Advice from Amateurs & Bad Bridesmaids

6/5/2015

- by Christine Forster, My Big Day

Last night I was so looking forward to a nice, relaxing evening at my nail salon... ahhh.... one hour in a massage chair, getting a pedicure, reading wedding magazines. But that's not how the night played out.

The salon was hopping - nearly every chair was taken. I was sat next to a loud, abrasive brunette and her friend who were having a little bit of a girls night.
The brunette clearly didn't notice the soothing whimsical music in the background and chairs lined with ladies reclined with their eyes closed. Her voice carried across the entire salon. She spoke as if her words of wisdom were meant for everyone there.
Picture
Two minutes in I heard the word 'wedding' and my ears perked up. The brunette's friend was getting married and they were catching up to talk about wedding details.  The conversation was like nothing I have ever heard before - mostly because we meet with bride's and grooms - not all their friends and bridal party.  Never have I heard a bride get so much advice in such a short period of time... so much BAD advice. The experience inspired this post.

Every bride should read this:
Just because your friend got married last year, it does not  make her an expert on YOUR wedding - or weddings in general.

Advice from Amateurs: An amateur is someone who is NOT a professional.  If you are seeking consultation from friends who married before you, they may not be the best people to ask.  Why? Your day is unique to you. You had your own vision for your wedding and an amateur can't necessarily advise you on specifics for your day. They only know the tiny bit they've experienced.
Bad Bridesmaids:  A bad bridesmaid is in it for all the wrong reasons. If you have a bridesmaid who never asks you, "What do YOU want?" or "How do YOU feel about that?".... only give their own opinions or tell you how you should feel - you my friend have a bad bridesmaid.
Picture
For a full hour I sat and listened to opinion after opinion and bad advice after bad advice. The poor bride was exhausted by the brunette, I could tell. Never once did her friend/bridesmaid ask her how she was feeling or what she would like. She just gave advice as if she were a seasoned pro.

Things to leave up to the Pros:

  • Timings (hair, makeup, photos - basically the entire day)
  • Vendor Recommendations (unless your friend has see the vendor in action more than once)
  • Dealing with complicated family dynamics
  • Color Palette (Really, this is up to you, don't listen to what your friends prefer. You have to live with your photos - not them)
  • Photo shots (again- the pros can give you advice, but ultimately it is up to you)
  • Pricing (The Pros see contracts every day. We can estimate pricing for every aspect of an event)

So... did I step in and call the Bad Bridesmaid out?
No.   I could have passed the bride my card and offered to help, but some situations aren't worth jumping in the middle of.  Let's hope the bride comes to her senses and decides to hire a pro!

2015 Wedding Trends in Colorado

1/18/2015

We are seeing some exciting wedding trends for 2015!  My Big Day loves working with brides who have a vision and are willing to try new things. With every wedding season trends change and we can see patterns in popularity.

Here is what we are seeing for 2015:
Destination Weddings to the Colorado Mountains:
Living and having a business based in Colorado, we see 'mountain themed' weddings all the time. But in 2015 we are seeing more destination weddings to the Colorado mountains than ever!  We have brides coming from out of state and getting married in Silverthorne, Breckenridge, Estes park, Vail, Beaver Creek, Granby, and Steamboat Springs.
Why are mountain weddings so popular?
We think it's because a wedding outdoors makes for great photos, Colorado has reliable weather, and Colorado is more affordable than having your friends and family fly to Bora Bora for your destination!

Classic Making a Comeback:
Everything old is new again!  Simple elegance, white, gold accents, distinguished details...  We are seeing the word "Classic" everywhere!  Think lace... pastel pink... fine china ... crystal.... what weddings were, and are again!

Laser-Cut Wedding Invitations:
In 2015 laser cut and laser scribed invitations have definitely become popular.  We are seeing "Classic" make a comeback, and laser cut invitations are a statement piece that can convey a classic theme to your guests. With the array of designs and intricacies available, these invitations set the tone of a wedding!  They are great for Save the Dates too!
We received this laser scribed invitation from bride, Alicia:

"Frozen" Winter Weddings:
Blame it on Disney... weddings are not just for the summer (they never really have been).  But more than ever, winter weddings are gaining in popularity. And why not!?!  Snow makes the perfect background for soft, clean, sparkly elegance!

Wedding Cinematography:
Forget the words "wedding video."  Wedding movies are the new trend!  My Big Day has worked with some incredible videographers who turn weddings into short films. We LOVE this trend!
Below is a wedding film from one of our recent weddings:

Craft Beer Weddings:
Being from Colorado, and having a business in Northern Colorado, "The Napa of Beer"... we find that craft  beer has made it's way into the wedding scene - BIG TIME!
Signature cocktails will always be a fun offering for guests. But local, craft beer and spirits make your Big Day a celebration of you, and where you are from!

Northern Colorado Bridal Shops

1/9/2015

-by Marissa Max

The man of your dreams just proposed!  Congratulations!!  You’ve got the ring you’ve been hoping and praying for and cannot wait to start planning your perfect wedding with your handsome husband-to-be!  One of the first things that we recommend that brides begin their search for is their wedding dress.  If you were anything like me, you’ve been flipping through bridal magazines or perusing Pinterest wedding gown boards for months and want your dress to be, well, absolutely perfect!  To help you in your search for a spectacular wedding gown, we’ve compiled a list of some of the best bridal shops in Northern Colorado!

Picture
Dora Grace Bridal in Fort Collins, CO
Dora Grace Bridal is owned and operated by Timiry, who is originally from Indiana.
Her team of associates are fabulous and try their very best to find each bride a dress that fits their personality and budget.  This local shop carries the latest styles from many different designers including, but not limited to, Maggie Sottero, Mori Lee, Pronovias, La Sposa, Stella York, and W Too.  Not only do they carry a wide selection of wedding gowns, but they also have bridesmaid dresses, tuxedos, and prom wear!  You are able to browse and choose some of your favorite gowns to try on, including a sale section of the store where you can find great dresses at fabulous discounts!  It has the feel of a very high-end dress boutique, while still offering a wide range of prices to fit many budgets.

Picture
Encore Bridal in Fort Collins, CO
This bridal shop is one of Fort Collins’ oldest independent bridal shops, which obviously means that they know how to do good business and offer brides what they want and need!
Located in a fabulous older building off of College Avenue near the Colorado State University campus, Encore Bridal is a great place to start if you are looking for a smaller-shop feel.  Each room in the shop is divided by price so that you can browse dresses within your price point.  They even have a room devoted consignment dresses!  You pick four or five dresses to start with by placing a clip on the dresses you like, and then get to model them for your friends and family.  The dress selection is not quite as large as some of the other shops, but they do feature quite a few popular designers including Allure Bridals, Allure Romance, Saison Blanche, Eden Bridals and Ellis Bridal.  Like many of the other shops, they also offer tuxedo rental, bridesmaids’ dresses, Mom’s dresses, and more which makes it a great one-stop shop!

Picture
Blushing Bride in Windsor, CO
Blushing Bride has been locally owned and operated since the late 1980’s, making it one of the oldest bridal shops on the list.
Today, they carry a wide variety of dresses from designer and off-the-rack wedding gowns to plus size gowns.  They also have a good selection of bridesmaids’ dresses, flower girl and first communion dresses, prom and eveningwear gowns, and accessories.  As far as wedding gowns are concerned, they have a limited choice of designers, but some of the most popular ones, which include Allure Bridals, Alfred Angelo, and Maggie Sottero.  Many of the most popular wedding gowns come from these designers, though, so don’t let the limited list of names fool you!  Another plus is that this shop does not require you to make an appointment to try on gowns, however we do recommend calling ahead in order to avoid a line at the fitting rooms!  This popular local shop is another great stop in your journey to find your dream wedding gown.

Picture
Wed Wisely at the Loveland Wedding Center in Loveland, CO
One of the fantastic things about this dress shop is the fact that every year, the owner Dianne Carpenter gives away wedding gowns to those who need them.
Many of these gowns were either floor models or donated gowns and when asked why she does this, she said it is because she wants to bless others.  The wedding gowns could sell for $500 and up when they were brand new, but Carpenter wants to use her shop to help others and does exactly that once a year.  When the sale is not going on, she has a wonderful selection of new, donated, and vintage dresses to choose from.  Not only does she sell wedding gowns, but she also has a selection of bridesmaids’ dresses, flower girl dresses, Mom’s dresses and also does alterations!  It is a wonderful place to start, especially if you live in the Loveland area!

Picture
The Bridal Connection in Longmont, CO
For over 25 years now, the Bridal Connection has been serving brides in Colorado.
According to their website, they carry nearly 200 sample bridal gowns from a variety of designers, which means that you have lots of dress options to choose from.  Like the other shops mentioned above, they also have bridesmaid, flower girl, and mom dresses, as well as tuxedos.  Some of their designers include Maggie Sottero, Mori Lee, Venus, Allure Bridals Romance by Allure, Stella York, and Essence of Australia.  Because they have a wide selection of dresses, it makes it fairly easy to try on a variety of styles, especially if you are not sure what might look best on you.  This shop also recommends that you start your dress search early as it takes about 6 to 12 months for their dresses to arrive in store and then you must factor in the alterations.  They are open Monday through Saturday, so make sure to make an appointment before you go!

Picture
At My Big Day Events, we recommend that you begin to schedule your appointments and search for a gown as soon as you can!  It often takes at least a couple of months to order the dress into the store and another couple of months to do any alterations, so get started on this process right away, especially if you have a hard time deciding upon which style of wedding gown you may want to wear.  Good luck and happy planning!

Wedding Songs For That Special Dance

11/18/2014

Picture
-by Jessica Weimer

For some, picking their wedding first dance songs is not the most important part of their wedding or the most anticipated, while for some it is something they have thought of for years!   There are many songs out there that can be used for these dances and whether it is a personal choice based on your favorite song as a couple or a song that you heard on the radio that just fit, this is an important part of any wedding.   Guests like to watch you dance with your new wife or husband as well as the special dance with your parents so this is a song that should be picked with some thought and consideration.   With there being so many different songs out there this may seem a daunting task, but when you narrow it down to genre or era this becomes much simpler.
Check out My Big Day’s favorite first dance songs!
First dance as a couple:
If you are looking for something classic, our favorite is Etta James’s ‘At Last’. This song is recognized almost everywhere and is a classic for a reason, IT IS BEAUTIFUL.
If you want something more modern, John Legends ‘All of Me’ is the perfect romantic ballad. We also love ‘Thinking out Loud’ by Ed Sheeran it’s incredibly cute. If you are the couple who wants to stand out and do something quirky, ‘Sweet Pea’ by Amos Lee is a really cute song and its upbeat so it gives you more options if you want to do a faster dance or a slow dance.

First dance with dad:
While the dance with your new husband can be chosen to reflect you as a couple, this dance can reflect your relationship with your dad, and the lyrics in a song can voice it for you. A lot of country songs embody this relationship, such as, Tim McGraw’s ‘My Little Girl’ or Rascal Flatts ‘My Wish’. If you aren’t a real fan of country music, some other options are ‘Daughters’ by John Mayer, this one we don’t hear as often though it is a sweet song. Also a nice classic is Frank Sinatra’s ‘The Way You Look Tonight’.
Mother and son dance:
The mother and son dance is often times one of my favorite dances, there is something so sweet about the relationship between the two. A great song that tends to be on the emotional side is ‘I Hope You Dance’ by Lee Ann Womack, I love this song because it is sung by a woman and really feels like it is coming from your mom. Another great one is ‘Don’t Blink’ by Kenney Chesney, this one is a good song to look back on your life and the future ahead. If you want something a little different ‘Song for Mama’ from Boyz to Men would be perfect and old school.

Whichever song you pick, whether it is from this list or something completely different that you remember from a long time ago being significant, as long as you both love it and it represents your relationship it will be perfect!

Why You Should Say YES To Boudoir Photos

11/8/2014

-by Jessica Weimer

Boudoir photo shoots have become more and more popular with brides in the last couple years. The idea of boudoir is to take sexy pictures in pretty lingerie and give it to your man on the wedding day so he can anticipate the night to come. Some brides don’t understand this tradition or don’t understand the need for it; we are here to tell you it is something you definitely don’t want to miss out on, not just for your future husband, who will definitely appreciate the thought, but for yourself!

Here are our top 3 reasons you should say YES to a boudoir shoot:

Picture
1.  It’s fun! When chatting with a newly married friend of mine, I asked her her experience with boudoir. She told me at first she was not into it; she couldn’t understand how she wouldn’t feel weird being half naked and having someone take her picture. But then she told me how the photographer started off by asking what her favorite features were and what her fiancé loved most about her body, she would then position her in poses that accentuated these qualities. This made her feel more confident about how the pictures would turn out. The photographer would then tell her she looked great or that pose was really sexy and it made her feel empowered! Having these pictures taken isn’t just for your fiancé to enjoy it is also a great way for you to enjoy yourself and boost your self-esteem by realizing you are beautiful!
Picture
2.  You get to wear really fun underwear. One of the best parts of boudoir is going and buying the sexy lingerie. This is a fun girl trip and gives you the chance to get something really beautiful and fun that your fiancé will go crazy for! If you really wanted to get creative you can incorporate your fiancés button up shirt or use props like pearls and fans, this creates a totally new and fun look.
Picture
3.  You don’t have to be naked. Some woman can think boudoir is borderline porn, just naked pictures, but boudoir doesn’t have to be like that! If you get a good photographer who has a good eye, your pictures can be very artistic and play with shadows and angles just right, that it is suggestive more than full frontal. These pictures can sometimes turn out more sexy and alluring because they are just a hint of something more.
We think choosing to do boudoir isn’t just for your fiancé, but for yourself and learning to love your body the way it is.  Wedding planning can be stressful and this is a great way to get away from the details and focus on doing something special for your future husband. Once you try it you won’t regret the way it made you feel or the fun time you had!

Beauty Trends for Brides

10/28/2014

-by Jessica Weimer

When thinking about your wedding day, most brides picture it to be the day they are most beautiful. Your hair and makeup needs to be perfect and everything you’ve ever dreamed of. Now-a-days there are so many different options to choose from that it can seem like an endless possibility of choices! Here is some examples of My Big Day’s favorite wedding day looks!

Picture
Picture
CLASSIC
We love this look because it is perfect for the girl who doesn’t want a lot of eye makeup but also wants to make a statement. Red lips are beautiful on brides! The key to this look is the winged eyeliner and soft grey or brown shadowing on the eye. This is a great look for a bride wanting a vintage flair, as it is reminiscent of the 20’s.

SMOKEY EYE
This look is definitely more of a sultry look and really emphasizes the eyes. This look is ideal with a nude or simpler lip, you don’t want too much going on with such a dark eye it would be overwhelming. This makeup is perfect if you are looking to be a glam bride!

Picture

Picture
The NO MAKE-UP LOOK
If you are the bride who wants something all natural and doesn’t want to fuss with too much on your face, these looks could be perfect for you. We recommend at least a touch of foundation to make your skin look flawless in pictures and maybe a little blush to bring some color in. A little eye pencil around your eyes will make your eyes pop without looking overdone as well as a little mascara. We picture this on the boho bride or the mountain bride.

UNIQUE BRIDAL LOOKS
If none of these ideas work for you, then maybe you’re the bride who wants to try something a little different and unusual on her wedding day. You should try an eye shadow color that isn’t super trendy or a lip color that is really dark and stands out. Or if you are going with a theme you can do your makeup to match!  Be Uniquely You!

Northern Colorado Florists

10/6/2014

Picture

by Marissa Max

Who doesn’t love the sweet smell of flowers when you walk into a florist’s shop?

While picking a florist may not be the first thing on your list of “to-do’s” after you get engaged, we definitely recommend shopping around for one after you have picked a venue and a wedding date!  Once you know your venue, you will know what you might need in the way of centerpieces or extra floral arrangements and can describe the style of the venue to the florist so that he or she can help you pick flowers that will suit your style!

My Big Day has compiled a list of some of the most popular florists in Northern Colorado.  While there are a ton of wonderful florists in the area, we’ve chosen to highlight a handful of unique ones below.  Happy planning!

Lace and  Lilies in Fort Collins, CO

Locally owned and operated, Lace & Lilies has quickly grown in the Fort Collins area and is now a very common name among brides all over Colorado.
Lacey and Lisa, the owners of this shop, are super sweet and wonderful to work with!  They love meeting with their couples and do a wonderful job of capturing exactly what the bride and groom have in mind style-wise.  Lace and Lilies has been featured in numerous online and print magazines including Dainty Obsessions, My Wedding Magazine, Unique Bride, and more.  Their unique style is very popular among brides!

Best Day Floral Design in Johnstown, CO

Sharon with Best Day Floral Design has been serving the Northern Colorado area for 18 years now and has designed for more than 1000 weddings and receptions!

Whether she is designing the perfect bouquet for a bride or a stunning spray for a ceremony gazebo, Best Day Floral makes sure that the bride’s vision is captured in her floral work.  The prices at this shop are also quite reasonable and she is great at working within a couple’s budget.  She is definitely someone that you want to check out!

Florals by Rhonda in Loveland, CO

Rhonda, owner of this local florist shop, loves serving the Northern Colorado area and creates many unique and beautiful floral arrangements and wedding bouquets/boutonnieres for brides all around the area.  Since Florals by Rhonda is an independent florist, she works very closely with the couple in order to create their perfect floral pieces.  Her motto is “Your Moment.  Your Style” meaning that she strives to create a unique floral bouquet for you rather than having you choose from a catalogue of selections.  Rhonda is also great at working to make your flowers reflect your style while still respecting your budget.

Paul Wood Florist in Fort Collins, CO

Located in Old Town Fort Collins, Paul Wood Florist has been in business for decades now.  They have had over 2,000 custom weddings in the Northern Colorado area and offer delivery, setup, and many rental items for your wedding day.

Paul Wood has a wide selection of colors and flower varieties to choose from, which gives you a lot of flexibility when choosing what you want your bouquet, boutonnieres, and centerpieces to look like.  They also do their best to work within any type of budget, which makes it nice for the couple.
Nature's Grace Design in Fort Collins, CO

Nature’s Grace has designed beautiful arrangements for weddings across Northern Colorado.  They strive to keep up-to-date on the latest styles and trends in the floral community so that they can bring those ideas to you.

They are very creative with their floral arrangements and centerpieces, which makes the arrangements very unique.  They have been featured fairly recently in Style Me Pretty magazine and have participated in a couple of stylized photo shoots as well.
