Interview Questions for Photographers

1/8/2014

Picture
We’ve all seen amazing images of beautiful people with the perfect setting and perfect lighting in a stunning shot.

Pinterest has given us all sorts of ideas for creative photos, but how do you ensure you get the right professional for your BIG day?

We have all the questions and tips for you to weed through the never-ending list of potential photographers and get the professional you deserve.

Potential Wedding Photographer Questions:
1. What is your style of photography? Traditional, Artistic, Natural Light, Photojournalism, Illustrative, etc.
2. How many events have you shot in your career?
3. How did you get into Photography? (They should be able to give you a verbal resume)
4. Have you ever shot at our venue? If they haven’t, ask them to go do a site visit.
5. Do you bring in your own lighting? The answer should be a resounding, Yes! If they do not expect a detailed answer as to why they work without their own lighting.
6. How many events will you shoot on the day of our event?
7. Can I request certain images are taken at the wedding? If yes, ask how they will ensure to capture these images.
8. How many hours are included in your package?
9. How much does an additional hour of coverage cost?
10. Do you bring a second shooter? Depending on the event, a second shooter can be crucial to capture all the important moments.
11. How many images can I expect to see from my event? On average photographers take between 1,200 and 1,500 images at your event but that doesn’t mean you will see all of those! You can plan to see anywhere from 150 to 400 images from your event, depending on its length.
12. Do you have a limit to the amount of images you will edit? The answer to this should be “No”.
13. How long does it take to see the proofs from my wedding?
14. Do I receive a disc of images or do I have to order all prints through you?
15. How much are prints?
16. Is an album included? If so, ask to see a sample of the album.
17. Will you use my images in any advertising?
18. What will you and your second shooter wear?
19. What is your plan if you are ill or there is an emergency and you can’t photograph my wedding?
20. How much is the deposit?
21. When is the balance due?
22. What is your cancellation policy?
23. As with any vendor… PASSION. Does the photographer have it? If you ask them about their favorite part of their job, do their eyes light up? If you ask them to tell you about why they got into the industry, do they have a compelling story they love to tell? If they can’t tell you why they love their job, will they put passion into your Big Day? Probably not.

Cheers!

False Friends; How To Handle The Ones Who Disappoint You

12/28/2013

Picture
My Big Day follows a number of event sites and wedding blogs to keep up on the latest trends. One trend (or common theme) that just isn't going away is friend envy.

If you've ever had a BIG DAY or life event centered around you, perhaps you have experienced this sad phenomenon. It's said that those closest to you can hurt you the most.  We see this time and time again... someone gets engaged, has a baby, gets a work promotion, etc... and all of the sudden ONE of your friends acts out.  They are rude, try to one-up you, ruin a surprise, or just spoil something for you.

Who needs a friend like that?!?  Not you.
The photo below is the best visual I've seen in a while of a friend showing her lack of support for her 3 close girlfriends who all got engaged.  Funny, yes.  But also hurtful.

Picture
So what can YOU do to protect yourself from a friend who turns foul?

Here are some tips:

1) Ask yourself, is it something I've done? Can I make the situation better?
2) Avoid assumptions or misinformation from others. Have a conversation, if you feel comfortable doing so.  Try to fix what might be broken.

If that isn't the answer or doesn't fix things...
Consider where they might be coming from. They may have a reason for being jealous or raining on your parade. Either way, it's not acceptable. Protect yourself.   So...

3) Don't invite them to any upcoming BIG events in your life. They will only disappoint you.
4) Surround yourself with positive, healthy people that will lift you up.
5) Don't be a gossip. Just smile and move on.  Take the high road.  It always feels better.
6)
Restrict that friend on Facebook (and other social media) Block them from seeing your posts, without 'unfriending' them.
7) Read Oprah's article on Friendship Detox  CLICK HERE

8) Realize that people change over time, and whether you changed or they changed, you'd rather have people in your life who are happy for you. If you have to try hard to get along, then something is wrong.

Picture
As an event planner for 16+ years, I've personally seen lots of bridesmaids gone bad, mothers who ruin surprises, family members who can't control themselves or set aside past issues for ONE day of celebrating their loved one/s,  co-workers stealing thunder,  exes showing up unannounced,  the list goes on...
We even experience it as owners of a small business. There will always be people in your life who love and support you, and then there are the rare few who don't like to see you succeed.

When you hire My Big Day Events, you are hiring your own, personal advocate. Our #1 job is to make your BIG DAY the most memorable day of your life, and to help buffer those with friend envy from ruining your moment.

Cheers!

Questions to Ask Your Potential Caterer

12/26/2013

Picture
Hiring a great caterer can help eliminate so much unnecessary event stress. The best team will help with some of the small, yet very important details.

Often when considering a variety of caterers, people base their decision on one of two things: a sample tasting, or the price. Of course, there is so much more to consider outside of those two things.

Ensure you get the best of the best by asking your potential caterer the following questions in your interview process.

Questions:

1. What is your approach to food recommendations and preparation?

2. How many events have you catered?

3. What is the typical size of events you cater?

4. How many events will you be working on the day of our event?

5. Have you ever done an event at this particular location?

6. If having a buffet, do you decorate the buffet stations? If so, will I have input in the decorations?

7. How many wait staff will you bring?

8. Do you carry liquor liability insurance? If so, how much liquor liability do you carry?

9. Do you provide linens, napkins, china, flatware or glassware? If so, can I see a sample? What colors of linens are available? Is this an additional fee?

10. Will I be charged for broken items?

11. What will the wait staff and bartenders wear?

12. How much time do you need for set-up and tear down? Will these times be included in my quote?

13. Will you light the candles on my guest tables?

14. Do you offer any additional services?

15. Will the tax and service fees (gratuity) be included in my quote?

16. How much is the deposit to hold our date?

17. When is the balance due?

18. What is your cancellation policy?

Alternative Bachelorette Party Ideas

11/21/2013

Picture
My Big Day LOVES bachelorettes and loves to party!  Some traditional bachelor and bachelorette party ideas seem tired and a little 'been there, done that.'

Try switching things up a bit and look for fun group activities that a tad un-traditional.

Check out the list below and find a party idea that's right for you and your friends. And if you really need help, contact My Big Day and let us plan the party for you!

  1. Sign up for TravelZoo alerts. Have a couple places in mind that you and the girls would like to travel to. When one of those places pops up on a travel alert, snag it fast! You can book an exotic trip for an amazing deal if you are flexible!
  2. Why not Go Green by camping in a national park? Camping trips in the past have a been a fun bachelor party idea but there’s no reason that the girls can’t enjoy a fun night away in Sedona or Joshua Tree. Not crazy about spending time in a tent? There are plenty of outdoor cabins and luxury campsites available online for your eco-friendly bachelorette party.
  3. Give Back Bachelorette Parties: Service oriented parties are making a comeback. Brides are donating their time to give back to their community for a good cause. Using their time in a positive way is a great way to make an important impact for those less fortunate.
  4. Bucket List bachelorette parties are trending. Check something off your bucket list with all your best gal pals in tow.  Make a list, and agree with the girls to knock one or two off the list before you get hitched!
  5. Kick back and relax at a girl’s bachelorette spa weekend. Take a trip to a local salon or plan a lavish spa retreat get away. Let your cares slip away while you’re covered in a mud wrap and massaged into relaxation. Treat your favorite bridesmaids to manicures and pedicures as a thank you for making your big day memorable.
  6. Not everyone can have Napa in their backyard but if you’re lucky you can have a wine and cheese getaway to a local wine country for a special wine themed bachelorette party. Rent a nice limo bus for a responsible transportation tour to all the scenic tasting spots.
  7. Photo session bachelorette parties are all the rage right now. Boudoir photos are a great wedding day present for your new husband. Or similar to photos you took with all your girlfriends in high school, bachelorettes are treating their best girl friends to girlfriend photos. Scrapbook all your new photos for a fun way to remember and thank your bridesmaids.
  8. Everyone loves a laugh and comedians love playfully teasing bachelorettes. Sitting front row at a comedy club theme bachelorette party is a great way to get your bride-to-be plenty of attention!
  9. Plan a Photo Scavenger Hunt. Make a fun list of things or people to take photos of/with!  The team with the most photos wins. You'll laugh the entire time, and have photos to keep for a lifetime.
  10. Trying to stay healthy and in shape for the big day? Plan a health  themed bachelorette party with a yoga instructor, dance class or Pilates class. These classes are great for non-drinkers or pregnant guests because you can abstain from alcohol and partying.
