A little bit about our President

3/17/2022

A bit about our President, Christine K Forster...

For the past 15 years, Christine has built a name for herself and My Big Day in our community. By design, she has remained mostly out of the spotlight - working behind the scenes to ensure clients are cared for, happy and receiving excellent service and advice.

Every once in a while we are asked to provide sound bites, interviews or quotes about the events industry. We have been fortunate to be featured in many national publications and shows.

Locally, we truly care about making a difference in our community and supporting fellow business owners, entrepreneurs and community partners.

Recently, The Group Real Estate interviewed Christine on what makes her tik. See below.

Wedding Words- What to Say; Readings for your BIG DAY

2/10/2022

We love our tradition of asking couples who attend our Loveland Valentine's Day Wedding & Vow Renewal Ceremony to submit readings with special meaning to them.
We have had some wonderful submissions over the years! Below are some ideas for our future wedding couples when looking for the RIGHT WORDS!
Picture
"The Gift," Pam Brown
“In you are flowers and firelight,
stars and songbirds,
the scent of summer,
the stillness just before dawn.
I love you today,
dressed in glory.
I will love you always-
dancing, singing, reading, making, planning, arguing.
I will love you cantankerous, and tired,
courageous and in terror,
joyful, fearful and triumphant.
I will love you through all weathers and all change.
For all you are is precious to me.
And every day I live with you
and share your love
is a gift to me.”

"Slow Me Down, Lord!," Wilferd A. Peterson
“Let me look upward
into the branches of the towering oak
and know that it is great and strong
because it grew slowly and well.
Slow me down, Lord,
and inspire me to send my roots deep
into the soil of nature’s enduring values
that I may grow towards the stars
of my greater destiny.”

"New Beginnings," Barbara Crooker
“May this be a day of new beginnings
the sun, like a fragrant apple; the summer air,
soft on your hands as the kiss of a child.
May berries melt like honey on your tongue.
May your heart rise in wonder
at the clouds drifting across the sky.
May the trails under your boots
be covered in pine quills,
let the leaves rain down
like memories
in the autumn of your heart.
May the snow beneath your skis
run as fast as watered silk,
may the cold air kiss your cheeks,
turn them red as summer's roses.
May the rivers always flow
with their unexpected beauty,
the first freshets of snowmelt,
the rush of early spring. May you always walk in gladness
through whatever path or highway;
may you always walk within the golden circle of your love.”

"In One Another’s Souls," Rumi
“The moment I heard my first love story
I started looking for you,
not knowing how useless that was.
Lovers don’t meet somewhere along the way.
They’re in one another’s souls all along.”

"Now Touch The Air Softly," William Jay Smith
“Now touch the air softly, step gently, one, two...
I’ll love you ’till roses are robin’s-egg blue;
I’ll love you till gravel is eaten for bread,
And lemons are orange, and lavender’s red.
Now touch the air softly, swing gently the broom.
I’ll love you till windows are all of a room;
And the table is laid, And the table is bare,
And the ceiling reposes on bottomless air.
I’ll love you ‘till heaven rips the stars from his coat,
And the moon rows away in a glass-bottomed boat;
And Orion steps down like a river below,
And earth is ablaze, and the oceans aglow.
So touch the air softly, and swing the broom high.
We will dust the grey mountains, and sweep the blue sky:
And I’ll love you as long as the furrow the plough,
As however is ever, and ever is now.”

"In Your Light I Learn How to Love," Rumi“
In your light I learn how to love.
In your beauty, how to make poems.
You dance inside my chest, where no one sees you,
but sometimes I do, and that sight becomes this art.”

"I Saw Two Clouds at Morning," John G. C. Brainard“
I saw two clouds at morning,
tinged by the rising sun,
and in the dawn they floated on,
and mingled into one;
I thought that morning cloud was blest,
it moved so sweetly to the west.
I saw two summer currents
flow smoothly to their meeting,
and join their course, with silent force,
in peace each other greeting;
calm was their course through banks of green,
while dimpling eddies played between.
Such be your gentle motion,
‘till life’s last pulse shall beat;
like summer’s beam and summer’s stream,
float on in joy, to meet
a calmer sea, where storms shall cease,
a purer sky, where all is peace.”

"Touched By An Angel," Maya Angelou“
We, unaccustomed to courage
exiles from delight
live coiled in shells of loneliness
until love leaves its high holy temple
and comes into our sight
to liberate us into life.
Love arrives
and in its train come ecstasies
old memories of pleasure
ancient histories of pain.
Yet if we are bold,
love strikes away the chains of fear
from our souls.
We are weaned from our timidity
In the flush of love's light
we dare be brave
And suddenly we see
that love costs all we are
and will ever be.
Yet it is only love
which sets us free.”
Picture
"A Wedding Toast," James Bertolino
“May your love be firm,
And may your dream of a life together
be a river between two shores
by day bathed in sunlight, and by night
illuminated from within. May the heron
carry news of you to the heavens, and the salmon bring
the sea’s blue grace. May your twin thoughts spiral upward
like leafy vines, like fiddle strings in the wind,
and be as noble as the Douglas fir.
May you never find yourselves back to back
without love pulling you around
into each other’s arms.”

"At Nightfall," Charles Hanson Towne
“I need so much the quiet of your love
After the day’s loud strife;
I need your calm all other things above
After the stress of life.
I crave the haven that in your dear heart lies,
After all toil is done;
I need the star shine of your heavenly eyes,
After the day’s great sun.”

"It Was Said With Such Authority," Gary E. McCormick
“I’ll give you the gist of
what was said
It was about love
and the sayer
said it had nothing to do with receiving
He said
love was all about giving
plain and simple
You could tell this guy
walked the talk
He made it clear
you must love yourself
before you can
begin to love another
The guy reminded me
of that lover from Galilee”

"Devoted," Lori Eberhai
“My heart can be your home,
my soul can be your refuge.
You can turn to me when you are weak,
you can call to me when the way is not clear.
I will be your promise and your prayer,
I will always be there,
Constant and complete.
Run to me,
reach out for me,
and I will love you in a unique and tender way.
Bring your love to me,
share your love with me,
sing your love to me,
and I will offer you peace, ease and comfort.”

"The Privileged Lovers," Rumi
“The moon has become a dancer at this festival of love.
This dance of light, this sacred blessing, this divine love,
beckons us to a world beyond, only lovers can see with their eyes of fiery passion.
They are the chosen ones who have surrendered.
Once they were particles of light, now they are the radiant sun.
They have left behind the world of deceitful games.
They are the privileged lovers who create a new world
with their eyes of fiery passion.”

"How Do I Love Thee?," Elizabeth Barrett Browning
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of being and ideal grace.
I love thee to the level of every day's
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for right.
I love thee purely, as they turn from praise.
I love thee with the passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints. I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life; and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.
Picture
"[i carry your heart with me(i carry it in]," E.E. Cummings
i carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go,my dear;and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)

i fear no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want
no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you
here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart

"Stardust," Lang Leav
If you came to me with a face I have not seen, with a name I have never heard, I would still know you. Even if centuries separated us, I would still feel you. Somewhere between the sand and the stardust, through every collapse and creation, there is a pulse that echoes of you and I.

When we leave this world, we give up all our possessions and our memories. Love is the only thing we take with us. It is all we carry from one life to the next.

1 Corinthians 13:4-8
4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

The Importance of Field Trips in Education

1/19/2022

Most people's fondest grade school memories involve boarding a bus, traveling off to explore someplace new. Field Trips feel like a day off school, a break, a chance to feel like a real human rather than just a kid. Most kids don't realize that field trips are a really an in-depth learning experience than regular day-to-day classroom moments. Studies and statics from all over the country have proven that field trips are more than just a day of fun.
Social-Emotional Learning Experience

Teaching students social-emotional traits and behaviors is often a complicated matter. Diverse classrooms with students from all different types of backgrounds and living situations make teaching things like self-awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision making extremely difficult in the classroom set up. A study done by the University of Arkansas found that field trips give students “stronger critical-thinking skills” and that they, “exhibit increased historical empathy, display higher levels of tolerance, and have a greater taste for consuming art and culture.”

Picture
Academic Improvement

Many students learn best by visual and hands-on learning. The U.S. Travel Association conducted a study that revealed that “regardless of gender, ethnicity or socioeconomic status, youth who take educational trips have better grades (59 percent), higher graduation rates from high school (95%) and college (63%), and greater income (12% higher annually). In fact, 89% said educational trips had a positive, lasting impact on their education and career because the trips made them more engaged, intellectually curious and interested in and out of school.”[1]

Practical Knowledge

Being stuck in a classroom day in and day out for the entire school year is not only a daunting thought, but it can often contribute to students feeling burnt out and detached from the real world. Getting out to see a museum, a farm, or even just the local library can help expand a student’s world and mind. “The best field trips can bring two seemingly unrelated worlds together.”
Picture
Professional Development

If you ask successful adults today about their field trip memories, chances are you will find a few who had an eye-opening field trip experience which helped to lead them to the career they are in today. Getting the chance to see a symphony, going to a construction site or a university can get students thinking about what they are passionate about and what they want to achieve in their adult lives.

  •  3 cinnamon sticks (extra for garnish)
  •  4 star anise (extra for garnish)
  •  2-4 tablespoons honey (optional)
  • Optional add-ins: ¼ cup brandy, cognac, bourbon, or whiskey; cranberries, apple slices, vanilla

1. Combine ingredients. Add wine, orange slices, cloves, cinnamon, star anise, honey, and any add-ins to a large saucepan or slow cooker. Stir to combine.

2. Stovetop: Cook the mulled wine on medium-high heat until it just barely reaches a simmer (do not boil – you do not want to cook off the alcohol). Reduce heat to low, cover, and let the wine simmer for at least 15 minutes or up to 3 hours.

Slow cooker: Heat on low for about an hour until hot, and then reduce heat to warm until ready to serve.

3. Using a fine mesh strainer, remove and discard the used orange slices and spices. Give the mulled wine a taste, and stir in extra sweetener if needed.

4. Serve warm in heatproof mugs, garnish with orange rounds, cinnamon sticks, and star anise.

MBD Interns, Where Are They Now?

6/24/2021

My Big Day Marketing and Events is celebrating their 15th Anniversary! Over the years MBD has had a number of interns... 15 in fact! Many stayed on and learned from and worked with My Big Day. Our past interns have grown and blossomed, and many still work in the event field. So where are they now and how are they doing?

Tiffany Rose is still working for MBD Events and Marketing as Manager, Magic Maker. She works as many events as she can and helps out with marketing while enjoying every moment! She is back in school for her Master’s Certificate in Marketing and hopes to stick with MBD forever! She is also busy planning her own wedding coming up in August of this year!
Picture
Katie Patterson is still with MBD Marketing and Events as Director, Community Wizard. She works events that are near her new home in Denver, travels to the mountains with us, and helps to manage as an event lead. Katie also works on marketing for some of our partners! She has her Masters in Communication Studies and is interested in community work focused in organizational outreach.
Picture
Lynzee Laney still works with MBD Marketing and Events as Coordinator, Sunshine Maker. She is also the Catering Manager at Nordy’s BBQ and Grill. She is a mother of two little ones and somehow is able to always have a smile on her face! Sarah Biekert who is My Big Day’s Coordinator, Punctuation Prodigy says, “I met Lynzee for the first time at Blue Federal Credit Union's Discovery Day in 2018, one month after I joined My Big Day. She was expecting her first child shortly at the time, and I remember being impressed by her energy and work ethic. She was one of the first friendly faces of My Big Day that I met, and I left that event feeling so excited to work for this company – fast forward three years later, and I still am!”

Picture
We caught up with the much-loved Brielle Welch to see how she is doing and she stated, “After MBD, I was an environmental educator and camp director at multiple kids camps and programs around Colorado. After that, I was the banquet manager for the Plaza Convention Center in Longmont. Next, I was a wedding coordinator at Lionsgate event center in Lafayette. Covid was hard, and I had to end my time there, but I think I was ready to leave and slow things down a bit. I am now a personal vacation advisor at Inspirato helping members book and plan their luxury vacations. I recently got engaged, and I will be married next year!”
Picture
Makenzie studied at University of Northern Colorado and interned with My Big Day a couple years ago. At the completion of her internship, she got offered a dream job in Florida, and now lives in Tampa with her fiancé!
Picture
Kasey graduated from CSU and interned with My Big Day post graduation. She is still living in Fort Collins, Colorado. She started a rope leash company with her friend in early 2018. We love your entrepreneurial spirit, Kasey!
Picture
When we asked Sarah what she is up to she responded happily saying, “An update since working with MBD, I got married in 2017 and my husband and I moved to Florida right after our wedding. We lived there for about a year, then moved to Maryland where we spent about a year and a half and then moved to Washington state and have been here for about a year and a half now. We had a little girl 1 year ago as of last week and we have been living life loving on her! I currently work as an office manager and spend our days hiking and chasing our daughter around.”
Picture
Victoria graduated with a marketing degree from University of Wyoming in 2015 and interned with MBD a couple years following. She is now living in Seattle Washington working as a marketing research assistant at Executive Insight Properties.
Picture
Yvette is one of our most recent interns, graduating from CSU in spring 2020. Yvette interned with us and one of our clients on a political campaign. She is still living in Colorado and works at A Precious Child, who MBD just happens to be planning a fundraiser for this Fall!

Our entire team is sending all of our former interns hugs and well wishes! We love watching your grow in your careers and witnessing your very full lives!

How the Movies Portray Event Planning, and What it Really Looks Like

3/25/2021

If you’ve been bingeing on wedding movies in preparation for your big day, titles like “The Wedding Planner,” “Bridesmaids,” and “Bride Wars” probably come to mind. We’ll admit, some of us enjoy a girls’ night in with these guilty pleasure films – but they’re not totally accurate in depicting the event planning world.

Here are a few things the movies get wrong about what event planning REALLY looks like:

The over-the-top weddings
Movie weddings tend to be extravagant and exaggerated, which can set unrealistic expectations for brides-to-be. Many of the weddings shown in these rom-coms would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to recreate – some over a million dollars.

Picture
Since the average amount couples budget for a wedding in the United States is $33,900, these weddings aren’t feasible for most couples to recreate. The good news is that we can help you create a magazine-worthy wedding even if your budget is less than a sixth of that national average.

The drama
Sure, we’ve seen some drama, but not every bride is a Bridezilla, not every mother-of-the-bride has a vendetta against the couple, and not every corporate client is difficult to work with. In fact, we love our clients, past and present.

Events are often stressful for clients. After all, it’s your big day, and there’s a lot at stake. But that’s why you hired us! Our job is to relieve that stress and keep the drama to a minimum so you can soak up every memorable moment.

Still - sometimes real life is even MORE unbelievable
What if the picturesque trolley you hired to shuttle guests to their hotels after your scenic mountain wedding can’t make it out of the icy parking lot? Or, what if a water pipe bursts in the wall just before your ceremony on a -20 degree day?

Yes, we have seen those things happen. Event planning requires equal parts perfectionism and flexibility. You don’t want your event planner to be a deer in headlights when something doesn’t go according to plan. That’s why you hire us!
Picture
We don’t get involved in clients’ personal lives
As tempted as we may be if our client were Matthew McConaughey, you won’t catch us out drinking and dancing with a groom-to-be. We help our clients navigate personal circumstances from a logistical perspective, but we won’t be hanging around outside of meetings or gossiping with family members.

We work as a team
Certainly, there are solo event planners out there who make it work. But we find that event planning works best as a team. Remember that burst water pipe we mentioned? While some of our team was collecting gushing water in trash cans and throwing it outside, the rest of us were seamlessly conducting a wedding ceremony in the next room – on time, we might add.

Meet our team of talented women here.

We don’t use code words
Okay, we could do this if we really wanted to, but we find it works just as well to communicate discreetly about what’s really going on. We always strive for transparency when it’s appropriate. And when we’re trying to mitigate your stress on the day of your big event, we’ll handle it as a team behind the scenes.
Picture
The perfect vision takes planning – and lots of logistics
If events magically fell into place, we’d be out of a job. Having a vision is great, but what happens when your dream venue doesn’t allow you to work with the outside caterer you had your heart set on?

Weddings and all other events require juggling lots of moving parts. If you have an event planner from the start, you won’t run into these issues. But even if you come to us further along in the process, don’t worry – we are great problem-solvers.

We don’t trash talk past clients with our current clients (and we certainly don’t take bets on how long marriages will last)
These things are unprofessional – not to mention just in bad taste. We wish all of our clients – couples, families, small businesses, and large corporations – the best, and we strive to give you the best. We won’t be broadcasting your pre-ceremony breakdown or the frustration you expressed during a high-stress time.

All this said, there are some films that do get it right. If you want to know what event planning is like behind the scenes, check out “Fyre” (a cautionary tale of event planning gone wrong), “The First Monday in May,” or “The Ultimate Wedding Planner.”

Need more convincing? Read about our top 10 reasons to hire a wedding planner. P.S. – these reasons also apply to work events, concerts, and anything else you can dream up!

Hire My Big Day – for business, for community, for love, and for fun.

11 Creative, Socially Safe Valentine's Day Ideas for Couples

1/14/2021

Picture
Valentine’s Day is yet another holiday that will be different this year, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be special. In fact, you may find that it’s all the more meaningful when you take the time to do something memorable with your partner despite everything else going on in the world.

Here are some of our favorite ideas for a socially safe Valentine’s date.
1. Get married or renew your vows at Loveland’s annual Group Valentine’s Day Wedding
Reimagined for COVID safety this year, this one-of-a-kind, nationally recognized event is a truly memorable way to spend Valentine’s Day with your loved one. Every couple gets a customized ceremony, keepsake photos, a lock to “Lock Your Love” at the famous LOVE or HEART sculptures in Loveland, gift bags from local businesses, signature wedding cupcakes, and a champagne toast, all for just $95 per couple. Find all the details and buy tickets online here: http://www.valentinesdayinloveland.com

2. Watch a Valentine’s Day movie with popcorn
Create the movie theater date experience at home with a rom-com and some popcorn (or another favorite movie snack). The best part about this date is that it can be done together, if you live with your partner, or virtually, if you live apart. Netflix even has a feature called “Netflix Party” that allows you to watch movies in sync and chat simultaneously – with none of the “Press play now!...No, wait, now! Okay, rewind.”
Picture
3. Order delivery or grab some takeout for a date night in
Bring the restaurant date night to you. Order in delivery or takeout from your favorite romantic restaurant - even fancy steakhouses and seafood restaurants are offering takeout during the pandemic. If you want to go all out, recreate the restaurant atmosphere at home with tablecloths, your best plates and glassware, and some candles and flowers to set the mood.

If you don’t live with your partner, you can still enjoy the meal together via video chat. You can even surprise your S.O. (significant other) with the romantic meal by ordering the food ahead of time to be delivered to them. Most restaurants with their own delivery system will offer this, as do Uber Eats’ share system and Grubhub.

4. Shop local gifts
Show your partner and struggling local businesses some love this year by choosing unique gifts from a small shop in your area. If you’re worried about going inside, many small businesses are offering curbside pickup, and some have even set up online ordering with shipping. If you live in NoCo, check out MBD’s local-centric Valentine’s Day gifts Pinterest board: https://www.pinterest.com/MyBigDayEvents/valentines-day-gifts/ full of unique products from Loveland, Fort Collins, Windsor, and more.
Picture
5. Stream a virtual concert
Virtual concerts are still happening - more than ever. If concerts are a favorite date night pastime for you, now you can recreate the music fan experience at home. You can now easily search Google for a list of upcoming virtual concerts. SongKick also has a great list you can bookmark: https://www.songkick.com/live-stream-concerts of live streaming concerts with times.

Clear the living room for slow dancing (or a mosh pit, if that’s more your vibe), have an in-home concert “tailgate,” and have your favorite concert drinks on hand.

6. Make chocolate fondue
Chocolate and romance go hand-in-hand, and nothing is more romantic than melted chocolate with fruit or sweets. You may not feel comfortable going to your favorite fondue restaurant this year, but you can bring the fondue experience home. You can buy a fondue pot online for as little as $15 these days, grab a box of strawberries, melt a bag of chocolate chips, and voilà.
7. Take a virtual cocktail or cooking class
Cocktails and cooking are popular couples pastimes that are equal parts romantic and team building exercises (with a dash of humor, too).

Cozymeal https://www.cozymeal.com/online-mixology-classes offers affordable cocktail classes for starting at $19 per device, so you can join in from anywhere. If you’re looking for a private experience, you’ll need to book out a class from a site like Equal Parts Co. https://www.equalpartsco.com/virtual-happy-hour-information, which will be pricey, but hey – maybe that’s just the luxury you need right now.

If cooking is your ideal romantic date night, Fort Collins’ own The Cooking Studio [https://www.the-cooking-studio.com/private-holiday-parties.html] offers tailor-made, private virtual or in-person classes for couples starting at $200. You’ll get a list of supplies and ingredients to pick up, a list of decadent savory and/or sweet options to choose from, and 1 - 1.5 hours of class time with your own chef.
Picture
8. Send Valentines through snail mail
Maybe you’re in a long distance relationship, or maybe you just want to surprise your partner with a note or two left around the house. Either way, handwritten notes are a romantic tradition that go a long way in today’s world of text messages and Snapchats.

Take your time writing (practice that cursive?) and, if you’re mailing your Valentine, use your nicest stationery or take some time to personalize what you have. Doodles or notes in the margins will make these keepsakes even more memorable, and you’ll love looking back on them together down the road.
Picture
9. Serve your loved one breakfast in bed
Surprise breakfast in bed is basically never a bad idea, if you ask us. Sneak out of bed early to prepare your loved one’s favorite meal (pizza is fine for breakfast, by the way) and surprise them with it.

Alternatively, cook breakfast together, then head back to bed to enjoy your culinary creations and spend the day being couch bed potatoes.

10. Connect virtually
If you can’t be together this Valentine’s Day, carve out some time to connect virtually. Phone calls, video calls, and virtual activities like an online class or Netflix movie party are an easy way to show someone you’re thinking of them. Other ideas include eating a meal or sharing a glass of wine “together,” live streaming the same concert, or solving a virtual escape room.
Picture
11. Get outdoors together
Coloradoans are known for our love of the outdoors, so take to one of your local trails or head up to the mountains with your partner for a romantic outing in nature. Hold hands, have intimate conversations, take in the scenery, practice teamwork, and boost your health all in one date.
