5 Fun Fall- Inspired Cocktails

10/17/2021

Northern Colorado’s weather is cooling off, and that has us in the mood for fall-inspired cocktails ideal for a wintry wedding or a fun Friendsgiving. We wrote a blog for our friends at  On the Rocks and wanted to share it here as well!

Try the recipes below from two of our favorite regional partners – master alcohol deliverers Wilbur’s Total Beverage and vodka connoisseurs Spring44 Distilling.
Picture
Mulled Wine from Wilbur’s Total Beverage

Fun fact: This cold-weather classic drink dates back to the Roman Empire.

  • One (750 ml) bottle of dry red wine
  •  One orange, sliced into rounds (extra for garnish)
  •  8 whole cloves
  •  3 cinnamon sticks (extra for garnish)
  •  4 star anise (extra for garnish)
  •  2-4 tablespoons honey (optional)
  • Optional add-ins: ¼ cup brandy, cognac, bourbon, or whiskey; cranberries, apple slices, vanilla

1. Combine ingredients. Add wine, orange slices, cloves, cinnamon, star anise, honey, and any add-ins to a large saucepan or slow cooker. Stir to combine.

2. Stovetop: Cook the mulled wine on medium-high heat until it just barely reaches a simmer (do not boil – you do not want to cook off the alcohol). Reduce heat to low, cover, and let the wine simmer for at least 15 minutes or up to 3 hours.

Slow cooker: Heat on low for about an hour until hot, and then reduce heat to warm until ready to serve.

3. Using a fine mesh strainer, remove and discard the used orange slices and spices. Give the mulled wine a taste, and stir in extra sweetener if needed.

4. Serve warm in heatproof mugs, garnish with orange rounds, cinnamon sticks, and star anise.

Picture
Spring 44’s Spiced Pear Martini

A rich cocktail for a formal fall get-together, with pear, almond, and cardamom.

To make, combine:

  • 1 ½ oz. Spring44 vodka (infused with pears)
  • Splash amaretto liqueur
  •  ½ oz. honey or simple syrup
  • ½ oz. lemon juice
  •  3 dashes cardamom bitters

Picture
Grand Old Fashioned by Wilbur’s Total Beverage

This version of the traditional, elegant drink incorporates subtle flavors like orange oil to balance bitter and sweet flavors.

  • 1 oz. Grand Marnier Cordon Rouge
  • 1 oz. Wild Turkey 101 Bourbon Whiskey
  • 3 dashes aromatic bitters
  • Large ice cube
  • Orange twist to garnish

Combine aromatic bitters, Grand Marnier, and whiskey in an old fashioned glass. Add large ice cube and stir until cold and well incorporated. Garnish with orange twist, expressing oils over glass rim.

Picture
Boozy Chai from Spring44 Distilling

The warm spices of chai evoke the coziness of fall: cardamom, clove, ginger, and black pepper. Booze it up with some Spring44 Vodka, add a splash of cream and you've created a sipping dessert.

To make, combine:

  • 1 oz. Spring44 vodka
  • 4 oz. strong chai tea
  • Sweetener, to taste
  • 1-2 oz. cream
Picture
Apple Bees Knees Cocktail

A seasonal twist on a classic gin cocktail.

For the honey syrup:

  • ½ c. water
  • ½ c. honey
  • 3 sprigs rosemary

For the cocktail:

  • ¼ c. gin
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons apple juice
  • 2 tablespoons honey syrup
  • Rosemary and/or apple slices to garnish

1. To make syrup, place water, honey, and rosemary in a small saucepan and bring to a boil. Remove from heat and let steep for 10 minutes. Cool to room temperature before using. Remaining syrup can be stored in the refrigerator for up to one week.

2. In a cocktail shaker filled with ice add in, lemon juice, apple juice, and honey syrup. Shake to combine and strain into a glass. Garnish with rosemary and apple slices.

Shop local and celebrate the season at your next event or date night in with these warm, nostalgic signature cocktails. For more cocktail recipes, check out our list of eight local-inspired signature cocktails for all seasons.

Let us help you brainstorm signature cocktails for your next event when you partner with MY BIG DAY or book with On the Rocks.

Staying Safe This Fall, While Still Having Fun!

9/14/2021

The MBD Marketing & Events team supports a number of non-profits across the front range who serve families and children. Knowing that Halloween is just around the corner, and COVID is still here at full strength, we are getting tons of questions around event safety.

While we are event experts, we are not the CDC. We follow our county, state and government recommendations closely so that we can help our clients make educated decisions.

If you are wondering what you can do to safely enjoy Fall Festivities, this blog is for you!
Picture
Summer is almost over and with the Fall season right around the corner it is not too soon to start thinking about Halloween. In 2020 our entire world was rocked by the pandemic with most of our favorite events and activities canceled or closed. So for 2021 we are wondering, will we be able to check everything off our Autumn Bucket List in a way that is safe?

1. Outdoor Gatherings are the Safest
We have all been told that being outdoors is the best way to be in larger groups of people. If we can keep our distance and we are outside, we do not even need to wear masks! According to an article from USA Today, experts said “that activities such as visiting a pumpkin patch, going apple picking and other outdoor events generally pose a lower risk for you and your family.”[1]
Thank goodness for the AMAZING Fall weather we have in Colorado! Tons of outdoor time is possible here.

2.  Halloween Themed Masks are Fun and Safe!

Wearing a mask on or around Halloween has been a popular thing to do long before COVID entered our lives. Luckily now your fun or spooky Halloween mask. Can also help protect you and others at Halloween events and parties! Prevention.com informs us that, “Halloween costumes actually originated from the ancient Celtic tradition of dressing up to ward off wandering spirits on October 31—so this might be the only year when doctors and druids alike agree that your costume is necessary to keep you safe.”[2]

3. Vaccinations
We' are all aware of the available vaccine. And soon it could be available for children. According to a Forbes article “Vaccines for children ages 5 to 11 could potentially come as soon as October under a “best case scenario,” Dr. Scott Gottlieb, the former Food and Drug Administration (FDA) chief who serves on Pfizer’s board.”[3]

4. Find Alternative Ways to Stay Festive

From Halloween movie marathons to decorating the house as spooky as you’d like, you can get creative with how you celebrate Fall and Halloween festivities. A fun way to celebrate with your neighbors and friends from a distance is “Boo-ing” them! Click here on more information on how to “BOO!” https://indywithkids.com/how-to-boo/[4]

5. Attend Noco’s Drive Thru Trick-or-Treat

A socially distanced Halloween for families, with something for everyone. Picture a reverse parade! Kids can trick-or-treat safely from their car window. Families will slowly drive through a long series of Halloween scenes decorated by local businesses, schools and nonprofits. COVID safety measures will be in place. Last year this event sold out in just 5 minutes, so we recommend you follow the TEF FB event page to learn about ticket sale date/time.

In search of the Great Pumpkin - Fall Fun in Northern Colorado

10/8/2020

It’s the perfect weekend to plan a trip to one of the many awesome NoCo farms and pumpkin patches in search of the great pumpkin!

Here’s a list of some of the most festive spots we have found:

1. The Bartels Farm, Fort Collins. Famous for their beautiful pumpkin patch, this is one of the most popular spots on our list. With plenty of activities and attractions, there will be something for everyone in the family to enjoy! Be prepared for large crowds (they have plenty of parking - we're talking an overflow parking lot with hundreds of vehicles) - so make sure to pack your mask for safety purposes! (Their website is under construction)
Picture
2. Osborn Farm, Loveland - This local favorite has lots of room to spread out, a great selection of pumpkins, and a friendly staff. There is a pond with fish, sheep and a new calf, honey from the farm, and great photo ops. Unfortunately, the corn maze and tractor rides are closed this year due to Covid. http://osborn.farm

3.  Anderson Farms, Erie - A favorite of many, Anderson Farms is big and has a lot of fun and entertaining attractions. Activities open during covid include the train, slides, corn maze, kids maze, tire "mountain," wagon ride, go-karts, playground, and petting zoo. Their website provides a  list Covid-19 precautions so you can feel safe attending with little ones. https://andersonfarms.com

4. Tigges Farm Produce and Pumpkin Patch- Activities and procedures are a bit different this year, due to Covid regulations, but you can still visit to browse for the perfect pumpkin, tasty Colorado grown chiles, and the gift shop has a variety of jellies, jams, gifts, carving kits & more! https://www.tiggesfarm.com/

5.  Fritzler Farm Park - Fritzler Farm will be open for select days through October. Popular with many families, as well as school and youth groups, reservations for your visit are encouraged. They offer a variety of corn mazes, games, a barrel train, pumpkin cannons, paintball galleries, and a Beer Garden for adults!  https://www.fritzlerfarmpark.com/fall-days

If you’re looking for more Halloween and Fall-inspired activities beyond the pumpkin patch, My Big Day partner and friend, Macaroni Kid,  has an extensive list of events and spots you should definitely check out! This extensive list of Pumpkin Patches, Fall Festivals, Corn Mazes & Haunted Spots covers all of Northern Colorado, including Fort Collins, Loveland, Greeley, Erie, and more!
