Advice on Picking the Perfect Wedding Venue

5/8/2018

Picture
Picture
Every couple wants to create the ideal ambiance for their wedding. Choosing the perfect venue for your wedding and reception is all about location and your personal preferences. Your venue should complement the theme of your wedding and speak to your love story, faith or maybe even your passions.

Some religions state that the couple should get married in their place of worship. So religion may be the main driving force in choosing your wedding venue. But even if you plan to say “I Do” in a place of worship, your reception venue can be somewhere unique.

Couples who are open to alternative settings for their vow exchange can and should think about unique venues like museums, parks, botanical gardens or even the beach (if you’re on the coast). Think about how the venue will photograph, and how the location will look as a backdrop.
Of course, you also need to consider the guest list. Is the location easily accessible for guests?
What about parking?
And public restrooms?

When looking at alternative locations, couples should take all aspects of the venue or site into account. As for choosing the reception venue, an entirely unique location may be selected. While some couples exchange vows and hold their reception at the same location, others choose to have their after-party elsewhere.

Here are a few tips to decide how to choose the ideal locations for the vow exchange and the reception:

Make sure the locations are close.

If you’re getting married on the beach, consider reception venues that are nearby.

Look at hotels, restaurants or other sites for guests to gather after the vow exchange. Some hotels on the beach also offer all-inclusive wedding packages. So you can have your ceremony near the water and the reception indoors…or even on the patio!
Picture

Picture

Budget is everything. Before you even begin looking for the perfect wedding site, you need to understand your financial bottom line.

That beautiful cathedral might charge more than you can afford, but your local family church may allow you to host your wedding ceremony for a nominal fee if you’re a member.

The money bottom line also speaks to your reception venue. Yes, that grand resort may seem like the picturesque place to host your guests, but you cannot spend the entire budget on just the reception!

Ask about the site rules and regulations.
Some venues may require you to use their on-site catering or may stipulate what you can or cannot bring on site. Ask about any rules and constraints...you may even want to inquire about any limitations on décor.

If the venue is a closed space, and you’re an allergy sufferer, you also may want to make sure your florist steers clear of
flowers that aggravate allergies (like daisies or sunflowers).
Check the reviews.
If you’re not planning to marry in a house of worship, and you’re looking for a unique venue, always check the reviews before committing or forking over a down-payment. Read all the reviews and then tour the location.

Ask for recommendations.
If you hired a wedding planner, don’t be shy about asking for site recommendations.
Talk to your planner about your personal preferences and be open about your budget; your planner likely will have some great suggestions.

Think about a home-based ceremony.
If your budget is tight, you could consider hosting the ceremony in your backyard. Or in the backyard of your parents’ house. You’ll need to be sure that the space can accommodate your guest list, however.
Picture
Picture
Choosing the right wedding venue is all about finding the destination that strikes the right note. Your ceremony location should speak to your story, personality and even your passions. If the two of you love the outdoors, consider hosting your nuptials at a park or on the beach. Some museums and historic sites also may be open for wedding events. Know your budget before exploring sites, and always read reviews of venues before committing. No matter where you plan your big day, just remember that the vows matter most…not the location.

The NoCo Road Rally is back!

5/5/2018

Our 1st Annual NoCo Road Rally sold out last year, and we are so glad that participants loved this creative event! Tickets go on sale soon for our 2nd Annual NoCo Road Rally, which will be held on June 23rd, 2018.
Picture
A road rally is a kind of motorized sport. Similar to "The Amazing Race," it is a competition of accuracy not speed.  Participants are sent out in teams, with a goal of navigating the course from start to finish while solving clues and completing challenges along the way - then arriving at the final destination first.

Our road rally scavenger hunt requires the driver and their team to decode clues while still maintaining the most efficient travel time possible.
Road Rally's (or sometimes called car rally) scavenger hunts have been celebrated across America for years and years.  Participants are given clues about where to start, and they must solve a clue or complete a puzzle at every stage along the way.

There are many variations of a Road Rally, and My Big Day has YEARS of experience putting on fun scavenger hunts.  We know you'll have a good time!  This year the NoCo Road Rally is in Loveland. Learn more HERE

Not only is this a fun night out, it's for a great cause.... and you could win CASH!!!

Tickets are $150 per car (for the entire team!)

Wedding Etiquette in the Age of Social Media

4/29/2018

Social media and omnipresent technology has changed the way couples plan their weddings. Today’s events now have their own wedding hashtag and web site. And it’s also not uncommon for couples to use social platforms as a means to share event updates.

But how much technology is too much for such a private occasion? Nothing ever disappears on the ‘net, and sometimes this reality can lead to an ultimate nightmare—and perhaps even a cancelled wedding! So how much is too much when it comes to utilizing technology?

Like all wedding details, even technology requires a little bit of grace and etiquette. When pulling in social networks for your wedding—and the ‘net—here are a few tips to keep in mind and to keep you from becoming too tangled in the world wide web of weddings.
Don’t overshare.

Yes, everyone loves a quick Facebook or twitter update about your weddings. However, some details need to be kept under wraps. Like your wedding dress designer and, of course, the dress itself. Do post a few crazy dresses that you vetoed, though. The poufier the better! When posting updates, also be sure to not give away any surprises for guests.
Picture
Don’t email a thank you note.  Always send a thank you note for any shower or wedding gifts received. However, never, ever email a note of thanks. Etiquette dictates that thank you notes should be handwritten. Keep it short and sweet, but make that note personal!

Share registry info via word of mouth.
Some couples think that wedding registry information can be sent with an invite. Think again! While you can post your registries on a wedding website, the information about registries must be shared via word of mouth.

Keep certain ‘fun’ pictures private.  No one needs to see those crazy—and perhaps embarrassing—photos of the bachelor or bachelorette parties. Do not ever share embarrassing photos of guests, the bride, the groom or any friends without permission.
Picture
Understand the copyrights. The couple does not necessarily own the rights to photos taken by a professional photographer. Often copyrights are owned by the photographer, and you need permission to share any copyrighted image. Don’t post copyrighted images on social media unless you get written permission from your photographer. This is something that can easily be added to your contract.

Set tech boundaries for guests.  If you don’t want hundreds of phones snapping pictures at your wedding, then make sure guests are aware of your wishes. It’s ok to tell guests to keep their phones off during your wedding. This ensures that you aren’t distracted by all those flashing phones and that a guest’s ringer doesn’t disrupt your vows!

Technology and the web can add to how we plan and commemorate a wedding. However, sometimes there can be too much tech. Use social media and technology to add to your wedding, but don’t go overboard to the point of being tech obsessed. Share a few details via Facebook or Twitter and keep out-of-town friends and family updated on the important happenings. But avoid spilling secrets and surprises and definitely don’t post any photos that could embarrass a friend or relative. If you want guests to limit their use of technology at your wedding, make sure that all guests know that phones cannot be used carte blanche throughout the ceremony.  Set boundaries and stick to them, and always use common sense before posting anything online—especially when a copyright is involved!

Exciting Event Venues in Boulder, CO!

4/26/2018

Recently the My Big Day team went on an all day site visit with our friends at the Boulder CVB to get caught up on all the new, exciting venues in Boulder, Colorado.
We traveled around town in style in their Volkswagon bus! While the day offered some weather surprises, our hosts, Angela and Fig made for great company!!!!
Picture
We started our day with a visit at the Embassy Suites by Hilton Boulder & Hilton Garden Inn Boulder.
We loved both of these spaces - very fresh, clean and contemporary. Our team noticed all the natural light they offered, and amazing art!  Groups large and small will love the variety of meeting and conference space now available - and at multiple properties so close to each other!

Our favorite features:
  • The hotel dog who lives on property
  • Great community seating inside and out
  • The art
  • The boardroom
  • The breakout spaces
  • So much versatility!

After our tour of the Hilton properties, we headed over to the Boulder JCC. What an outstanding building!
There were so many thoughtful touches and state of the art features. Our entire team was really impressed!

Our favorite features:
  • The multi-purpose gym
  • The library
  • The state-of-the art ballroom
  • Bring your own alcohol
  • Bring your own caterer
  • The room perfect for childcare during an event
  • Views of the flatirons

Our lunchtime stop was at the Rayback Collective. At first it was difficult to figure out what the space was, but then we realized that it could be anything! A bar, a workspace, a venue for your event, a place to grab a bite or listen to live music... it's a true community asset.

We learned about the rental spaces indoors, then carefully assessed whether to grab a cocktail, a coffee or Kombucha!

We also enjoyed some tasty lunch from the food trucks.

Our favorite features:
  • The chill, Boulder vibe
  • The variety of food & drink options in one place
  • The outdoor area
  • How multipurpose the space is

Our next stop was in Downtown Boulder, the amazing Rembrandt Yard.
Not only is the Rembrandt Yard an art gallery, but it is an event space that offers so many unique features.
With 2 levels, wood floors and windows that look out on downtown Boulder, this space can be anything you dream it to be.

Our favorite features:
  • The unique backdrop of having original art on the walls, and a picturesque downtown out the windows
  • A liquor store down the street will deliver alcohol to your event
  • Guests can stay across the street at the historic Boulderado Hotel
  • The small, private space on the upper level is a perfect company meeting space, or room for the bride to relax before she walks down the isle
  • We love this space for winter weddings!

Our final visit was to the famous Hotel Boulderado in Downtown Boulder. So much about this hotel needs no description. The history, the location, the design... all reasons to love it and to book your special occasion here.

Words like CLASSIC, DISTINGUISHED, and REGAL all come to mind when describing the feeling when walking through this venue.

Our favorite features:
  • License No. 1, the speakeasy from the 1920's
  • The stained glass ceiling in the heart of the hotel
  • The many event spaces
  • Their perfect setting downtown
  • All of the history!
