5 Ways to Support the 2020 Wedding Season’s “COVID Couples” (And 3 Things to Avoid)

9/22/2020

You may have friends or family members – dubbed “COVID Couples’ – who have had to postpone or cancel their weddings because of the pandemic. For most couples, this is a difficult decision to make, and may bring up feelings of sadness, anger, or even loss. Here are some ways to support the special people in your life whose weddings have been affected by COVID – and some things to avoid.

DO:

1. Send a surprise gift on their original wedding day. This is likely to be the most difficult day for the couple. Consider sending flowers, sweets, or a gift card for a takeout date night with a note saying you are thinking of them. If you’re on a budget, stick with a handwritten note dropped at their doorstep or surprise them with FaceTime or a phone call. Don’t forget about the groom!
Picture
2. Listen. Be a shoulder to cry on for your friends and family. Venting can be a therapeutic way to deal with negative emotions from having to postpone or cancel their wedding. Be open and understanding, but not dismissive or overly positive.

3. Contact vendors. A lot goes in to planning a wedding. If your couple has hired a wedding planner, they can help with reaching out to the vendors the couple has chosen. If not, consider the numerous contracts with the florist, photographer, caterer, cake decorator, venue, DJ, furniture rentals, day-of coordinator, and many more that may exist. Depending on the vendor and the wording of each contract, meetings with vendors may involve renegotiating the contract, maintaining it but postponing the date, or asking for a partial refund.
Picture
4. Give them resources. There are many couples in the same boat, and many community and support groups online. The Zola Facebook Community  has almost 12,000 members in the throes of pandemic wedding planning. For more local advice, check out Colorado COVID-19 Wedding Support.

5. Deal with guests. Offer to help contact guests to notify them of changes to the event. This could involve a formal, mailed update, or an email or text if the wedding was scheduled for just a few weeks away. Be sure to introduce yourself to the couple’s family and friends if making calls or sending texts on their behalf. You can also help answer guests’ follow-up questions about reservations they had for the wedding or the timing of the rescheduled event (if there is one).

Picture
DON’T:
1. Give opinions or advice unless it is solicited by the couple. It is complicated and confusing trying to reschedule a large event with many moving parts, never mind with unwarranted opinions thrown into the mix. Give advice only if you are asked to by the couple.

2. Be overly positive or dismissive. Saying, “It’s going to be fine,” may not go over well. Things may not be okay for your friends or family members, and they don’t have to be. Try saying, “I’m sorry. I wish things were different,” or “I can’t imagine what you’re going through, but I’m here for you.”

3. Expect to be able to fix it. As a friend or family member, the best you can do is listen and offer help or advice if it’s requested. Do not try to fix their feelings or the situation.

8 Things to do Immediately After You Get Engaged

7/15/2020

Congratulations, you’re engaged! Now what?

Before you dive head-first into wedding planning, here are some of My Big Day’s to-dos immediately after you get engaged.
Picture

  1. Share the news – When you’re ready, share your big news with family and friends! Start with personal phone calls to those closest to you and texts or emails for groups of distant friends and family, and save the Facebook post for after you’ve notified those deserving of a more personal message.
  2. Have your ring sized and insured – Make sure your new jewelry fits snugly so it won’t slip off; there are also companies that insure jewelry, usually for a yearly fee, in case of loss, theft, or damage.
  3. Do a photo shoot! – It can be a fun couples’ experience to have some engagement photos taken by a professional photographer. Some uses for these photos: framed on your mantle, a Facebook engagement announcement post, cards sent to friends and family telling them of your engagement, invitations for an engagement party, your wedding website, and wedding save-the-dates.
  4. Throw an engagement party – Make it a low-key dinner at home with your nearest and dearest, or go all-out and host a party at a venue (we can help with this!)

Picture
5. Discuss engagement length – Make sure you and your fiancé are on the same page about the length of your engagement and the timing of your wedding. For some people, a few months sounds just right. Others wouldn’t dream of an engagement lasting less than two years. You don’t have to pick a date yet, but make sure you and your future spouse’s priorities and timelines are in harmony.

6. Spend time together, alone – Celebrating your engagement can be great fun, but it can also be an overwhelming time that invites everyone’s opinions and advice – whether you ask for it or not. Take some time as a couple to have some fun dates and relax before throwing yourselves into wedding planning.

7. Brainstorm themes, budget, and guest list – Before you really start planning, have some casual conversations about your future wedding. Will it be an elopement, or a blowout event with 500 guests? Do you want to spend your savings on the wedding of your dreams, or would you rather have a small event and save the money for a honeymoon or down payment?

8. Hire a planner!
 – If we didn’t already help you plan your ideal engagement party, then this is where we come in. We offer packages tailored to large weddings or small weddings, full-service or day-of only, and everything in-between. Learn more about My Big Day’s wedding packages HERE.

COVID-19 Wedded Bliss in Colorado

4/23/2020

The My Big Day wedding business has been hit hard due to COVID-19. With all of the cancellations and changes, we wanted to highlight a couple who is a shining example of how to make lemonade out of the lemons they were handed.

Zach and Samantha not only had their wedding cancel... their venue wouldn't offer a refund, they realistically cannot reschedule until next year, their family couldn't fly to them in Colorado to witness them say their vows to each other... but
they had the right perspective.

Love is what matters most.
Picture
No exquisite venue
No big bridal party
No fancy dinner
No dancing til the wee hours of the morning
No honeymoon suite
No honeymoon
No elaborate photo shoot
No hair & make-up artist
No photo booth
No gift table
No guest book
No bridal party grand entrance
No chicken dance
No limo ride home

What they did have:

Wedding vows
     Wedding rings
          A suite & dress
               Social distancing
                     Masks
                           A few photos
                                  Eternal LOVE
No, their day is not what they had initially pictured, but it was "perfect!"
They got married. They are in love. They have a great story to tell. And they can host a big celebration at a later date.

My Big Day is honored to be part of history in Loveland, CO.

We started our business here.
We offer unique events and services here.
           Some of us live here.
                 Many of us volunteer here.
                        We all LOVE Loveland!
In February of 2019, Visit Loveland (an extension of the City of Loveland) debuted their Love Locks sculpture.
This now iconic piece of Sweetheart City history can be found at the Visitor's Center on 34/Eisenhower just West of I-25.
Picture
Visitors and love birds from all over the world have been locking their love on the largest lock sculpture of it's kind in the US right here in Loveland!
To celebrate our Love for this city, My Big Day purchased a brick from Leadership Loveland so that we can continue to be part of history and support this community.

All of My Big Day's wedding couples receive a lock & key with information on how they can lock their love in Loveland!

The Loveland Visitor's Center sells locks, they also offer a free engraving tool so you can keep your message forever on your lock.

Do I REALLY Need a Wedding Planner? Just One Example of Why the Answers is YES YES YES!

9/16/2019

Picture
This past weekend we were honored to be hired as the planning team for a couple who was getting married in Estes Park. Today the team debriefed about all the wedding details, as we constantly scrutinize our work, and evaluate the other vendors our clients hire and consider whether or not we would recommend them to others.

This wedding was another PERFECT example of why you hire planners. Not only do we manage the details, we jump in and help your other vendors with their work should they fall short, to ensure you are not left stressing over things you shouldn't have to worry about. Everything below actually happened at ONE WEDDING.
Picture
What happened: When reviewing contracts of vendors our couple hired, we noticed they hired a company that another client of ours had a very negative experience with. We gave them honest feedback and suggested they NOT to use a particular employee that we didn't feel would serve them well.

What COULD HAVE happened: This couple could have had the same unfortunate experience another client had if they hadn't hired us and allowed us to review their contracts.

What happened: Our clients were from out of state and purchasing all of their decorations, shipping them to their house, then having to ship them to Colorado didn't make sense.
We offered to rent them what we had that would fit with their theme for a very small fee. We also allowed them to ship their other decorations to us and we transported them to the wedding.

What COULD HAVE happened:
Unnecessary expenses, stress, and more work for the bride and groom.

What happened: The catering staff was short staffed and wasn't able to clear the tables in a timely fashion. My Big Day jumped in and started clearing plates, refilling waters, etc.

What COULD HAVE happened: The Mother of the Bride and Aunt Julie could have been clearing plates, rather than visiting with guests.

What happened: Since the catering team was short staffed, they also didn't have enough hands to cut cake and serve it to guests.  Guess who served all of the guests? Yours truly.

What COULD HAVE happened: The cake would have made it out to tables by the end of the night when half of the guests had already left.

What happened: The DJ clearly didn't have the correct notes for this bride and groom. He made one mistake after another. My Big Day stepped in with our notes and babysat him to make sure he got his playlist in order.

What COULD HAVE happened: Their guests could have been doing the Macarena and Chicken Dance, even though they explicitly put those on the DO NOT PLAY list.

What happened: The DJ was not well spoken on the microphone and botched a few important moments. My Big Day  Event Planners having a wealth of Public Speaking experience, so we politely took over announcements and let him focus on the playlist.

What COULD HAVE happened: Angry family members insulted that they were called by the wrong name, guests missing their shuttle ride back to their hotel, missed speeches... you name it.

When you hire events planners, you are hiring a team of experts who have your best interest at heart, years of experience with every kind of emergency you can imagine, and a team of people who have worked with hundreds of different vendors. We are flexible, reliable, and happy to recommend other great vendors in the industry.

Places in Colorado to POP the Question

8/13/2019

The proposal is a story you will tell for the rest of your life. "How did he do it?" "Where did you do it?" "Did you know it was coming?" "How did you react?"

Where and how you propose or are proposed to can be as important as the Big Day itself.

If you are struggling to find the right location or right time, listen to your gut, and check out a few ideas from us!

Where you met

Maybe you met at a bar, a friend's house, or at a political rally. Go back to the place where it all began and recreate the first time you met.
Picture

Where you had your first date

Maybe your first date was a complete strike out, but you were lucky enough to score a second one. Or perhaps it was the kind of date that inspires corny movies.  If it was memorable, it might be worth reliving.
Picture

By a body of water

There is something so relaxing and romantic about water. A peaceful walk with no one around, ultimate privacy with a sunrise or sunset, and the sound of gentle waves.... Is this your style?
There are great views and private spots all over Colorado!
  • Grand Lake
  • Chatfield Reservoir
  • Horsetooth Reservoir
  • Boulder Reservoir
  • Prospect Lake
  • Boyd Lake
  • Lake Granby
  • Lake Dillon
  • The Big Thompson
  • Lily Lake

Picture

In a snow storm

Just as with a peaceful lake, a snow storm proposal comes with built in romance. Quiet snow, the threat of not being able to leave home for a couple days, hot chocolate, a crackling fire.... what's not to love?
Picture

On a mountain top

Whether you hike, take a gondola, a train, or drive... a mountain top proposal ranks up there with romantic Colorado proposal locations. Just be sure your fiance to be has enough air!
Picture

In Loveland

Loveland, Colorado is the Nation's Sweetheart City after all. And it's right here in Colorado! The trendy downtown bodes many unique places to pop the question. You can visit the Valentine exhibit at the Loveland Museum Gallery, and you can 'Lock Your Love' on the now famous sculpture at the Loveland Visitor's Center.

At an event you will only find in Colorado

Colorado is home to many memorable, unique events. Find one that suits your style, have fun, and make the proposal the cherry on top of your day!
-Tour de Fat
-The NoCo Easter Keg Hunt
-Frozen Dead Guys Day
-Ullr Fest
-The Lantern Fest

An Intimate  French Revelry Wedding on Boyd Lake

7/2/2018

We were so proud to be a part of this celebration of love and commitment between Pat and Tracy in their Boyd Lake home this past Saturday.
My Big Day was asked to help coordinate an intimate wedding for Pat and Tracy who wanted to make sure that their closest friends and family had a taste of Tracy's French family background.  We came up with a 'French Revelry' style day for the couple!
Picture
While the weather didn't fully cooperate, this couple was cool and calm, and kept a focus on what was truly important!
Picture
The colors chosen for the wedding were a white base, with tons of POP! Burgundy, reds, pinks and greens warmed each room. Sprawling vines added an earthy feel.  Lace and Lilies in Fort Collins did an amazing job transforming the home!
Picture
Picture
Picture
To make a French Revelry meal complete, you need a very special menu and multiple courses!  Taste Local in Loveland, CO did an amazing job with the menu selection, presentation, and authentic interpretation!
Picture
Picture
Picture
And what multiple course meal would be complete without a wine pairing?  Our sommelier friend, Paul, hand selected multiple wines to pair with each course. He educated guests on the background of each wine and why it pairs so well!
Picture
Picture
Picture
While we didn't get to celebrate out on the deck - looking out on Boyd Lake, Flexx  Productions did provide rentals perfect for some shade on a sunny deck, all of the tables, chairs, linens, gold flatware and more!
Picture
Of course, we wouldn't get to post such lovely photos without the permission and talent of the lovely Kyla with KJean Photography!  She is always a pleasure to work with and such a professional!

Congratulations to the latest happy My Big Day wedding couple: Patrick & Tracy!
