10 Bridal Style Trends for 2018

1/4/2018

A guest blog by our friends, MyWedStyle.com

For brides who love fashion—and binge-watching TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress—wedding dress shopping can easily be the most exciting part of wedding planning. What’s not to love about fifty shades of white satin, tons of tulle and every kind of lace imaginable at your fingertips? This is your chance to play the fairy tale princess and pick the dress that fits you best.

Wondering what’s hot on the runways for the 2018 wedding season (and what Meghan Markle might be sporting for the royal wedding)? This year’s bridal style trends are all about accessories and showing strategic skin.

  1. Capes: In place of boleros, bridal designers have been showcasing breathtakingly beautiful capes and capelets. This royal-inspired trend can simply brush the shoulders or sweep dramatically to the floor (Think: Sheer tulle and lace or superhero-like solids).
  2. Gloves: Short to elbow-length gloves have once again become an elegant addition to bridal gowns. Sheer or lacy gloves can be used for a subtle touch, while satin can be used to make a bold statement.
  3. Off-the-shoulder dresses: Much like the popular off-the-shoulder clothing trend this past summer and fall, wedding dresses are now sporting many lacey off-the-shoulder and cold-shoulder looks.
  4. Separate sleeves: Sleeves worn separately from the gown (or slightly attached) are big this year from many bridal designers (some have called this the “arm warmers” trend).
  5. Puffed sleeves: Believe it or not, this 80s trend has made a 2018 comeback. Puffed sleeves made of white satin or see-through tulle can add a different silhouette to the arm.

Picture
6. Bountiful bows: You’ll see many dresses with statement bows in new (and surprising) places for the 2018 wedding season. This includes giant back bows and dainty shoulder bow accents.

7. Pale blue gowns: Now you can really channel Cinderella! This year’s dresses have layers of slightly-tinted blue tulle or blue shimmering accents for an icy bridal effect.

8. Saloon-inspired dresses: Runways for the 2018 wedding season saw many different details and accessories reminiscent of an 1800s-saloon look, including high necks, lacy neck collars, delicate fringe and side ruching.

9. Drapey dresses: One 2018 trend is gowns with extra, flowy fabric that trails behind (that is often removable). Because this acts the same as a cathedral-length veil, this train can serve double duty in lieu of a longer veil.

10. Short dresses and bridal pantsuits: The 2018 wedding season holds many different options for the unconventional or non-traditional bride. Look for hi-low, tea length, or minidress options and swoon-worthy bridal pants or pantsuits.

4 Tips to Help Choose a Wedding Theme

11/30/2017

Picture
Selecting the theme of your wedding can be one of the more difficult details to decide upon. It’s likely you as a couple fit characteristics of more than one theme. Maybe you’re a little sultry but also have a sophisticated elegance about you? Your personalities might take you in one direction but your budget may take you in another. So where do you start? Which direction do you go in? Below are four tips to help you better choose the wedding theme that best suits who you are as a couple.

Personality

First thing’s first: what type of couple are you? Maybe you consider yourself to be outdoorsy and find yourselves camping and hiking on the weekends. If so, a rustic wedding might encompass your personalities! Do you love bright, bold colors and eccentric design? Then maybe a whimsical setting is just for you! Whichever it may be, go with a theme that will let your personalities shine and it will be sure to be a magical momentous event!

Personal Style

Your personal style can have a lot of say in the theme you choose as well. If you tend to go more of a classy route, than a traditional elegant tuxedo and ballroom gown would be the right choice for you. Or maybe it’s the look of suspenders with a bow tie paired with a lace fitted dress for that fits your fancy?

Regardless of the look you choose, it is important to make sure you feel and look your best on your special day. If you’re not sure where to look first, ladies, we suggest you visit Azazie for inspiration. They have an abundance of styles and colors that will be sure to fit any theme you so desire! As for the gents, we recommend The Black Tux for your style inspiration. Their many styles of wedding suits and tuxedos will be sure to impress. They also have this helpful style guide that gives pointers for guys who, let’s face it, can use the help.

Season

The season plays a huge role on your wedding theme. For example, you wouldn’t want to have a rustic barn wedding in the winter, am I right? Some people know immediately the season they want to get married in, but it doesn’t always work out as planned. Does the groom hate the heat but the bride dream of walking down the aisle in the summer sun? If this is the case, you might need to compromise with a beautiful spring wedding to get the best of both worlds.

Wedding Venue

Choosing your venue is one of the first things you have to decide on when planning a wedding. But your theme also plays a role in location as well. First, agree on what time of year you’d like to get married. From there you can decide if an outdoor or indoor wedding would be most appropriate. Are you one to want to say “I do” in a botanical garden overlooking a pond or is it more your style to do the hustle in a grand hotel ballroom? Whichever you may decide on, make sure it is conducive to your guests.

Well there you have it folks, we hope these tips will guide you in the right direction when it comes to choosing the best wedding theme for you and your mate. But if you’d like even more inspiration, take a look at the ideas below. They will be sure to get more ideas brewing.

Which wedding theme is your favorite and do you see yourself at any?

What is Your Bridal Personality?

11/27/2017

What kind of personality do you have? When planning your big day, your personality will play a big part in everything, from the dress to the hors d'oeuvres to the band at the reception. It is your big day, and everything about it is all about you!

So what is your personality as a bride? What aspects of yourself do you want to show at your wedding? Are you sporty or a dreamer? Are you all about the latest clothing styles or the latest gardening styles? Choosing your bridal personality is about narrowing it down to what you want to show about yourself in your wedding.
Picture
Sometimes we need help narrowing it down. After all, there is so much to our personalities that it’s hard to know where to begin! Hopefully these suggestions can provide inspiration to find your bridal personality!
Hobbies and Interests
Our hobbies and interests can tell us a lot about our personalities. Sports, gaming, or business pursuits hint at ambition and a competitive nature. A gardener or artist has to have the quality of patience to succeed. Healthcare or volunteer workers have a compassionate quality that motivates them to do for others, and fashionistas spend a lot of money and time making themselves beautiful, like living works of art. Your hobbies and interests are more than just things you like to do. They actually say a lot about your personality!

Horoscopes and Totems
Many people believe that one’s personality is determined by the date of their birth. Chinese, Celtic, and Western astrologers all have their own systems. Other cultures associate personalities with animal totems or phases of the Moon. Astrologers will tell you to explore what “feels” right, and what that means is to select the system you most identify with and see what it has to say about your personality. It might be a fun thing to do with your bridesmaids, or it might teach you something significant about yourself!

Ancestry Research
Maybe your heritage is a big part of who you are. Maybe you celebrate your ethnic cooking or cultural trades. Maybe you don’t know anything about your background and want to find out before the wedding. Doing some ancestry research can be a huge way to infuse your personality into your wedding and the planning of it. Talking to family members (your elder family can be invaluable here!) or researching online can give you a lot of insights into your heritage, which can in turn be of great influence on your wedding and reception!
Picture
Personality Tests
Psychology is a young discipline, barely over a century old, but it has come a long way since the first studies of human behavior took place. There are many personality tests out there that classify you based on your answers to questions posed about your attitudes and goals, likes, dislikes, and beliefs. By examining a variety of parameters, these tests might give you some clues about your personality that you didn’t notice about yourself before. They might also highlight the benefits of a feature you’ve noticed but never took pride in. Taking a deep look at yourself might just be what it takes to find your bridal personality!

There are lots of ways to find out the things about yourself that you want to showcase when your big day comes. Getting married is all about celebrating the love of the bride and groom, and both your personality signatures will be all over the event. So remember that finding your bridal personality begins and ends with you!

2015 Wedding Trends in Colorado

1/18/2015

We are seeing some exciting wedding trends for 2015!  My Big Day loves working with brides who have a vision and are willing to try new things. With every wedding season trends change and we can see patterns in popularity.

Here is what we are seeing for 2015:
Destination Weddings to the Colorado Mountains:
Living and having a business based in Colorado, we see 'mountain themed' weddings all the time. But in 2015 we are seeing more destination weddings to the Colorado mountains than ever!  We have brides coming from out of state and getting married in Silverthorne, Breckenridge, Estes park, Vail, Beaver Creek, Granby, and Steamboat Springs.
Why are mountain weddings so popular?
We think it's because a wedding outdoors makes for great photos, Colorado has reliable weather, and Colorado is more affordable than having your friends and family fly to Bora Bora for your destination!

Classic Making a Comeback:
Everything old is new again!  Simple elegance, white, gold accents, distinguished details...  We are seeing the word "Classic" everywhere!  Think lace... pastel pink... fine china ... crystal.... what weddings were, and are again!

Laser-Cut Wedding Invitations:
In 2015 laser cut and laser scribed invitations have definitely become popular.  We are seeing "Classic" make a comeback, and laser cut invitations are a statement piece that can convey a classic theme to your guests. With the array of designs and intricacies available, these invitations set the tone of a wedding!  They are great for Save the Dates too!
We received this laser scribed invitation from bride, Alicia:

"Frozen" Winter Weddings:
Blame it on Disney... weddings are not just for the summer (they never really have been).  But more than ever, winter weddings are gaining in popularity. And why not!?!  Snow makes the perfect background for soft, clean, sparkly elegance!

Wedding Cinematography:
Forget the words "wedding video."  Wedding movies are the new trend!  My Big Day has worked with some incredible videographers who turn weddings into short films. We LOVE this trend!
Below is a wedding film from one of our recent weddings:

Craft Beer Weddings:
Being from Colorado, and having a business in Northern Colorado, "The Napa of Beer"... we find that craft  beer has made it's way into the wedding scene - BIG TIME!
Signature cocktails will always be a fun offering for guests. But local, craft beer and spirits make your Big Day a celebration of you, and where you are from!

What To Wear To A Winter Wedding

1/6/2015

-by Jessica Weimer

When dressing to go to a wedding you should always check the invitation first, this will tell you the style and theme of the wedding and usually states what dress is required. After you determine this it’s really up to you and your wardrobe to decide what to wear. In the winter months weddings can be harder to dress for because of the cold weather. Depending on the dress code this is some of My Big Day’s winter wedding outfit inspiration!

Picture
Black Tie- This is classified as a chic cocktail dress or long evening gown for women and a tuxedo for men. We love this blue dress with tights for added warmth and the colors are really pretty in winter. Men can’t go wrong with a black and white tuxedo.

Picture
Picture
Dressy Casual- For women this requires a dressy top and skirt or a cocktail dress, and for men it’s a suit and tie. This playful outfit is great for winter with the silver tones but also dressy enough with the sparkle and accessories to fit in perfectly. For men this is a good opportunity to add a little color and personality to your suit selection, because you are able to not be so formal but still need a suit

Picture
Picture
Casual- This is nice pants and a blouse for women and dress pants with a button down or polo for men. For women this is a perfect casual outfit, it is easily worn with nice pants as well. For men we like the idea of dressing up a pair of jeans or having slacks and a nice button up.

Picture
It’s always good to remember that no matter what weddings require a hint of formality and you should never show up in jeans and a hoodie. It is respectful to put on your nicer clothes and look presentable. Even in winter you can get creative and look your best!

Beauty Trends for Brides

10/28/2014

-by Jessica Weimer

When thinking about your wedding day, most brides picture it to be the day they are most beautiful. Your hair and makeup needs to be perfect and everything you’ve ever dreamed of. Now-a-days there are so many different options to choose from that it can seem like an endless possibility of choices! Here is some examples of My Big Day’s favorite wedding day looks!

Picture
Picture
CLASSIC
We love this look because it is perfect for the girl who doesn’t want a lot of eye makeup but also wants to make a statement. Red lips are beautiful on brides! The key to this look is the winged eyeliner and soft grey or brown shadowing on the eye. This is a great look for a bride wanting a vintage flair, as it is reminiscent of the 20’s.

SMOKEY EYE
This look is definitely more of a sultry look and really emphasizes the eyes. This look is ideal with a nude or simpler lip, you don’t want too much going on with such a dark eye it would be overwhelming. This makeup is perfect if you are looking to be a glam bride!

The NO MAKE-UP LOOK
If you are the bride who wants something all natural and doesn’t want to fuss with too much on your face, these looks could be perfect for you. We recommend at least a touch of foundation to make your skin look flawless in pictures and maybe a little blush to bring some color in. A little eye pencil around your eyes will make your eyes pop without looking overdone as well as a little mascara. We picture this on the boho bride or the mountain bride.

UNIQUE BRIDAL LOOKS
If none of these ideas work for you, then maybe you’re the bride who wants to try something a little different and unusual on her wedding day. You should try an eye shadow color that isn’t super trendy or a lip color that is really dark and stands out. Or if you are going with a theme you can do your makeup to match!  Be Uniquely You!
