Fun Things To Do While Social Distancing

7/23/2020

Picture
By Carrie Stadtmueller, My Big Day Lead Event Planner & Marketing Manager

Does the idea of accepting one more virtual happy hour invite with your co-workers and socially distanced friends fill you with a sense of loathing and dread? You might be suffering from the Zoom Blues!
It’s been hard to watch the hopeful Summer of 2020 turn into the Summer that Wasn’t.
People all over the world, country, and internet have been looking for ways to stay engaged and entertained -  all while socially distancing and looking towards the slow process of reopening.

We’ve pulled together an extensive list of activities for your summer at home - some just as fun and special as your traditional summer plans - check it out:

Water Day

Even though your public pool might not be open, that doesn’t mean you have to forego any water fun! Why not bust out your swimsuits and set up a sprinkler or slip-n-slide in the backyard? Cool off with some time in a refreshing kiddie pool - with a cocktail of course!
If you have a small group of friends who you feel safe socializing distantly with, invite them over for a backyard game of Water Balloon Volleyball. You can spread out across the court - although we recommend that you find a facemask that matches your bathing suit ensemble.

Picture
Make Ice Cream and Popsicles

The internet is full of tasty popsicle recipes to try out - the possibilities are endless! Try fruit filled, chocolate, or may we even suggest, cocktail popsicles?
Making homemade ice cream can be an activity that gets the entire family involved. Think of it as a science lesson or teachable moment. Don’t have an ice cream maker machine? No worries- we have found some recipes that only require a plastic ziploc bag for delicious perfection.
https://www.delish.com/cooking/recipe-ideas/recipes/a54721/ice-cream-in-a-bag-recipe/

Start a Virtual Book Club

Use the encouragement of your friends to get excited about reading again! Take turns suggesting books, pick a regular date and time, and chat up your favorite characters and chapters! Bonus - have the person who suggests the book also come up with a special cocktail, beer, or wine for the evening, too!

Plan an Online Cooking Competition with Friends

Gather your friends and organize an at-home online cook-off! Get creative - craft your contest after the popular show, Chopped - pick four random ingredients from your kitchens and pantries and start cooking over Zoom. Judge each other on presentation and creativity.
Another idea is an online cooking themed night. Perhaps pick a color and everyone has to create a dish that’s final product is in that color family. Or one special ingredient and then draw for which course you get to cook (we’re thinking shrimp…..shrimp souffle, cocktail shrimp, broiled shrimp, baked shrimp, shrimp gumbo, pan fried shrimp…..you get the picture).

Online Workouts

If you’re like us, you may have noticed that quarantine hasn’t been your waistline’s best friend. How about gathering an online bestie for some Zoom/FaceTime at home workouts? There are thousands of fitness gurus who are offering exercise routines and advice on Instagram and Pinterest. Find your favorite and start sweating! Encourage your quarantine workout partner, and check in each week to keep each other accountable!

Picture
Have a QuaranTHEME of the Day

We all loved Spirit Week and Pajama Days at school - why not capitalize on those memories and pick a QuaranTHEME of the day to help bring excitement to the same old same old? Spread the word, get everyone involved - friends, family, coworkers, neighbors! You can create themed days or weeks, themed hashtags for sharing your creativity on social media, and themed superlatives for participants!

Need some inspiration? “All Dressed UP with No Where to Go”, Favorite Sports Team, Wacky Hair, Favorite Superhero…...part of the fun is coming up with themes. Gather your friends and get creative!

These are just a few fun ideas to pass your days away. While this time of social distancing is often boring, and thinking about how long it might last can be depressing, we hope you take the time to enjoy the little things. Adjusting to this time at home and social separations involves adjusting expectations. You can still feel like you have had a fun, productive and entertaining day with the right expectations. And at the end of the day, you can rest easy knowing that you have done your part to keep yourself, your family, and your community safe.

8 Things to do Immediately After You Get Engaged

7/15/2020

Congratulations, you’re engaged! Now what?

Before you dive head-first into wedding planning, here are some of My Big Day’s to-dos immediately after you get engaged.
Picture

  1. Share the news – When you’re ready, share your big news with family and friends! Start with personal phone calls to those closest to you and texts or emails for groups of distant friends and family, and save the Facebook post for after you’ve notified those deserving of a more personal message.
  2. Have your ring sized and insured – Make sure your new jewelry fits snugly so it won’t slip off; there are also companies that insure jewelry, usually for a yearly fee, in case of loss, theft, or damage.
  3. Do a photo shoot! – It can be a fun couples’ experience to have some engagement photos taken by a professional photographer. Some uses for these photos: framed on your mantle, a Facebook engagement announcement post, cards sent to friends and family telling them of your engagement, invitations for an engagement party, your wedding website, and wedding save-the-dates.
  4. Throw an engagement party – Make it a low-key dinner at home with your nearest and dearest, or go all-out and host a party at a venue (we can help with this!)

Picture
5. Discuss engagement length – Make sure you and your fiancé are on the same page about the length of your engagement and the timing of your wedding. For some people, a few months sounds just right. Others wouldn’t dream of an engagement lasting less than two years. You don’t have to pick a date yet, but make sure you and your future spouse’s priorities and timelines are in harmony.

6. Spend time together, alone – Celebrating your engagement can be great fun, but it can also be an overwhelming time that invites everyone’s opinions and advice – whether you ask for it or not. Take some time as a couple to have some fun dates and relax before throwing yourselves into wedding planning.

7. Brainstorm themes, budget, and guest list – Before you really start planning, have some casual conversations about your future wedding. Will it be an elopement, or a blowout event with 500 guests? Do you want to spend your savings on the wedding of your dreams, or would you rather have a small event and save the money for a honeymoon or down payment?

8. Hire a planner!
 – If we didn’t already help you plan your ideal engagement party, then this is where we come in. We offer packages tailored to large weddings or small weddings, full-service or day-of only, and everything in-between. Learn more about My Big Day’s wedding packages HERE.

Supporting Small Businesses: An Interview with Colorado Candy Company

7/14/2020

Picture
My Big Day is a small business, and we know first hand how challenging it is right now to be a small business owner. As such, we are interviewing other small businesses so that we can help cross-promote them among our followers and offer support in this uncertain time.

Today we are featuring John Buoniconti, the owner of Colorado Candy Company.

Picture
How long have you been in business?
This is our fifth year in business.

What inspired you to get into the candy-making business and how and why did you start The Colorado Candy Company?
When I first moved to Fort Collins back in 1996, I applied to an ad in the newspaper that simply said. Do you like candy. Seasonal positions available. So I went to the address in the add and six years into working there I found myself trying to buy the business. The purchase didn’t work out and so I went and moved on.  No matter what job I had, anytime someone asked me what my dream job was, the answer was easy, making candy.

Then, in 2015 my wife and I bought and sold a business and decided to use the proceeds of the sale to start Colorado Candy Company. We came up with all original formulas for our products and started making candy batches in our home kitchen. I still remember making our first ribbon candy sitting on a kids stool in front of the oven to keep the candy warm. Once I knew the formulas were solid and we acquired some vintage candy making equipment, I knew I was going to need some help to get this business going.

So I brought on two business partners, both long time friends of over 20 years. I actually met Brian at the original candy shop and he currently has 17 years of candy making experience. My second business partner Jade not only heads our packaging department but he is also a homegrown artist, born and raised in Fort Collins, Co. He actually made our two marble tables out of slabs from Marble, CO. He also has a piece of carved marble in the Benson Sculpture Park in Loveland, CO.

Picture
How has the recent COVID-pandemic impacted your business? Are other social, economic, environmental impacts that affect your business?
Like many other companies, our business model has been turned upside down. We were mainly a wholesaler and this time of year most Of our business revolved around tourism and events like weddings and fairs. None of which are happening any longer. Now 80% of our business is from our online store but joining the online space at the same time as some many other businesses has proven very challenging.

How do you currently market your business?
We market CCC online thru both social media and Google and with small print articles. We also use digital billboard marketing as well as product sponsorships.

Where can we - your consumers - find your products? Do you have an online shop, onsite store, or do you partner with other businesses to carry your products?
We have both an online store as well as many brick and mortar retail customers alongside the front range and in surrounding states. You can find both on our website www.coloradocandycompany.com.

Is there anything else you would like our followers and potential customers to know about The Colorado Candy Company or yourself?
For the Love of Candy is not just our tag line but it is why we started this small family business. It is why we make small artisan batches with great ingredients. Colorado Candy Company is one of just a few candy shops left in this country that still makes thin hand spun ribbon candy.

The Loveland Drive-In: Helping our Colorado Economy

7/14/2020

Picture

We wanted to express our sincere gratitude to each and every person who was part of our 6 week pop-up fundraiser, "The Loveland Drive In".

We have received countless compliments from the public and amazing PR around this event. This was a BIG DEAL for Northern Colorado, and we were proud to have served our community.

Some rough estimates worth sharing:

In 6 weeks, we were able to....
  • Help small businesses bring in about $55,500
  • Pay out-of-work Coloradoans about $25,600
  • Put over $10,000 back into the national economy
  • Give about 6,000 guests a SAFE way to get outdoors
  • Provide local tourism opportunity and media publicity about something TO DO in Northern Colorado
  • Showcase 64 local businesses and non-profits through advertising and sponsorship opportunities we created
  • Showcase and amazing and deserving non-profit does that so much good for Loveland families and students

Thank you for supporting the Thompson Education Foundation and the small businesses who put this fundraiser on.

And thank you for being part of our strong community!

Non-Profit Customer Testimonial - The Family Center/La Familia

7/13/2020

Picture
The past two years, My Big Day has had the opportunity to work alongside the board and administrative team at The Family Center/La Familia. From our perspective, it has been an exciting, challenging, and fruitful partnership. The Family Center-La Familia hired our team of event planners to help them with their annual Fiesta fundraiser and party last fall. They were our first non-profit client, and the foundation on which we have built our new fundraising and non-profit support arm of our event business. Through our work with The Family Center-La Famila, we have also been able to grow the marketing side of My Big Day. We offer social media and overall marketing support for the non-profit, and have been able to use this experience to expand our business with other non-profits and organizations.

We are extremely grateful that Deirdre Sullivan, the Executive Director of The Family Center-La Familia, took some time to offer feedback on our partnership, the work we’ve done together, and our goals for the future!

What was it like for The Family Center-La Familia before you hired My Big Day to help plan fundraising events and provide marketing services for the organization?

We were relying on volunteers and an overstretched Executive Director to do event planning, marketing, and donor development.  After attempts to hire full time staff, proving costly and also lacking specific skills for these duties, bringing on content experts of MBD was the best decision we could have made! Events and marketing were unorganized, lacked consistency, took a back seat to all of the other priorities of the organization and ultimately wound up costing the organization (loss of donors, missed opportunities, etc.)

What problem(s) were you trying to solve with our services?
We desperately needed content experts for event planning, marketing and donor messaging support. In addition, because this work is sporadic based on times of year, month, etc. the ability to have a contracted firm do this, rather than a full time staff member, was a win-win!

What was the obstacle that almost prevented you from purchasing our services?
Funding for the nonprofit sector is ALWAYS the issue but MBD made its portfolio of services attainable for our budget and the return on this investment has paid off beyond what we imagined.

What features sold you on buying this service/entering this partnership with My Big Day?
Content expertise of team; efficiency of services; affordability; skills that NP sector don’t have; ability to have specific, task oriented services and not be paying for a marketing staff member to sit in unnecessary staff meetings, etc. MBD’s experience elevated the quality of our events and marketing significantly.

What made you happiest about working with our company?
Success with fundraising; independence in hitting the ground running with little to NO guidance, taking a huge burden off ED and board’s plate, increasing the professionalism of the organization through marketing and communications.

What have you been able to achieve since using our services?
Increased donor support and engagement, consistent messaging, increased social media presence, increased board engagement, incredibly successful and professional fundraising events

What has exceeded your expectations since working with us?
All of the above but mostly, the independence and leadership you’ve shown.  I have never worked with a contractor who is so confident, able, and had the expertise to literally take the work off my plate and run with it...and succeed.

What is the main reason you would recommend our services to another business or non-profit group?
You (My Big Day) have expertise we lack in the sector and is hard to find in current Non-profit talent. You somehow straddle the perfect line in understanding the limitations, issues, etc. of nonprofits, how to communicate our message effectively, and you bring a professional skill set extremely needed in the nonprofit sector. You work efficiently, make the absolute best of our limited resources and need zero handholding of overstretched EDs/boards.

Event Consent during COVID-19 Pandemic

7/12/2020

Like every small business, we are working on being as creative as possible to still keep ourselves busy working and supporting other businesses and Big dreams our clients have... but we need to be as safe as possible for ourselves, our families, and our clients.  As such, the following policy will be posted at every event My Big Day is associate with - and must be signed by all participants.

Event Consent during COVID-19 Pandemic

Due to the global pandemic outbreak of COVID-19 and for the safety and protection of the health of our staff, clients and event attendees, we are implementing safety measures in compliance with the safety precautions published by the CDC and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

  • I confirm that I have NOT tested positive for Coronavirus in the last 14 days.
  • I confirm that I am NOT waiting for the results of a laboratory test for Coronavirus.
  • I verify that I have not been identified as a contact of someone who has tested positive for Coronavirus or been asked to self-isolate by The Colorado Department of Health or any other government agency.
  • I confirm that I do not currently have any of the following symptoms of COVID-19 identified by the CDC:
Fever of 100 degrees or higher, chills or body aches, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, flu-like symptoms, bloody or green diarrhea (we are just making sure you are reading this), runny nose, or loss of smell or taste.
  • I confirm that I am not in the high risk category for increased illness or death from COVID-19, including: diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, lung disease including moderate to severe asthma, being immune-compromised, having active malignancy.

I understand the I must wash and sanitize my hands regularly, and I must wear a mask that covers my nose and mouth when in a public place, and when in 6ft of a stranger.

I understand that for the health and safety for myself and others, I will have my temperature checked prior to participating.

I understand that the My Big Day team and all participating vendors will do everything possible to minimize the spread of COVID-19 and I will not hold them responsible should I contract COVID-19.

By signing below, I agree to the above statements and release My Big Day, it’s staff and participating vendors and businesses from any liability for the unintentional exposure of the Coronavirus.

Outdoor Entertaining Tips to Save Tons of Time

7/10/2020

Picture
Many of our favorite summertime activities have been sidelined due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but there are still multiple ways to safely entertain in the great outdoors. Planning ahead, preparing for time with your personal small social networks, and adjusting plans to fit recommended guidelines will ensure a fun and safe time for all!

Getting outside can be a great cure for the quarantine blues. With that in mind, we have come up with a list of socially safe, outdoor entertaining tips to help you enjoy this summer with your family and close friends. Use this list as a checklist in your planning, to help pull off a seamless gathering for fun. (As always, when planning, please follow all local and state Covid-19 guidelines.)

Carefully craft your guest list
Current guidelines allow for groups of up to 10 with plenty of extra space. Make sure you invite guests who have been following guidelines and are comfortable wearing a mask when not eating or drinking.
Plan to have plenty of extra masks and hand sanitizer on site for extra safety precautions.

Mobb Mountain Distillers have locally crafted hand sanitizer available for pick up on Wednesdays from 3-8PM and Saturdays 2-8PM. They also have cocktails for pick up too!
https://www.mobbmountain.com/

Picture

Choose a fun, fuss-free, pre-packaged menu

In order to prevent cross contamination between family members and guests, consider offering pre-packaged or pre-plated food options.
Many of the local restaurants are offering boxed meals for pick up or delivery. Or, if you want to get creative, craft personal charcuterie boxes for each guest.

One of our favorite local gems, The Fox & The Crow, offers scaled Charcuterie platters that can be packaged and purchased to fit your needs.
https://www.thefoxandthecrow.net/platters

Focus on Comfy Outdoor Seating

Thick, comfortable cushions on chairs and benches will encourage your guests to linger around the tables. If you don’t already have outdoor furniture with cushions, make sure that you invest in weathersafe cushions.

Cost Plus World Market has a variety of different seating and cushion styles and options to consider.

Define your outdoor space
If you want to encourage your guests to spread out throughout your backyard, you may want to consider setting up “relaxation stations”. You can define these spaced out spots by utilizing large patio umbrellas and blankets.
You can also add decorative lighting. Use your trees, bushes, and fences as backdrops for creative lighting!

Prepackaged Drinks and Cocktails

Instead of using pitchers or large drink containers, purchase large bins or coolers with cans or bottles of your favorite drinks.
You can also consider ordering premade cocktails from one of our local bars or restaurants. Many have extensive drink menus that you can order a variety of different mixed drinks.
The Coloradoan published an extensive list of local restaurants and bars that offer Drinks to Go:
https://www.coloradoan.com/story/news/2020/04/03/coronavirus-fort-collins-bars-restaurants-alcohol-to-go-covid-19/5090791002/

Borrow from your garden for your decor
Use your garden flowers for easy and cheap party decor. Fresh cut flowers in mason jars or vases are a simple and beautiful centerpiece.
You can even use small cutlets to decorate your place settings and napkins.
Why not string together some greenery and flowers for a garland?

Keep the bugs at bay
Finally, make sure that you plan to keep the bugs at bay in your backyard. You can consider purchasing a variety of citronella candles or torches. These will also help to define your entertainment area.
If you would really like to ensure no bites for your guests, you might want to consider having your yard professionally sprayed ahead of time. You can also pick up a backyard fogger at one our local hardware/home goods stores.

We hope that this list helps to inspire your planning. And if there is a certain theme you’re looking for, our Pinterest board has a ton of fun and creative ideas for you to consider!
