the Call to report suspected impaired drivers. Driving under the influence IS an emergency–please call 911 if you see someone you suspect is driving impaired.

Areas of focus for this group include:

  • A media campaign that increases the community’s understanding of its role to prevent drunk and drugged driving
  • Changing local conditions to promote responsible and safe driving
  • Integrating DWAI/DUI messaging with promotion of local dining and drinking to be responsive to climate of businesses post COVID19
  • Collaborating with law enforcement efforts and agencies, and formalizing county-wide collaboration

Every day, almost 30 people in the United States die in drunk-driving crashes, that’s one person every 50 minutes.  In 2019 more than 8,500 people were arrested for driving under the influence in Colorado. A needs assessment completed in October 2018 found that DUI/DWAI offenses are a significant issue in Larimer County due to a number of factors on which the dedicated members of the steering committee will focus through education, outreach, and policy change.

Picture
In 2020 roughly 65% of drivers arrested for a DUI tested positive for at least one drug (including alcohol) and 25.3% for two or more drugs.

25% of Larimer County adults reported binge drinking in the past month. This is higher than the state (18%) and national (16%) average.

Ending impaired driving is a joint effort between law enforcement, government agencies, alcohol and cannabis retailers, local nonprofits, and the community. We need your help to stop impaired driving before it happens, and when it’s happening.

Common Marketing Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

1/1/2023

Picture
Running a small business is hard work! Small business owners tend to wear many hats: project manager, logistics manager, operations manager, human resources department, and often times, marketing manager. That is a lot to maintain and control!

Marketing mistakes and pitfalls often occur due to the fact that so many small business owners aren’t confident in their marketing skills and they are simply just spread too thin. Marketing mistakes won’t necessarily ruin your business, but they do sometimes cost time and money.

The My Big Day Marketing & Events team recently pulled together a list of common marketing mistakes that we have noticed clients and potential clients make. Our team has over 127 years of marketing experience - we’ve seen it all! Hopefully this list will help your small business avoid or correct potentially costly mistakes.
Outdated Website
Your website is your most valuable marketing asset. It is the key to reaching all of those searching potential customers. It is oftentimes the channel that delivers your company’s first impression to potential customers. 97% of consumers search online for products and services. A missing or outdated website can have a detrimental effect on your ability to do good business.

Creating and maintaining a website isn’t hard or even expensive. There are a variety of easy-to-use website builders that are affordable  - Wix, Weebly, Squarespace - are all user-friendly for even the most tech-fearing person.

Neglecting Data
If you don’t track the results of marketing campaigns, website traffic, or social media data, you never get a solid idea of what actually works. Not tracking goals, conversions, click-through rates, or engagement is like throwing something “against the wall” and hoping that something sticks - a sometimes costly mistake.

There is no way to learn from your mistakes when you neglect to track. There is no way to improve.

My Big Day Marketing & Events suggests building a strategy that includes campaigns with goals, milestones, defined messaging, targeted channels, and data collection. We suggest tracking website metrics, including the number of sessions, users, pageviews, top pages, traffic sources (which social media channels or ads bring your website the most visitors), visitor demographics, and conversions. When you collect this data, you’ll be able to track where to spend your time and money for campaign promotions. You’ll also learn a lot about your audience and customer base.

My Big Day Marketing & Events tracks these metrics quarterly for all of our clients. This data helps us shape and adjust our marketing messaging.
Picture
You don’t have a clear idea of who your audience is
Your audience is the people you want to purchase your service or product - those that are buying your solution to their problem. Sometimes the audience we want can blind us to the customers we actually have.

No matter how great your messaging, logo, or campaigns are - if you don’t really know your audience, your message will miss the mark.

Some small business owners try to avoid this problem by targeting the masses (remember before we mentioned throwing something against the wall in hopes that it will stick???). This is a sure way to drive up marketing costs and see very little on your ROI.

My Big Day Marketing & Events helps small businesses study and get to know their customers and target audiences. We help companies segment their customer base, allowing tailored messaging to reach the right people at the right time.
Picture
Wasting time on social media by not following the 80/20 rule
The 80/20 rule is a standard in social media marketing - 80% of social media posts should provide useful information to your audience (educating, entertaining, and offering solutions), 20% explicitly promote your business.

People do not engage on social media to watch advertisements. They scroll through their timelines and feeds to connect with others, to be entertained, to learn, and to be inspired. Your social media strategy should reflect that.

Also, when you provide helpful content for your audience, you are establishing yourself and your company as an authority on the matter. It builds trust.

My Big Day Marketing & Events will often create posts and blogs that provide links to helpful articles or videos, industry insights, inspirational quotes and images, timely articles, and uplifting stories. These are peppered in with posts that promote our clients’ businesses and events. All of this is created to draw your customers in and engage them around your mission and business.

No strategy or plan
All of the previously mentioned mistakes could be avoided with one simple solution - having a strategy and plan. Failing to plan usually leads to a high rate of failure.

Every client, event, and campaign is unique. My Big Day Marketing & Events works with each client to build a marketing strategy that works for their specific needs and goals.

Our typical marketing strategy is built around these 7 steps:
  1. Defining success and goals.
  2. Defining the audience - who are the core demographics we are targeting and how do they like to consume their information?
  3. Conducting a SWOT analysis - are there opportunities we can take advantage of?
  4. Define milestones and desired outcomes
  5. Choose marketing channels and messaging cadence
  6. Build an editorial and publishing schedule
  7. Collect, track, and analyze data - this will help with campaign adjustments and budget allotment
Picture
Failing to see marketing as a business investment
Expenses are something you buy and are often cut or curbed during tight economic times. Investments deliver future value. The entire purpose of marketing is to drive leads into future and long-time customers.

When you treat marketing as an expense, your ability to find future leads, customers, and company ambassadors is greatly diminished. Marketing should be viewed as a business investment. Marketing will help drive growth and new opportunities when your company needs it the most.

My Big Day Marketing & Events helps coach clients to avoid these common mistakes. We work to help small businesses create effective, scalable, and brand-building marketing campaigns that really work. We specialize in marketing, advertising, social media strategy & management, website design & maintenance, and event marketing. We have the time and expertise to help support small business goals and growth. If you would like help with your marketing goals and strategy, reach out for a one-on-one consultation. We will help you avoid these mistakes and find success!

MBD Marketing & Events Partners with Realities for Children

1/26/2021

Picture
Picture
For nearly 15 years, My Big Day has been serving Northern Colorado in unique and creative ways... events, business development, media buying, marketing, website design, fundraising....

For over 25 years, Realities for Children has been supporting abused and neglected children in Northern Colorado through a wide range of services and with large event fundraisers.

In 2020, Realities reached out to My Big Day to see if we would be willing to take on their annual NightLights campaign. During such a difficult year, fundraising was not the easiest job in 2020 - but MBD Marketing & Events rose to the challenge. Not only did we reimagine the event, we far exceeded their fundraising goal!
Picture
Here we are in 2021, and MBD has committed to a long-term partnership with Realities to manage all events and event marketing campaigns. This year will certainly present us with many challenges, but we are eager to help make a difference in so many children's lives.

Carrie Stadtmueller is the event lead who will be managing all of the initiatives with Realities for Children.
"I'm excited and honored to be be the lead on this full time contract, and even more so, because of the organization we are working with!
Realities For Children is a giant among NoCo Non-Profits. I am looking forward to working on their Premier Events that raise money and shine a light on the struggles of child abuse and the possibility of child abuse prevention in our community. We are doing good work, for a good cause, and I am extremely proud to be a part of it all.
I am also thrilled to be jumping into this new adventure alongside Christine, and the MBD team. The creativity and expertise that we are collectively bringing to this contract are exciting!"

Be on the lookout for some incredible ways to support children in our community!

"Play It Forward" The Family Center/La Familia's End of Year Campaign

11/25/2020

We are approaching the end of 2020, and that means it’s almost time to launch The Family Center’s annual Play it Forward year-end campaign.

My Big Day has been proud to support this amazing non-profit and help lead their fundraising efforts!

If you’re familiar with The Family Center/La Familia, you know our goal in an average year is to raise at least $50,000 for families. This year has not been an average year. The needs of our community are greater than ever. Larimer County’s childcare assistance program has now been closed for three years due to lack of funding. And, if you received our Play it Forward 2020 letter, you know the pandemic has not slowed us down - in fact, it has only increased the needs of families in our community.

Picture
Here are some of TFC’s 2020 achievements so far, by the numbers:
  • Over $68,000 in scholarships for 23 children
  • Over $37,000 in rent assistance to 62 families
  • Over $150,000 in energy outreach utility assistance to 335 households
  • 293 households have accessed the Advocacy Closet
  • 112 households are enrolled in Family Development Services
Picture
Our goal for this year’s Play it Forward event is to raise $80,000.

Here are some examples of how far your donation can go:

  • $10 provides wipes for the entire infant classroom for 1 week
  • $30 provides a much-needed, safe car seat or booster seat to a family, and safety program in English or Spanish
  • $100 supports food for breakfasts for a week for ALL of the children in our center
  • $250 provides seeds for our garden
  • $500 provides breakfast and lunch for 60 children for 1 week
  • $500 can provide hygiene products to approximately 150 families through our Advocacy Closet
  • $600 provides hearing, vision, and dental screenings to all children in our care twice per year
  • $1,000 provides care for an entire month to a preschooler in our childcare center
  • $2,500 supports our community garden for a full year
  • $5,000 provides our 7 classrooms with consumable supplies for one year (items like construction paper, markers, glue, parent engagement activities, etc.)
  • $10,000 nearly covers the cost of childcare for 1 year for a child whose working parent(s) earn less than the federal poverty level income
Picture
Did you know that your donations to TFC/La Familia also qualify for Colorado’s Child Care Contribution Tax Credit? This means that 50% of your income comes right off your taxable income. If you donate $100 to our Play it Forward campaign, your net out-of-pocket cost is just $50 - for a $200 donation after donor matching.

You can donate to Play it Forward easily online HERE.
Thank you to our vibrant community for another year of support. We couldn’t operate The Family Center/La Familia without you.

No DUI Larimer: "Make The Call"

11/5/2020

My Big Day has been privileged to be working on a DUI campaign funded by a Colorado state grant, through Partners and their incredible efforts in the area of prevention education. The initiative is called No DUI Larimer.
Picture
Our primary goal at No DUI Larimer is to reduce the number of driving-under-the-influence crashes in our county by encouraging everyone to “Make the Call” to report drunk drivers.

Did you know that it is not only acceptable to call 911 if you suspect a drunk driver, but that it is the best way to get an officer to the area quickly? Driving under the influence is an emergency.

Each day in the United States, people drive drunk more than 300,000 times, but only 2,800 are arrested. Calling to report drunk drivers increases the chances that they will be caught, making our roads safer.

Follow this easy 3-step guide to report a drunk driver:

  1. Recognize the signs. If you see any of these signs, the driver may be impaired:
  • Swerving or driving well below the speed limit
  • Erratic braking and acceleration
  • Sudden, abrupt turns
  • Driving down the center of the road; straddling lanes
  • Driving on the wrong side of the road
  • Stopping inappropriately in traffic
  • Failure to respond to traffic signals
It is important to note that not every drunk driver will show all of these signs. Even one warrants a 911 call.

  1. Gather details. The 911 operator will need as complete a description as possible of the car. Have this information ready when you make the call, if possible:
  • License plate number
  • Make, model, and color of car
  • Location of the vehicle
Be prepared to describe any of the behaviors listed in step 1 that you witnessed. You    are not required to provide your name when you report a drunk driver – in other words, you may remain anonymous.

  1. After the call. After you report a drunk driver, law enforcement will attempt to locate the vehicle. If they have a reasonable suspicion of drug or alcohol use, the officer will conduct a field sobriety test on the driver. If the motorist fails this test, they will be arrested.

It’s that easy! So, Make the Call – for yourself, for your friends, for your family, and for your fellow NoCo residents.

No DUI Larimer Campaign Urges the Public to "Make The Call"

9/21/2020

After months of planning and research, the Steering Committee for No DUI Larimer has launched their formal marketing campaign with the help of My Big Day Marketing & Events. The campaign titled, "Make the Call" urges community members of all demographics to make the call to do the right thing, in whatever scenario they find themselves in.

Make the call to 9-1-1 if you see someone swerving on the road.

Make the call for a ride share if you or a loved one has had too much to drink.

Make the call to wait longer before you drive after consuming something that will alter your decision making.

Every day, almost 30 people in the United States die in drunk-driving crashes, that’s one person every 50 minutes.  In 2019 more than 8,500 people were arrested for driving under the influence in Colorado. According to a 2020 survey put out by MADD, 1 out of 8 adults admitted to having driven after they had used cannabis. The organization said that 76% of those surveyed believe more people will begin driving while high as marijuana continues to be legalized for recreational use by states.
Based on recent reported data from Colorado liquor stores, sales are spiking at up to a 75% increase on average across the state. Some liquor stores are reporting up to a 300% increase in sales when comparing 2019 to 2020.

Ending impaired driving is a joint effort between law enforcement, government agencies, alcohol and cannabis retailers, local nonprofits, and the community. We need your help to stop impaired driving before it happens, and when it’s happening. Thank you for doing your part.
