5 Helpful Tips to Remote Learning

12/26/2020

* A blog dedicated to our non-profit client, Thompson Education Foundation
COVID-19 has forced schools to do what’s being referred to “remote” or “distance” learning this year, and some say it could continue into 2021 as well. This has been a difficult process for parents, students and teachers to adjust to. Just know, you are not alone! Many parents and teachers have been experimenting with what works best for their students during this time. I have gathered the top 5 most helpful tips on how to be successful with remote learning!

1. Make a schedule.
Having a consistent daily schedule can allow everyone to feel prepared and ready for their day. Organizing their schedule around your schedule as a parent can ease some stress of working at home and having your kids schooling at home. Consistency is key! For example, if you have math first one day, math should be first every day. Visualize your schedule by printing it out, writing it on a dry erase or chalk board, or making a clickable schedule on their laptop. Set alarms for zoom classes to keep everyone on schedule without having to have it all memorized.
Picture
2. Take a typing class.
Younger kids who have not had a lot of school experience are feeling overwhelmed. Not only do they have to sit in front of a computer all day, they also must know how to use one! Getting your student typing classes can help teach kids the basics of typing properly with exercises on what all of the keys mean and how to use them. Typing Club offers free classes and exercises to help get your child prepped for remote learning! https://www.typingclub.com

3. Give lots of Breaks.
Breaking up the schedule can help your student focus better and be ready to learn. Everyone need breaks throughout their day, whether it’s for snacks, exercise or just to rest their eyes from the screen breaks can help kids feel more independent in remote learning as long as there is consistency. Students thrive on consistency! One tip from a parent was to have activity kits ready for when your child is in between classes and you do not have the time to get them started on something. If the child has activities at their workspace it can help keep them focused and entertained until you can get around to
helping them.

4. Give kids an outlet to discuss emotions.
One of things to not lose sight on is that you are still their parent, not just their new teacher, or helper with school assignments. By having kids write in a journal they can process their feelings in this uncertain time. A nice addition to your daily schedule is to set aside time to talk as a family about how everyone is feeling and coping with everything.

4. Optimizing the Learning Space.
Having a learning space free of distractions, noise, tv and other forms of entertainment can optimize the student’s learning process. Having access to all supplies at their space, within reach that is well organized can also help kids with becoming distracted from needing to leave their learning space to go elsewhere in the home.

In response to COVID-19 and Thompson School District’s decision to continue remote learning in schools, Thompson Education Foundation (TEF) and the Literacy Committee of Loveland Rotary Club each committed $10,000 ($20,000 total) to support remote learning for students in 2020. The first purchase was for 5,000 books for students who are participating in TSD’s emergency food distribution program. The books were purchased for all grade levels, PreK-12. In addition, Thompson Education Foundation supplied 500 school supply kits to supplement at-home learning for elementary and secondary students without access to supply resources at home. Best Christmas Wedding Inspiration

12/16/2020

Christmas isn’t just for gathering with friends and family to celebrate the season - it’s also a beautiful time to plan a winter wedding! A December/Christmas inspired wedding is the perfect opportunity to not only celebrate your love, but to also throw the best holiday party ever!

We’ve curated a list of some holiday inspired wedding tips and ideas that will surely get you and your guests into the seasonal spirit, and elevate your event beyond the typical holiday celebration!

  • Set the tone with a styled invitation suite. If you are planning on sending physical invitations to your guests, consider taking the extra step of styling an invitation suite to set the scene for your wedding. Add accents like ornaments, ribbon, glittery sparkles and perhaps greenery to your invitations. These extra touches are a great way to remind guests that you are not only gathering to celebrate your love, but the holidays with them.

When you create your invitation suite, make sure you include the following: Invitation for event, directions, response cards & envelopes, inner envelope, mailing envelope, and plenty of postage. You might also consider adding a special reception card, local highlights information, and suggestions for accommodations for out of town guests.

Picture
Ceremony & Reception Decor  Greenery and red poinsettias are natural choices for Christmas wedding decor (hello, every Hallmark Christmas movie!). You can certainly get creative with how you use these elements. Use greenery garlands to outline reception areas, set up vignettes around white-lighted Christmas trees, include layers of red and white poinsettias as a backdrop for your ceremony. The possibilities are endless.

You don’t have to settle for a red and green color palette, either. How about deep navy and silver? White twinkle lights and gold? All of these options are holiday inspired!

Bouquets & Boutonnieres

There are so many extra touches that you can add to a holiday bridal bouquet and boutonniere! Pinecones are a fun and wintry addition to any Christmas-inspired bouquet. Berries and pine sprigs are also easy festive elements to incorporate. Did you know, according to ancient folklore, the Druids regarded holly as a sacred plant and believed it had magical powers of protection? Definitely consider adding some holly to your floral arrangements for good luck!
Picture
Jingle Bells! With a holiday wedding you can capitalize on both Jingle Bells and Wedding Bells! Hand out small bells for guests to ring after the ceremony instead of birdseed or bubbles. Guests can also ring their bells when they want a kiss from the bride and groom during the reception, instead of using their silverware on china to call for this tradition.

Serve festive cocktails.  You can expand the typical bar with holiday flavors including eggnog, peppermint, and cranberry. Holiday drinks often look fancy with extra flourishes and flair - perfect for a fancy wedding reception!

Incorporate holiday inspired guest favors.  Guests will be excited to receive a memento that they will actually want to keep! Engraved holiday ornaments with your wedding date, or their names carved or written on a themed ornament will remind your guests of your special day for years to come!

You can also send your guests home with tasty treats too! Holiday cookies, gold wrapped chocolates, or even packaged homemade eggnog will surely be hits!

Picture

Hot Cocoa and Cookies - Santa’s favorite!  Why not consider offering a hot cocoa bar in addition to the spirits you serve? Perhaps include a wide offering of Christmas and Holiday cookies for dessert instead of the traditional wedding cake or cupcakes? You’re guests will enjoy making their own hot cocoa concoctions and dunking their favorite holiday cookies in them for fun!

Think Texture. There are so many different textures that you can incorporate into your clothing, decor, and venue to inspire holiday magic. Velvet dresses and accessories for brides and bridesmaids, plaids and cording for grooms and groomsmen, gold and silver accents, wood and greenery, snow and ice…...all special holiday touches.

Create a cozy atmosphere. Cozy fires, twinkle lights, candles, and scents of the season, will be an inviting touch for your guests. Create intimacy by utilizing non traditional seating arrangements for dinner - family style serving, seating in groups, long tables, couches and overstuffed chairs by fireplaces.

Virtual Family Holiday Celebrations

12/13/2020

We know there are many families who will not be gathering together over the holidays this year. Even though families won't physically be together, there are still ways to honor special traditions and celebrate with one another, virtually!
Here are some ideas to spruce up your family’s online celebrations this year:

  • Dress up! Halloween might be a thing of the past, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have some good old dressin’ up fun! Why not dress up like Buddy the Elf or another favorite holiday character (The Grinch, anyone?). You could also dress every family member in a series of ugly Christmas sweaters - heck, you could even turn this into a contest between groups!

If crazy dress up is not your style, use this gathering as an excuse to ditch the covid sweatpants and fix yourself up a bit!

Picture
  • Get in the mood early with some creative and festive cocktails. The possibilities are endless when it comes to festive spirits and drinks. Share your recipes among family members and toast each other online - together, apart!
  • Play some games! There are so many options when it comes to online group games. You can download fan favorites, Jack Box Games, and play a series with your family members near and far!
For families with younger children in the mix, you can adapt “Simon Says” to “Santa Says” and create a new favorite activity!
Create a Christmas BINGO game, Christmas Pictionary, or a Christmas Scavenger Hunt. The possibilities are endless!
  • Sing Christmas Carols together!  There probably won’t be any carolers stopping by houses this year, due to the pandemic, but that doesn’t mean you still can’t enjoy this experience. Try singing a few together online - or have each family perform their favorite Christmas song for the others watching on zoom!
  • Invite Santa to join! This will surely be a hit with families that have a lot of younger children. Invite your favorite Santa to join in on your Zoom (or twist your Uncle’s arm to dress the part!) Kiddos will be excited to see Santa on the Zoom screen, for sure!

Ways to Say Good-Bye to the Dumpster Fire That Was 2020

12/11/2020

Picture
Wow! 2020 - what a year?! There aren’t quite enough words to describe all of the feelings, emotions, and happenings of this past year. We have a few new words and meanings to add to our vocabularies and vernacular - pandemic (not really new, but used more this past year than probably ever before), virtual, socially distanced, hybrid, and Zoom.

As event planners, New Year’s Eve is typically the perfect excuse to throw an awesome party! This year we won’t be throwing any huge gatherings or celebrations. 2020 was quite a ride of ups and downs. But - we’ve survived and made it, and that is something worth celebrating!

We’ve come up with an extensive list of ways to say good-bye to this dumpster-fire of a year, and welcome in 2021 - what we hope will be a year full of healing, health, and goodness!

  • Burn Sage. All of the sage.  This suggestion might be a bit tongue-in-cheek, but there are actual cleansing practices and rituals around burning sage. It has to do with centering the self and cleansing the energy that surrounds us. Some people who use this practice note that they sense a change in their environment. They sense less negativity around them, and a boost in positivity. We think that anything that puts someone in a positive mindset is a good thing - especially after this often dark year.

  • Make a 2020 Pinata. What better way to work out your frustrations with 2020 than to beat the heck out of them with a rubber bat? This could be a fun, family centered activity, too! You can make a pinata in any shape that suits you and your family, but we think a Pandemic Pinata is the perfect way to say goodbye to 2020! You’ll literally be beating Covid-19 with a stick!
Picture
  • Dance it out! Get your body moving and your blood pumping, and dance 2020 away! Get everyone you’re celebrating with to choose a song, and then have one big dance party playlist! You can even do this during a virtual party. Spotify has a feature that allows multiple users to edit a playlist. What a fun way to celebrate together - apart!

  • Hold a virtual Festivus Party with friends. Ah, Festivus. If ever there was a year to celebrate this holiday, it would be 2020! Hold a virtual Festivus Party where everyone has a chance to air their grievances. We’ve got some great Festivus ideas on our Festivus inspired Pinterest Board.

  • Create a Vision Board for 2021 and beyond. Vision boards are a great tool in helping you reach your goals. A collage of images, a vision board represents your goals and dreams. It can be a great way to center yourself, focus on good things to come, and prepare for the new year.

  • Support a local Chinese restaurant. Order take-out and ask for extra fortune cookies. You are bound to get some good news, right!?!
Picture
  • Dedicate the day to random acts of kindness.  What better way to drum up good vibes and karma for yourself than to offer goodness and kindness to others? Spend New Year’s Eve or another day of your choice, seeing who can spread the most kindness. A kindness contest if you will. 2021 will surely be better because of it!  Book recommendation: 365 Ways to Live Generously

  • Research and book sessions with a life coach or therapist. Mental health is important for everyone. This year, more than ever, paying close attention and nurturing our mental states has been even more important. Making a resolution to focus on mental health is a good way to start 2021 off right. Here’s a list of Life Coach Therapists located in Colorado.

  • Go Axe Throwing. Yet another great way to get your 2020 frustrations out! There are axe throwing establishments and bars opening up all over Northern Colorado. When it is safe to gather, get out and throw a few axes. You can pretend that the bulls-eye is the coronavirus, your failed hopes and dreams of 2020, or anything that vexes you - it’s a safe alternative, and a fun way to celebrate with friends!

However you choose to say goodbye to 2020 and welcome 2021, we at My Big Day Marketing & Events wish you all the best - health, happiness, and fortune in the New Year!

Next time you’re out in Larimer County, Make the Call for a safe ride home!

Picture
The No DUI Larimer coalition and campaign was born out of the need to address the problem of impaired driving in our community. The goal is to prevent driving under the influence of alcohol or other substances by increasing community responsibility for safe and responsible driving.

Our campaign is encouraging the public to “Make the Call” to end impaired driving in our community. Make the Call to get a safe ride home. Make the Call about whether you should get behind the wheel, and Make the Call to report suspected impaired drivers. Driving under the influence IS an emergency–please call 911 if you see someone you suspect is driving impaired.

Ending impaired driving is a joint effort between law enforcement, government agencies, alcohol and cannabis retailers, local nonprofits, and the community. We need your help to stop impaired driving before it happens, and when it’s happening. Thanks for doing your part.

How To Host an Office Holiday Celebration During COVID-19: 10 Unique Ideas

12/8/2020

Picture

Non-Party Holiday Celebration Ideas
Not ready for a virtual party but still want to show your employees you appreciate them this season? Check out these ideas for celebrating with them this year – no party needed.

1. High-end holiday gifts. Many employers are finding that the budget for hosting an in-person holiday party can easily cover very nice gifts for each of their employees. Trend forecasters have seen a surge in employer purchases of items like Apple AirPods and bluetooth speakers. Check out Swag in a Box to send custom employee gift boxes with your company’s branding.
Picture
2. Virtual group classes. Another trend in COVID-safe holiday experiences for employees is virtual group classes in subjects like cooking and crafting. Classes give employees a chance to bond outside the office, and a cooking class usually costs less per head than catering for your typical holiday office party.

3. Gift exchange. Organize an employee gift exchange via snail mail. Choose a White Elephant theme, or have employees choose gifts they think others would really like. Make sure to set a budget, and use a gift exchange tracking form to stay organized.
Picture
4. Virtual beer or wine tasting. Sites like Wine.com  send tasting flights to your doorstep. Employees can do the tasting on their own time and view complimentary tasting walk-throughs on the website, or you can set up a virtual meeting for your employees to taste together.

Colorado’s own Denver Microbrew Tour offers a structured 90-minute team building beer tasting activity starting at $200.

5. Virtual escape room experience. Colorado’s Conundrum Escape Rooms  offers virtual events starting at $75 with a focus on teambuilding. Employees will solve a series of mysteries to “escape” and beat the challenge. Schedule easily online https://www.conundrumescaperooms.com.

With so many employers going virtual for their office holiday parties this year during COVID-19, unique celebration ideas abound. Here are some of our favorites.

1.
Choose a fun theme. Host a virtual ugly sweater contest, or go with a funny COVID-19  theme like, “2020 2021 is Our Year!”

2. Bring the games. A virtual game party can be as simple as asking employees to download a game app (a popular one is Werewolf [https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.faudroids.werewolf&hl=en_US]) to participate, or hiring a company like Outback Team Building [https://try.outbackteambuilding.com/virtual-team-building-remote-teams-snacknation/] to create and host a customized game for your employees.

3. Hire entertainment. Let’s face it – we could all use a few laughs right about now. Bring a professional stand-up comedian to your virtual party using a service like Laughter on Call . Laughter on Call will handle all the Zoom planning and hosting, while you sit back and enjoy the fun with your employees.

4. Let employees order food simultaneously with Hoppier. Like catering for virtual events, Hoppier allows employers to designate a food allowance to each employee to use for food delivery during a virtual party. Even better, employees get to choose what they want to eat, meaning no cold buffet leftovers at the end of the night.

5. Send party decorations. Ahead of your party, mail a gift box to each employee with balloons, streamers, party poppers, crowns...the sky is the limit! Each employee can decorate their own space and get in the festive spirit for your holiday party, even from afar.

2020 Realities for Children NightLights

12/6/2020

My Big Day was proud to be asked to help pull together a new way to pull off a historic event in Old Town Fort Collins, the Realities for Children NightLights Tree Lighting.
A 23 year old tradition embraced by the community, we knew that COVID was going to make re-inventing this loved event quite a challenge.
Picture
With the help of many community partners, we were able to pull of a spectacular Live Stream of the NightLights tree lighting, with thousands of live viewers and impressive donations to this deserving charity serving Northern Colorado.

If you aren't familiar with Realities for Children, you should be.
Realities For Children provides for the unmet needs of northern Colorado children who have been abused, neglected or are at-risk. We do this by providing emergency funding, youth activities, critical distributions and collaboration resources for our Partner Youth Agencies.

Realities For Children was incorporated in 1995 and has been funding the unmet needs of Larimer County children who have been abused, neglected or are at-risk since 1996. Currently, Realities For Children supports the services of 39 Partner Youth Agencies and represents nearly 250 Business Members invested in making it their business to make a difference.

Gratitude for Our Teachers

11/27/2020

Picture
November is the month of gratitude. Of being thankful for the things and people in our lives and appreciating everything life has to offer us. One thing we often overlook are all of the hard-working teachers and school district staff members who work so hard to educate our kids in the best way they can! Thompson Education Foundation annually provides people in the community a chance to nominate a teacher or Thompson School District staff member they believe does an outstanding job in education.
Awards are given in the following categories:

  • Elementary Teacher of the Year (early childhood - grade 5)
  • Secondary Teacher of the Year (grade 6 - Grade 12)
  • Principal of the Year
  • TSD Staff of the Year (Classified, APT, Nutrition Services, Counseling, Transportation, etc.)
Does your teacher go above and beyond her/his normal duties? What about your
principle or another one of the schools’ staff? Educator of the Year is about recognizing that we can not do this alone. We need our teachers and the entire staff behind them to prepare our kids for greatness! Nominations begin November 30th 2020. Click here for more information

Educator of the Year sponsor, King Buick GMC, feels the best way to give back to the
community is through education support: building strong programs that will produce a highly
trained workforce that can increase innovation and energy for American manufacturing. To Honor Thompson School District educators, King Buick GMC provides a new loaner car for 60 days to each teacher of the year winner in all categories and a 24 month new loaner car to The
TEF Educator of the Year.

This year has been especially difficult for teachers and students and even parents with having to learn remotely. Keep this in mind when dealing with your child’s teachers. Have patience and gratitude for what they have to go through and maybe consider sending them a thank you present. Click here for many Teacher Appreciation Gift Ideas

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us here at MBD Marketing and Events and remember to stay safe and find the things in life that you can be grateful for!!
