Place Setting Guidelines

3/28/2023

Table setting guidelines and tips may vary based on the occasion and cultural context. However, some general guidelines and tips can help you create a beautiful and functional table setting. Whether you are hosting a formal dinner party, a casual brunch, or a romantic dinner for two, a well-set table can enhance the dining experience and make your guests feel welcome. Below are some helpful tips from My Big Day.
Picture
  1. Start with a clean and well-organized table: Before you start setting the table, make sure your table is clean and free of clutter. Remove any unnecessary items, such as paperwork or decorations, and wipe down the surface with a clean cloth. If you are using a tablecloth or placemats, make sure they are clean and pressed.
  2. Choose appropriate tableware: Choose the appropriate tableware for the occasion, including dinner plates, salad plates, soup bowls, and bread plates. For formal occasions, use porcelain or bone china plates and bowls, while for more casual settings, you can use stoneware or earthenware. Make sure your tableware matches your theme or color scheme.
  3. Set the silverware: Place the silverware in the order of use from the outside in. For formal occasions, you can use a variety of utensils, including forks, knives, and spoons. For casual occasions, you can use a fork, knife, and spoon or just a fork and knife.
  4. Use appropriate glasses: Choose the appropriate glasses for the occasion, including water glasses, wine glasses, and champagne flutes. Place the water glass above the knife on the right side of the plate and wine glasses on the right side of the water glass.
  5. Napkins: Place the napkin to the left of the fork, either folded or in a napkin ring. For formal occasions, you can use cloth napkins, while for casual occasions, you can use paper napkins.
  6. Add centerpiece and decor: Add a centerpiece, such as a vase of flowers, a candle, or a decorative bowl. Make sure the centerpiece is not too tall or obstructive and does not interfere with the conversation.
  7. Consider lighting: Lighting is crucial for creating the right ambiance. Use dimmer switches or candles to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Make sure the lighting is not too bright or too dim, as it can affect the mood.
  8. Personalize the setting: Add a personal touch to the setting, such as name cards, personalized favors, or special menu cards. This can make your guests feel special and show that you put thought and effort into the occasion.
Picture
Sample Table Settings:

Informal
-Place a large dinner plate in the middle of a place mat.
-If soup is being served, a soup bowl is placed on top of the dinner plate.
-The fork is placed to the left of the plate.
-The knife and spoon are on the right.  The knife is positioned directly next to the plate with the blade facing in.  The spoon is right of the knife.
-Soup spoons can be found to the right of the beverage spoon.
-If salad is being served, include a smaller salad fork to the left of the dinner fork.
-And what’s dinner without bread? The bread plate is placed above the forks with a butter knife on top.
-Place the water glass directly above the knife.
-As for the napkin, placement is at the discretion of the host.  Under the forks or between the dinner plate and bowl are two popular choices.

Picture
Formal
A formal place setting is very similar to the informal, just with a few more add-ons.

-Begin with the informal setting.

-Include a wine glass next to the water glass above the knife.

-A dessert spoon can be added to the right of the beverage spoon, a fork can be placed to the right of the dinner fork, both placed above the plate, or simply brought out with the course.

-To dress your table up a bit, add a charger beneath the dinner plate for extra flare.

Picture
As with any event, make it your own!  These are simply guidelines and are not absolute rules.  Feel free to create your own table setting that will make your table unforgettable.
Table setting is an art that requires attention to detail and creativity. By following these guidelines and tips, you can create a beautiful and functional table setting that enhances the dining experience and makes your guests feel welcome. Remember, the table setting should reflect your personality, theme and style, so have fun and experiment with different ideas!

Charitable Fundraiser for Animal Friends Alliance

9/10/2022

Picture
MBD has been a long time supporter of Animal Friends Alliance in Northern Colorado. So of course, when Pamela and Lane Everitt reached out to see if we could assist them with a private fundraiser for their favorite charity, we said YES!

"Furry Tacos" is the fun name they came up with. Angry Hippie served up delicious tacos, On the Rocks served as our mobile bar with the help of our friends at Wilbur's Total Beverage. Primary Event Rentals brought in beautiful farm tables, sitting areas and high-top tables for our guests. And what event would be complete without furry animal face painting, a photo wall and games for all?!?!

Animal Friends Alliance is in a SAVING PETS CHALLENGE right now through the end of September.

9 Wedding Bar Trends for 2022

12/28/2021

Almost a third of brides-to-be get engaged over the holidays, which means some of you will be stocking up on wedding magazines and poring over wedding checklists in the coming weeks (or maybe you already are, while you wait for that ring – we won’t judge). Weddings are part of our business at MBD Marketing & Events --- and for our client, On the Rocks, so we like to keep up with the latest trends, including this list of nine wedding bar trends for 2022.

Did you know 2.6 million weddings are forecast to happen in the U.S. in 2022? That’s the most since almost 40 years ago, in 1984. If you’re one of these millions getting married in the new year, read on for what’s “in” in 2022.
Picture
Mobile Bars

Hey, that’s us! Mobile bars are still big for 2022, especially those that are serviced. Portable or permanent bars are traditional at wedding venues, but traditional can get a bit boring. Opt for a unique, whimsical mobile bar like our Pearl instead. You’ll stand out from the rest and get tailored service from our TIPS-certified bartenders.

Mocktails and Low-ABV Cocktails

Having guests at your wedding who don’t drink alcohol is nothing new. But more and more brides and grooms are deciding they’d rather avoid drunken family drama and other inappropriate guest behavior by offering alcohol-free mocktails or “low-alcohol by volume” cocktails.

Non-alcoholic beer has been around for decades, but alcohol-free spirits mimicking the taste of tequila, vodka, and flavored liqueurs are increasingly popular. Low-ABV cocktails still contain alcohol, but in percentages similar to those of beer and wine, rather than hard liquor.
Picture
Customization and Personalization

We love the trend of couples wanting to infuse every part of their big day with their personalities and interests, and this includes cocktails. The signature cocktail came about as a way for couples to create their own drinks, rather than follow recipes from a bar book. Consider a signature cocktail for each newlywed, or one that celebrates the couple.

Special touches like monogrammed drink stirrers or personalized napkins are another way to make a statement.

Creative Presentations

The signature cocktail movement has translated into seemingly endless cocktail presentation possibilities. Couples with a carnival theme may serve drinks in striped cups rimmed with frosting and sprinkles, movie buffs might skewer popcorn for a garnish, and dessert fanatics can serve boozy milkshakes in cookie cups or ice cream cones.

Fresh Floral Bar Decor

Fresh flowers and greenery aren’t only for bouquets and boutonnieres. Bars are becoming a decor focal point at weddings, incorporating the style of the wedding ceremony and reception. Whether your budget allows for some sprigs of greenery or elaborate bar arrangements, fresh florals make your bar an inviting focal point instead of an afterthought.

Picture
Canned Beers, Wines, and Cocktails

Canned drinks are ideal for small, intimate weddings or at venues with a strict no-glass rule. They’re also convenient, with less spilling and easier cleanup. You’ll save money on drinkware rentals and washing. Plus, there are so many canned alcoholic beverages available these days, you can find can designs to suit your wedding colors or theme.

It’s still good practice to let an experienced bartender (like our TIPS-certified ones) be in charge of canned drinks, to prevent incidents due to guests being over-served. In Colorado, for example, you could even be held liable for an over-served guest who drinks and drives after your event.

Vintage Drinks

Traditional cocktails are back in style, most notably the aptly-named Old Fashioned. Vintage touches lend elegance to modern weddings. Even the champagne tower, where champagne is poured over a tower of old-fashioned champagne coupes, is making a comeback that doubles as both refreshment and eye-catching decoration.
Picture
re-Ceremony Refreshment Bar

Another growing trend is the pre-ceremony refreshment bar, which offers guests non-alcoholic options like fruit-infused waters in summer or a hot chocolate station in the winter. It’s not a bad idea to provide some light snacks too, especially for guests who traveled a long way the day of the ceremony and to prevent fainting at a hot summer wedding.

Themed Bar and Drinks

Your bar and drinks can emulate the overall style of your wedding, or you can get creative with themed cocktails and bar decorations that mean something to you as a couple. One popular option is a travel-themed bar, with cocktails from countries or regions you’ve traveled to as a couple.

A cocktail hour bar can also be decorated to suit a theme different from your ceremony and reception style, such as a favorite hobby of the groom or the couple. Drinks themselves can be customized to suit that theme, with creative names and garnishes.

Best Christmas Wedding Inspiration

12/16/2020

Christmas isn’t just for gathering with friends and family to celebrate the season - it’s also a beautiful time to plan a winter wedding! A December/Christmas inspired wedding is the perfect opportunity to not only celebrate your love, but to also throw the best holiday party ever!

We’ve curated a list of some holiday inspired wedding tips and ideas that will surely get you and your guests into the seasonal spirit, and elevate your event beyond the typical holiday celebration!

  • Set the tone with a styled invitation suite. If you are planning on sending physical invitations to your guests, consider taking the extra step of styling an invitation suite to set the scene for your wedding. Add accents like ornaments, ribbon, glittery sparkles and perhaps greenery to your invitations. These extra touches are a great way to remind guests that you are not only gathering to celebrate your love, but the holidays with them.

When you create your invitation suite, make sure you include the following: Invitation for event, directions, response cards & envelopes, inner envelope, mailing envelope, and plenty of postage. You might also consider adding a special reception card, local highlights information, and suggestions for accommodations for out of town guests.

Picture
Ceremony & Reception Decor  Greenery and red poinsettias are natural choices for Christmas wedding decor (hello, every Hallmark Christmas movie!). You can certainly get creative with how you use these elements. Use greenery garlands to outline reception areas, set up vignettes around white-lighted Christmas trees, include layers of red and white poinsettias as a backdrop for your ceremony. The possibilities are endless.

You don’t have to settle for a red and green color palette, either. How about deep navy and silver? White twinkle lights and gold? All of these options are holiday inspired!

Bouquets & Boutonnieres

There are so many extra touches that you can add to a holiday bridal bouquet and boutonniere! Pinecones are a fun and wintry addition to any Christmas-inspired bouquet. Berries and pine sprigs are also easy festive elements to incorporate. Did you know, according to ancient folklore, the Druids regarded holly as a sacred plant and believed it had magical powers of protection? Definitely consider adding some holly to your floral arrangements for good luck!
Picture
Jingle Bells! With a holiday wedding you can capitalize on both Jingle Bells and Wedding Bells! Hand out small bells for guests to ring after the ceremony instead of birdseed or bubbles. Guests can also ring their bells when they want a kiss from the bride and groom during the reception, instead of using their silverware on china to call for this tradition.

Serve festive cocktails.  You can expand the typical bar with holiday flavors including eggnog, peppermint, and cranberry. Holiday drinks often look fancy with extra flourishes and flair - perfect for a fancy wedding reception!

Incorporate holiday inspired guest favors.  Guests will be excited to receive a memento that they will actually want to keep! Engraved holiday ornaments with your wedding date, or their names carved or written on a themed ornament will remind your guests of your special day for years to come!

You can also send your guests home with tasty treats too! Holiday cookies, gold wrapped chocolates, or even packaged homemade eggnog will surely be hits!

Picture

Hot Cocoa and Cookies - Santa’s favorite!  Why not consider offering a hot cocoa bar in addition to the spirits you serve? Perhaps include a wide offering of Christmas and Holiday cookies for dessert instead of the traditional wedding cake or cupcakes? You’re guests will enjoy making their own hot cocoa concoctions and dunking their favorite holiday cookies in them for fun!

Think Texture. There are so many different textures that you can incorporate into your clothing, decor, and venue to inspire holiday magic. Velvet dresses and accessories for brides and bridesmaids, plaids and cording for grooms and groomsmen, gold and silver accents, wood and greenery, snow and ice…...all special holiday touches.

Create a cozy atmosphere. Cozy fires, twinkle lights, candles, and scents of the season, will be an inviting touch for your guests. Create intimacy by utilizing non traditional seating arrangements for dinner - family style serving, seating in groups, long tables, couches and overstuffed chairs by fireplaces.

Outdoor Entertaining Tips to Save Tons of Time

7/10/2020

Picture
Many of our favorite summertime activities have been sidelined due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but there are still multiple ways to safely entertain in the great outdoors. Planning ahead, preparing for time with your personal small social networks, and adjusting plans to fit recommended guidelines will ensure a fun and safe time for all!

Getting outside can be a great cure for the quarantine blues. With that in mind, we have come up with a list of socially safe, outdoor entertaining tips to help you enjoy this summer with your family and close friends. Use this list as a checklist in your planning, to help pull off a seamless gathering for fun. (As always, when planning, please follow all local and state Covid-19 guidelines.)

Carefully craft your guest list
Current guidelines allow for groups of up to 10 with plenty of extra space. Make sure you invite guests who have been following guidelines and are comfortable wearing a mask when not eating or drinking.
Plan to have plenty of extra masks and hand sanitizer on site for extra safety precautions.

Mobb Mountain Distillers have locally crafted hand sanitizer available for pick up on Wednesdays from 3-8PM and Saturdays 2-8PM. They also have cocktails for pick up too!
https://www.mobbmountain.com/

Choose a fun, fuss-free, pre-packaged menu

In order to prevent cross contamination between family members and guests, consider offering pre-packaged or pre-plated food options.
Many of the local restaurants are offering boxed meals for pick up or delivery. Or, if you want to get creative, craft personal charcuterie boxes for each guest.

One of our favorite local gems, The Fox & The Crow, offers scaled Charcuterie platters that can be packaged and purchased to fit your needs.
https://www.thefoxandthecrow.net/platters

Focus on Comfy Outdoor Seating

Thick, comfortable cushions on chairs and benches will encourage your guests to linger around the tables. If you don’t already have outdoor furniture with cushions, make sure that you invest in weathersafe cushions.

Cost Plus World Market has a variety of different seating and cushion styles and options to consider.

Define your outdoor space
If you want to encourage your guests to spread out throughout your backyard, you may want to consider setting up “relaxation stations”. You can define these spaced out spots by utilizing large patio umbrellas and blankets.
You can also add decorative lighting. Use your trees, bushes, and fences as backdrops for creative lighting!

Prepackaged Drinks and Cocktails

Instead of using pitchers or large drink containers, purchase large bins or coolers with cans or bottles of your favorite drinks.
You can also consider ordering premade cocktails from one of our local bars or restaurants. Many have extensive drink menus that you can order a variety of different mixed drinks.
The Coloradoan published an extensive list of local restaurants and bars that offer Drinks to Go:
https://www.coloradoan.com/story/news/2020/04/03/coronavirus-fort-collins-bars-restaurants-alcohol-to-go-covid-19/5090791002/

Borrow from your garden for your decor
Use your garden flowers for easy and cheap party decor. Fresh cut flowers in mason jars or vases are a simple and beautiful centerpiece.
You can even use small cutlets to decorate your place settings and napkins.
Why not string together some greenery and flowers for a garland?

Keep the bugs at bay
Finally, make sure that you plan to keep the bugs at bay in your backyard. You can consider purchasing a variety of citronella candles or torches. These will also help to define your entertainment area.
If you would really like to ensure no bites for your guests, you might want to consider having your yard professionally sprayed ahead of time. You can also pick up a backyard fogger at one our local hardware/home goods stores.

We hope that this list helps to inspire your planning. And if there is a certain theme you’re looking for, our Pinterest board has a ton of fun and creative ideas for you to consider!

My Big Day NEW Event Rentals - Colorado

4/30/2015

Picture
We recognize that the little details can make a BIG DIFFERENCE!
If you aren't renting all or even some of your decorations from a rental company, you may be considering to purchase them yourself.

While this idea is popular, and feasible... it can also be more expensive than you realize. Aside from cost,  transportation and decoration set up & take-down tend to be event details that are the most overlooked.  And... what do you do afterwards with all those decorations you purchased?

With years of event experience, and numerous requests for decorating help, My Big Day has acquired numerous decoration options for parties big and small.

While we are not a full event rental company, we do like to offer affordable rental services to our clients.
Prices are listed, additional rentals are available. If you are looking for something you don't see, just ask!

Our rental list is updated with some new offerings. Take a look!

2015 Wedding Trends in Colorado

1/18/2015

We are seeing some exciting wedding trends for 2015!  My Big Day loves working with brides who have a vision and are willing to try new things. With every wedding season trends change and we can see patterns in popularity.

Here is what we are seeing for 2015:
Destination Weddings to the Colorado Mountains:
Living and having a business based in Colorado, we see 'mountain themed' weddings all the time. But in 2015 we are seeing more destination weddings to the Colorado mountains than ever!  We have brides coming from out of state and getting married in Silverthorne, Breckenridge, Estes park, Vail, Beaver Creek, Granby, and Steamboat Springs.
Why are mountain weddings so popular?
We think it's because a wedding outdoors makes for great photos, Colorado has reliable weather, and Colorado is more affordable than having your friends and family fly to Bora Bora for your destination!

Classic Making a Comeback:
Everything old is new again!  Simple elegance, white, gold accents, distinguished details...  We are seeing the word "Classic" everywhere!  Think lace... pastel pink... fine china ... crystal.... what weddings were, and are again!

Laser-Cut Wedding Invitations:
In 2015 laser cut and laser scribed invitations have definitely become popular.  We are seeing "Classic" make a comeback, and laser cut invitations are a statement piece that can convey a classic theme to your guests. With the array of designs and intricacies available, these invitations set the tone of a wedding!  They are great for Save the Dates too!
We received this laser scribed invitation from bride, Alicia:

Picture
"Frozen" Winter Weddings:
Blame it on Disney... weddings are not just for the summer (they never really have been).  But more than ever, winter weddings are gaining in popularity. And why not!?!  Snow makes the perfect background for soft, clean, sparkly elegance!

Wedding Cinematography:
Forget the words "wedding video."  Wedding movies are the new trend!  My Big Day has worked with some incredible videographers who turn weddings into short films. We LOVE this trend!
Below is a wedding film from one of our recent weddings:

Craft Beer Weddings:
Being from Colorado, and having a business in Northern Colorado, "The Napa of Beer"... we find that craft  beer has made it's way into the wedding scene - BIG TIME!
Signature cocktails will always be a fun offering for guests. But local, craft beer and spirits make your Big Day a celebration of you, and where you are from!
