Team Building Activities to Foster Healthy Work Relationships

9/26/2022

What is a corporate recipe for success when it comes to building healthy and successful professional (workplace) relationships? A sprinkling of a positive company culture that promotes interaction and connection between coworkers.

How do employers promote these connections? Easily through team-building activities and exercises. Team building exercises or activities are games, meetings, experiences and events that are designed to motivate group members to get to know and respect each other - often times on a different level that what they are used to in the office.

While often silly or far from “work-related”, team-building exercises are activities that are thoughtfully designed to encourage teamwork. They produce a variety of benefits, including - thoughtful communication between participants (coworkers), motivation to try new approaches to problem solving, creative thinking, and building trust.
Picture
The 5 main types of corporate team-building

Ultimately, the activities you choose to focus on depend on your goals. Some experiences are strictly designed to foster relationship building, while others focus more on developing specific skills.

There are 5 main types of team-building:
  1. Icebreakers
  2. Communication
  3. Problem-solving
  4. Creative Thinking
  5. Employee Bonding

Icebreakers
Quick games and icebreaker activities are a great way to kick-off a professional gathering. They are often used to motivate employees to participate. Some easy meeting icebreakers are:
  • The Human Knot: In this activity a group stands in a circle and grabs the hands of someone across from them. Once everyone is connected they must work together to untangle without letting go of their hands.
  • Two truths and a lie: Each group member van share two facts and one lie about themselves. The rest of the group must guess the lie.

Communication

Activities that focus on healthy and thoughtful communication patterns are a great way to develop strong communication skills in a low-risk environment.
  • Team Scavenger Hunt: Teams can be on the hunt for a predetermined list of objects or locations to find.

My Big Day Marketing & Events
has developed a variety of scavenger hunts for corporate clients – some focusing on the communication part, some focusing on fun.
  • Escape Rooms:
Escape rooms are the ultimate exercise in healthy communication! Teams must work together to solve clues and complete challenges before their time in the room runs out. Groups that focus on good listening and transparent communication usually find success!
  • Take a Cooking Class together: Divide into pairs or teams for some culinary fun! A successful and tasty dish will require open communication!
Picture

Problem Solving

Activities that focus on creative problem solving often lead to better results in the workplace. Escape Rooms could again be used to hone these skills, but here are a few other activities that will help your group find creative solutions to challenges:
  • Board Games:  Games that require bartering or trading are great for boosting problem solving and communication skills. Think Settlers of Catan and the like.
  • Water Balloon Toss: In this activity, employees are divided into pairs. These pairs must toss a water balloon back and forth, taking a step further back between each toss. Sometimes this can be done with two pairs of employees who catch and throw the balloon using a beach towel.

Creative Thinking
Encouraging creativity in play often translates to success in the board room!
  • Pictionary: Another party/board game, this one really gets the creativity flowing. Divide into teams. Ask the teams to draw a series of random objects, people, events, or phrases for their teammates to guess. The team with the most correct guesses wins.

Employee Bonding
Happy people produce good work! You can encourage relationship building outside of the office with these suggestions:
  • Group volunteering experiences: Find a cause that aligns with  your organization and gather your group together to help out.
  • Karaoke night: A great and fun out-of-office experience. Who knows - you might have a singing superstar on staff
Picture

In Case of Emergency Checklist

9/18/2022

Picture
Take it from us, your professional event planners - we never work an event without having an emergency checklist!

Even the best plans can fall short and the most experienced event planners can stymied
by unforeseen circumstances. Having an emergency checklist and the right supplies on hand can allow you to handle anything that comes your way.

Things that move but weren't supposed to:

Duct tape fixes everything, right? That's almost true! Having a variety of tape, depending on
the situation, is essential. Clear tape, gaffer tape, clothing tape, removable adhesive strips and
double sided tape are important tools for fixing things that should be immobile. Sewing kits,
safety pins, zip ties, locks and other theft-prevention measures fall into this category as well.

Things that don't move but were supposed to:
Now it's time to introduce duct tape's other half - WD40! A lubricating spray can be helpful for
loud doors, removing sticky things and more. Scissors and wire snips are essential tools as well.
An extra cake knife / serving utensils may also be helpful.

Climate control:
Is the event outside? If so, bug spray and sunscreen are a must. Anti-itch cream and
antihistamines for those bites that inevitably happen can also save the day. An ice cold
airconditioned event hall? Toe warmers under the table cloth may be needed.

Look your best:
In the case of a wedding, photo shoot or keynote speaker, appearance matters. Stain stick, oil
absorbing sheets, static guard and a lint roller are important tools to make sure that your
clients (and you!) be camera ready.

Power it up:
Extension cords, power strips, batteries, extra charging cables - we've all seen the situation
where the cord just isn't long enough. Having additional supplies to provide power will never do
you wrong. Additionally, think about what you would need if the power goes out completely -
flashlights, lighters and candles.
Picture
Mobile office:
Permanent markers, pens, highlighters, extra paper, paper clips and binder clips, rubber bands,
etc. If you're planning an event with registration or that will take payment, throw in extra money
envelopes and receipt paper as well. Extra name tags and acrylic sign holders are also life
savers.

Safety and wellness:
A couple of snacks (remember food allergies) and bottles of water are critical when there's no
time for lunch. Basic first aid supplies and pain relief will also keep you and your guests going.
Cotton swabs and tweezers have a variety of purposes, and a basic tool kit to hammer in a
wayward nail or bend a protruding wire will serve you well. Rubber gloves and trash bags can
also help contain messes safely.

Example packing list:
  • Duct tape
  • Clear tape
  • Gaffer tape - black and white
  • Double sided tape

Private Coors Family Ranch Wedding

9/11/2022

Picture
A surprise rainy September Saturday could not stop love in Morrison, CO this past Saturday! Our friends at Primary Event Rentals worked tirelessly to put together a stunning ceremony site and reception tent filled with perfect details.
As part of MBD's marketing services, we captured the magic behind the scenes for their website and promotion purposes. While the day didn't provide much sunlight, there was still love in the air.
Glass goblets, copper cups, soft white accents and warm candlelight. A giant tent that can seat 300+, huge dance floor and rustic accents fit for a ranch. Congratulations Stephanie & William!

Charitable Fundraiser for Animal Friends Alliance

9/10/2022

Picture
MBD has been a long time supporter of Animal Friends Alliance in Northern Colorado. So of course, when Pamela and Lane Everitt reached out to see if we could assist them with a private fundraiser for their favorite charity, we said YES!

"Furry Tacos" is the fun name they came up with. Angry Hippie served up delicious tacos, On the Rocks served as our mobile bar with the help of our friends at Wilbur's Total Beverage. Primary Event Rentals brought in beautiful farm tables, sitting areas and high-top tables for our guests. And what event would be complete without furry animal face painting, a photo wall and games for all?!?!

Animal Friends Alliance is in a SAVING PETS CHALLENGE right now through the end of September.

The entire MBD team could not be happier for our own Carrie Stadtmueller (now Kaufman)! Carrie and Derek said I DO at the YMCA in Estes Park at the lovely mountaintop Overlook Chapel.
All who witnessed the ceremony truly felt their love and commitment to one another. As friends and co-workers, we were honored to support Carrie in so many ways. Enjoy some of our favorite photos captured by Lisa Joy Photography and overly excited wedding guests.
